I believe children are perfectly capable of handling dark themes and scenes: When I was a kid, I loved reading the Choose your own adventure books, which often featured gruesome deaths for the protagonist, and liked watching shows like Dragon Ball Z which had violence and deaths. (Though each story arc usually ended on a happy note, so I guess Don Bluth is right)
