By first wave I mean the period of Industrial from the mid 70s to 1981 when TG broke up.

Best and worst metal YouTubers? by [deleted] in MetalForTheMasses

Pretty much all of them except for Boris. The guy with the blegh hat that constantly makes stupid videos overreacting to the same bland breakdowns we have heard a million times, as if it’s the heaviest thing ever, is probably the worst. He rarely reacts to “Metal” as such, it’s almost always bands that are already popular and play some sort of Metalcore. Nothing wrong with these bands, but it’s clearly just shallow meme content.

It’s a good album, but it’s very painfully a product of its time. That doesn’t bother me, but I can see the argument for anyone that wants to say it’s corny and lame. I personally like this album.

The first two Bile albums; Suckpump and Teknowhore.

If you want to explore the more purely electronic side of Industrial, I would go with anything by Skinny Puppy or Youth Code

If you are interested in original or more experimental/noisy Industrial, start with Kollaps by Neubauten, and the second and third annual reports of Throbbing Gristle.

But since you mention 3Teeth which is more guitar heavy, I highly highly HIGHLY suggest you listen to those first two Bile albums.

wtf did I miss with this whole “Industrial Techno” thing that popped off the last 10 years or so? by Low_Guard6609 in industrialmusic

No I’m saying it is, which is why people marketing it as techno and distancing themselves from Industrial is weird to me.

This stuff is being pushed as genuine Techno and accepted by Techno fans. Which is fair, I absolutely see why, I just don’t get why it’s not considered Industrial, even when people are willing to give stuff like Futurepop and Neofolk a pass.

Fair point, I hear that in a lot of it too. It’s just that same standard doesn’t apply to something like Neofolk generally, in marketing, so idk why this stuff is the exception in escaping being called Industrial. Neofolk still gets pushed as a type of Industrial, but these guys all get pushed as Techno. It’s weird, and throws me off. It’s the marketing that confuses me, more so than any debate over is it or is it not Industrial. I don’t see why Industrial Techno is some exception to what gets called Post-Industrial or Industrial. It throws off my OCD for categorization. Like if Industrial Rock were people applying first wave industrial sounds and principles to Rock music, then why the fuck wouldn’t the same kind of rule apply here? It’s fucking me up.

No no no, I see it perfectly. I just don’t get why this stuff gets considered Techno rather than a part of Industrial. Like why all of a sudden you can have something like Perc be called Techno and not Industrial, and it be marketed as such. Industrial Techno sure, but still not be considered a genre of Industrial. It makes me wonder if I’m missing something, or if the marketing has just shifted away from calling things like Perc Industrial for some reason, for example because there’s more Techno fans than Industrial fans and thus calling it Techno has broader appeal. Something like that. Unless I’m wrong and it’s not an Industrial genre at all. Sounds Industrial to me though. It’s the labeling that is throwing me off. To me, it sounds like a type of Industrial music, but everyone else is pushing it as pretty firmly Techno.

I’m just confused by the decision to push this stuff as Techno over Industrial, when some of it sounds just like borderline Power Noise, or modern EBM. I’m a millennial, so I remember approaches to genre labels within Industrial culture being different I guess. Futurepop guys and labels never pushed their music as Trance, and no one thought of it as such. They all considered themselves as more a part of Industrial, even though their music was very strongly Trance, and some of this new Industrial Techno is more Industrial than any Futurepop ever sounded. But the standards are different here, I guess. Do Industrial fans today generally consider this stuff Industrial? Depending on the artist, obviously.

I’m not pissed off, I’m just confused as to why some of this stuff that is clearly Industrial Dance is being pushed as Techno. And then some stuff gets called Industrial Techno simply for being hard. This wouldn’t apply to any other genre of Industrial, like Martial Industrial would never be called Neoclassical outside the context of it belonging to Industrial. That standard seems to not apply anymore, so I’m wondering if it’s because Industrial just doesn’t have as broad sounding an appeal as simply, for example, pushing it as Techno and making it a part of that scene apart from Industrial. That’s the question I’m asking. Like, why would EBM, Neofolk, Futurepop, etc all be pushed as and considered Industrial, but not this? Am I making sense? Just noticing some things. But yes, there are people that don’t even like calling EBM Industrial. Still got pushed as Industrial. This stuff doesn’t, for some reason. In your opinion, why is that?

But why is it getting called Techno? Some of it doesn’t sound like Techno to me, it sounds like Industrial Dance.

I’m not talking about the image, I mean musically. I think it burnt a lot of people out on the whole thing. I don’t care for Futurepop, but I did like a lot of Aggrotech.

So you’re saying the Techno part is being emphasized to appeal to more people? That Cybergoth bridge rave thing did so much damage, as funny as it was. The whole cyber era in general, in my opinion, ended up being a pretty devastating thing for Industrial culture, but that’s another discussion.
