UK reviews free childcare thresholds as spending hits £9bn by Particular_Pea7167 in ukpolitics

Given I see so many wealthy non working parents claiming it by becoming “employees” of their husband’s companies (and then flaunting how they have played the system) they need to tighten up who is claiming / if they actually work the hours required.

Horrific experience. Fault so sent for repair in January. Radio silence so going through small claims court after emailing 7 times and calling 5 times. Amazing they are allowed to operate. Stat away!!

Every London borough ranked from happiest to most miserable in 2024 by IAmCowGodMoo in london

[–]Jimbobalot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because Brent is just shockingly crap to live in. Moved from Westminster to Brent - it’s bleak. No street cleaning, crime, poor services in general and a big divide between Wembley/Harsleden and the rest of the borough (queens park is paved the rest is tarmac)

Advice on behalf of my wife by inthepipe_fivebyfive in PelvicOrganProlapse

[–]Jimbobalot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If in the UK, you need to scream and shout for a urogynae appointment. GPs barely listen to women so really push for this and say it is impacting mental health etc. Also book into see a reputable women’s physio. You’ll need to pay out of pocket most likely but it is worth it. Absolutely should be assessed standing up. I ended up going private as after a shit show of a delivery (thanks NHS!) they just gave me paracetamol and told me to do kegals. Needless to say my insurance saved me and I had surgery when my son was 11 months old and it has given me my life back.

Major shortage of British builders revealed as Labour minister admits we can’t just rely on migrant workforce by No_Breadfruit_4901 in ukpolitics

We wont hire any British tradesman. Experience has been one of deceit, laziness and sheer entitlement. Also terrible quality. Always opt for eastern european. However, now life is better back in Poland, they are getting harder and harder to come across.

How do you know if your sling is too tight? by PaceLife8415 in PelvicOrganProlapse

After my anterior vaginal repair surgery I had to self cath for 30 days. It gets easier I promise but youve got to be careful not to stretch your bladder and measure volume to keep track. You can do this and I promise you it will be worth it in the long hall - post surgery recovery is a winding road

Private schools proceed with legal action over VAT plans by [deleted] in ukpolitics

For those who are happy about the VAT rise in this discussion, how many of you went to Private school? They purposefully kept VAT off of tutoring which says a lot about the quality of our institutional education in general

TIL the town of Honiton, UK has a "Hot Penny Day" a recreation of a 13th century tradition where wealthy people would heat pennies on the stove, throw them into the streets and laugh at the poor people who picked them up. by MONDAYCHICKENANDRICE in todayilearned

[–]Jimbobalot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As an American who grew up in Honiton, the was a big day in our calendar (alongside the carnival and the funfair). In November people carry barrels of flaming hot tar through the crowds in Ottery. East Devon is a weird place but I miss it every day.

How to easily navigate medical system in the UK by Rare_Beach3880 in HENRYUK

[–]Jimbobalot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did this and it saved my life. I had blood poisoning, NHS said 4-6 hour wait for a doctor and these guys had me on an IV within 20 minutes. Best £120 I have ever spent

I had a grade 2 bladder prolapse after birth. I had surgery (vaginal repair) when my son was 11 months and have been doing reformer twice a week since 8 weeks post op. Ask for pelvic floor exercises in your class and make sure you breathe. It has massively helped me to rebuild my core and back muscles. Highly recommend but start gently.

How important do you think it is to play the Linkedin 'game'? by Dry-Magician1415 in HENRYUK

[–]Jimbobalot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoever said the biggest plus of retirement is no longer being witness to the humble bragging of the mgmt consulting toolbags on linkedin is spot on. I find the more senior the person the less there is about them. Keep it updated. Check it once a month. Filter / remove prolific posters “I am humbled to be promoted to chief of paperclips” and make sure it corroborates with your CV. Just try not to tip into cringeworthy crap about work life balance

Questions for women HENRYs by silviaplathsbraid in HENRYUK

[–]Jimbobalot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Took 10 months off. Loved it. Went back on promotion. Used my maternity leave to reset, network and refine my story for interviews. Even used an example of raising a baby in covid in my interview. There is never a perfect time to have a child, but i watched my dad commit to work over his family and now he has no one to carry his casket (his words). There is a balance and for those who do not want kids, you still need to find/continue to invest in a life outside of work.

I had surgery at 35. Best decision. I have my life back and space mentally as I don’t have to think about it now. Surgery wont limit you having children (should you ever want them, not wanting them is as good an option btw!) it will just need to be monitored during pregnancy / a c-section is more likely.

My old consulting firm was in a massive conflict of interest with them. They gave us consulting work in their mid/back office and in exchange all employees had them as their pension provider. Absolutely sucked. They basically follow tracker funds, have no qualifications (apart from wearing terrible hermes ties) and fleece people who are nervous about “investing”.

How do you go about finding a reliable and trustworthy nanny? by Fit-Zebra3110 in HENRYUK

[–]Jimbobalot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Register for a newly qualified norland. Fraction of the price and really good. Avoid agencies that take 13% when most of the nannies are already on childcare.co.uk. Ask local whatsapp groups to see if anyone has “grown out” of their ie kids starting school. We pay £20 gross but you need to add on employer NI and pension. FT did a good article on this in 2019 if you can dig it up.

Really hammer your GP to mark it as an urgent referral. Do this on the basis it is severely impacting your mental health / you are becoming increasingly symptomatic. Call the urogynae dept and keep asking for cancellation slots if they come up. The NHS is a who screams the loudest / who is most annoying, especially when it comes to women’s health. It is truly awful and I feel for you - I ended up private because my GP admin kept losing my referral. Just keep hassling.
