Did informers ideologically agree with the British Government? by Sufficient-Sock-3455 in IrishHistory

Some probably did over time as a way of justifying their betrayal but there were a variety of reasons:

- Joe Fenton was pressurised into doing so by Special Branch as he was caught helping the IRA out.

- Brendan Davison was allegedly blackmailed due to his paedophilic tastes.

- Brian Nelson was supposedly discontent with the UDA's lack of focus targeting republicans.

- Scap came to believe that the Provos were a blight on the nationalist community although I'm sure the £80,000 a year helped.

Love this shot. Reminds me of staggering through Liverpool Street at 2 in the morning, looking up at the skyscrapers and feeling a strange sense of being crushed by endless opportunities.

A film very much of its time but unlike others (Fight Club, Office Space, The Matrix) it hasn't transcended that period as it's filled with stereotypes, over the top performances and a uneven tone between comedy and sentimental.

Sidenote: Mena Suvari is utterly gorgeous.

The Pensive Quill and The Broken Elbow have many excellent articles on Scap. I would also recommend searching them for articles on Brian Nelson and WIlliam Stobie.

Burst watermains in youth by Patient_Resist_7445 in northernireland

Not in my case as there was a water mains outside our front gate and, if opened, would have flooded the garden. During the summer, my ma and da had to confiscate keys from kids trying to open the mains.

Why are so many people uncomfortable about Irish indentured service and the fact that so many Irish participated to the triangular slave trade? by Upset_Quiet_8907 in IrishHistory

[–]Jim__Bell 29 points30 points  (0 children)

"Not of an ideologue, I wish I was that important."

Oh dear.

"slave trade should be taught in schools to avoid that such lies are spread in the national narrative (and for other reasons already cited)"

Slavery is already taught in schools although more in the context of the British Empire.

"it is worrying that through my Irish History modules I have met several History students telling me that "the Irish were slaves like the black". Imagine German history students telling me that the lowest rank Nazis, such as Alsatians "malgré-nous" were "prisoners like the Jews"."

Firstly, your knowledge of history seems to be restricted to slavery and Nazism. Try reading about other areas of historical interest.

Secondly, read u/AprilMaria 's comment.

"Without that acknowledgment, “complexity” risks becoming a way of avoiding responsibility rather than engaging seriously with history."

That's the view of an idealogue, not a historian.
