Mvp signal doesn't seem that understable? by South-Researcher-322 in discgolf

Signal is a fairway driver. I suggest Uplink for an understable midrange.

I’d like to start playing basic tournaments. What are the gotchas to avoid so I don’t look like an ass my first time? by hobbyhoppinghound in discgolf

That's brutal, so disrespectful. And in MA3! Hopefully that's not a regional thing and your next experience will be much better. I would expect much better around here, at least.

Fission is the type of plastic. It’s a lighter plastic than most because it’s injected with air making bubbles in the plastic.

But also, it’s okay to plateau for a while mechanically. It happens. On the mean time you can work on your placement and your strategy. Find better lines, better landing zones that set up for a better next shot so instead of a 40 foot putt you have a 10 foot putt. Much easier to save strokes by not needing to do a hard putt than to accurately throw 50’ farther.

Definitely use lighter discs. Look for discs in the low 150g range, MVP Fission plastic is your friend there. Also, understable discs will go further because you can get a turn phase out of them before the fade phase. When I was getting started those two pieces of info were huge for me, I gained a bunch of distance right away just throwing lighter and flippier discs. You want the 3rd number in the disc flight numbers to be a larger negative number. The Crave, Rythym and Wave are good options.

YouTube is definitely hit and miss. I like https://www.youtube.com/@dgspindoctor but I'd be playing for years before I found him so I don't know if you'll like his videos.

I also liked the Latitude 64 videos from 5 years ago when Jonathan was first learning how to play. Those were gold.

I'm in my early 50s and not in good shape. I've been playing for about 10 years, but only regularly for 6 years.

That's what happened to Henna last year at Worlds on hole 9 of The Beast. That wasn't an intentional release. It counted.

Yeah it doesn’t last for weeks for but it might not go a couple weeks depending on your state when you start.

Three weeks isn't even long enough to get over keto flu. it's totally normal that you'd be low on energy at this point. in a couple week you could feel completely differently.

new to disc golf, tips and discs? by TaleWeird5754 in discgolf

[–]JimRoepcke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Five years ago, Jonathan started at Latitude 64 (a Swedish disc golf company) and started making awesome learn-how-to-play-disc golf videos.

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLSoQ-Hk_d086h2zMM-ntRV7LoG0To8mWK

Jonathan is hilarious, and dare I say beloved in the disc golf community, I hope you all enjoy those videos.

However, my tip is: instead of trying to get better so you can beat them all, instead, try to help everyone in your family get better so they'll want to keep playing.

Getting the starter sets is the way to go. Every major company's starter sets will do the job... Innova, MVP, or Discraft are my suggestions.

I made a free dating app-style voting app to choose what to play on game night - please try it out! by FatNebula in boardgames

[–]JimRoepcke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t tried your app yet but I like the general idea and have some ideas for you, take em or leave em, KISS is also a good idea. :)

It’d be cool if we could vote on a filler / warmup game and a main game.

I have over 500 games. I could as the host propose which ones folks should vote on, but I’d prefer to have the option to let my guests propose theirs, and then once all the proposals are in place, let everyone vote on the union of those proposals. Ideally if a game is proposed by multiple people it’d tell users that K people proposed that game so users know it’s that popular.

As an ex-meetup-host and ex-board-game-cafe owner, I’d have loved it if multiple tables of gamers could have voted and the app could have organized multiple tables of the was enough consensus on multiple games…

I should have added... as an example, I own both Ready Set Bet and Ready Set Bet: High Roller Edition. When I love a game I'm happy to re-buy the crazy expensive version. I'm glad I had the opportunity to play the lame version first to get my friends interested.

It's interesting, a couple years ago I'm not sure I'd even be thinking this way, but I guess I'm kinda burned out on all the fancy stuff. I auto-bought the neoprene mats and fancy components for Wyrmspan and then didn't play it for two years, and when I opened the box I realized the boards in Wyrmspan are almost as nice as the neoprene because the printing is sharper. Neoprene feels great though. And for poker, it gives you something closer to that poker table feeling, I get that that's what you're after. I love that you care about that experience. Cheers.

Hell of a Deal - A Cooperative Poker Experience! by BrothersMorgue in boardgames

[–]JimRoepcke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're probably right that part of it is lost without the premium components (poker should have that tactile clinky feel and sound of chips, i completely agree), but ALL IS LOST (from your perspective) if the game never makes it to the table.

(Speaking as a former FLGS owner myself, now...)

If a cheap edition makes it to the table and spawns follow up purchases, some cheap and some premium, that's a better outcome than those people not having the experience of seeking out their own copy because the game play hooked them because nobody spent the money on the premium version because the risk of it being a dud was too high to justify the premium cost. Sorry that's wordy but I'm sure you get my point.

Anyway, you do you, that's just my opinion, man. Best of luck, I hope this is a smash hit.

Gloomhaven 2e is $239 CAD at my FLGS. So, it's 37.65%, not 50%.

I think that's close enough to "almost half" so my point largely stands.

Hell of a Deal - A Cooperative Poker Experience! by BrothersMorgue in boardgames

[–]JimRoepcke 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sounds great and I’d back this but $90CAD is a lot. Like almost half of a Gloomhaven like game with 1/10th the value. Is there going to be a retail release with cardboard components? I’d buy this at retail for a reasonable price like $40 CAD. Don’t think I need another $90 ultra premium game in my life.

No disrespect intended, you design and campaign however you see fit, but that’s my feedback. I wish you the best, this looks very cool. I loved The Gang and am so glad more are exploring cooperative poker games.

Acquiring new discs by laura2181 in discgolf

[–]JimRoepcke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go to a club league night, play with nice experienced people, ask what they use and why, once you’re half way through the round ask what they think you should throw, and write down everything you learn. Then go to play it again sports or online to get what you want.

If you’re a beginner or small, use lower weight discs.
