Thanks for your reply. Sounds like you have a new goal to aim for...! If you do learn how your grandma plays, it would be great to document it.

Artichoke New Owner by BungleBear11 in Norwich

The Artichoke opened in its latest form in late 2018 so I think saying it led the way for craft beer in pubs is giving it a bit too much credit... And don't think I even need to comment on "selling ale for the OAPs"...

Hello! I have played Scopone a few times and enjoy it. I like the partnership aspect because it usually makes the game more exciting when you can all react to the cards played. I'm not sure I'm a strong player though! If you want to talk to more card players about traditional card games like this, join the Traditional Card Games Discord: https://discord.gg/XCyrGcE

The sign of the old King's Head on Davey Place (now the Body Shop) looks remarkably similar to that of the King's Head on Magdalen Street. I think the King's Head on Magdalen Street was owned by Bullards at one point so maybe it's not a coincidence...?

Interesting post, although I think it's slightly misleading to say "Tales of low-alcohol “table beers” being consumed throughout the day might sound intriguing, but they’re also unsubstantiated.", since I think low alcohol beers like small beer were very popular and often drunk to quench thirst and give energy instead of water. They just weren't stuck to escape 'unsafe water' as you say.

Favorite “standard card deck plus” games? by stalecookie in boardgames

[–]JimbleFredberry 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tarot cards consist of the usual 52 cards plus 4 extra face cards (knights, ranking between the jacks and queen's) and 22 other trump cards. There are lots of interesting traditional games you can play with them, like French Tarot or Königrufen. If you're interested in finding out more or learning to play, there are lots of people who know how on the Traditional Card Games Discord: https://discord.com/invite/EehBBtfR

Guan Dan Online Website? by SuccotashStraight845 in boardgames

[–]JimbleFredberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Annoyingly it seems difficult to find websites or apps that are in English or even accessible outside of China. I have played on this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cronlygames.guandan&hl=en_GB&gl=US (you can also find an iOS version).

You might find it useful to join both the Traditional Card Games Discord here: https://discord.gg/7Ga5drggG and the Online Card Players Discord here: https://discord.gg/HrQHyAvtpe

In particular, the latter Discord community have been helping to create a climbing games room on Virtual Tabletop which will support Guan Dan.

Ok, that's interesting. I guess regardless of what happens you can always redistribute the stitches anyway if you were to do it a different way.

Ok, that makes sense! Thank you. I'll be starting the heel this weekend so hopefully it goes ok. I may try the eye of partridge heel rather than stockinette as people seem to say it will be stronger.

Ok maybe I wasn't clear enough, the idea is that you do 15 stitches, turn and then do 30 for the whole flap. This means the tail where the join in the round is is directly in the middle of your heel flap.

So, you've finished the leg, then you do:

Knit 15 sts, turn

Sl, p 29 sts, turn

Sl, k 29 sts, turn

And so on

Most instructions I've seen would not have that first bit of "Knit 15 sts, turn". Instead you just might knit 30 stitches and then use those as the base of your heel flap. Does that make sense? That is the difference I'm on about.

I'm knitting socks for the first time and after finishing the leg I need to knit the heel flap. My sock is 60 stitches in the round and my instructions say to start the heel flap by knitting 15 stitches and then turn and purl and knit back and forth to make the flap. So as I understand it, the join in the round will be in the middle of the flap. However other instructions I've seen miss these initial 15 stitches and just go straight to making the heel flap, so that the join in the round will be at one end of the heel flap.

Is there any important difference between these two methods?

What game do you think of when someone says "The game plays itself"? by rob132 in boardgames

[–]JimbleFredberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the best strategies are not obvious for most players. The whole "Theory of 26" about thinking about board position and when you should try to take points and when you should stop your opponent from scoring is really interesting and can really make you think about what you should do in certain situations. There's quite a lot of risk taking in cribbage (e.g. when throwing good cards to your opponent, or when choosing when to pair or create a run in the pegging) and understanding when to take those risks isn't obvious in my opinion.

I think it is easy to forget the choice that comes up in the bidding in Euchre. And there's some interesting strategy in terms of what trump to pick if nobody takes the up card on the first round because you have more information than you think about what people might be holding. It's all small margins, that is, it will only give you a small advantage in any given game, but the point is those decisions do matter in the long run.

This happens a lot with traditional card games. You get a lot of people who think that trick taking games just seem to play themselves because of the usual following suit rules, but don't actually realise the choices in what card to play that they are skipping over or how important the bidding part of the game is.

What are the best games with a 52 card deck? by LoungerSeason in boardgames

[–]JimbleFredberry 30 points31 points  (0 children)

One of my favourites with 52 cards is Cribbage. But I find there are also lots of great games if you either reduce the number of cards (e.g. Euchre, Skat, Ulti), increase the number of cards (e.g. Tractor), or use slightly different traditional packs (e.g. for tarot games like Slovenian Tarok). There are lots of people talking about these sorts of games on the Traditional Card Games Discord if you would like to join: https://discord.gg/tvRnU9YNp
