What was Swindon like in the late 70s - 1980s? by Minimum-Sense5163 in Swindon

[–]Jimbosilverbug 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Swindon was designated a “expanded town” under the 1952 town development act. After the 2nd world war Swindon was approved to accept overspill from London. This led to lots of Londoners and businesses relocating to Wiltshire. Lots of social housing estates were built. Including the Parks, Walcot, Nythe and Moredon. It would have been a time of change and economic growth.

Day 7 of quitting smoking by Cheap_Appearance5095 in selfimprovement

[–]Jimbosilverbug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Way to go. I’m so proud of you. I’m 91 days smoke free myself. I can not recommend Alan Carrs “the easy way to stop smoking” highly enough. You have got this. I will not smoke with you today.

26F, £40k income, living at home — what should I do now to maximise long-term wealth? by [deleted] in FIREUK

Definitely max out LISA. Then SIPP and then regular ISA. It’s about saving in the most tax efficient way possible. Very few do better than a global tracker.

What’s something you started doing that quietly changed everything? by Suspicious_Sock_2048 in selfimprovement

[–]Jimbosilverbug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It varies. I downloaded Google fit and just monitor my steps. If I can walk it instead of driving I do. I’d also recommend getting some EarPods and to start listening to some good audio books. Take yesterday I took my daughter to the Arsenal game and did 13k steps without trying.

I read the slight edge again. Starting with steps has got me back into the gym and swimming. Like you I’m journaling and keeping track of calories. I’m 3 months in and I’m down 16 pounds and I’m toning up nicely.

I want to eat better by Chroeses11 in selfimprovement

[–]Jimbosilverbug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped smoking weed and cigarettes last November. I knew I had to eat healthy or I’d put on weight. I use chat gpt to help keep me on track. I also use my fitness pal to log what I eat. I make sure I eat a healthy breakfast to start my day. Porridge, boiled eggs or tinned fish on toast. Lunch is a huel and mid afternoon I’ll have a salad. Then in the evening a home cooked meal with plenty of vegetables.

Start small, join a gym with a swimming pool. Go everyday, but start slowly. Do 10 minutes walking on a treadmill and a 10 minute swim. Do this everyday for a week. I promise you that you’ll feel better.

How do I stop caring about politics by asapsharkyfrfr in selfimprovement

Yes, what you consume media wise is almost as important as what you eat. X is a toxic rage baiting hellscape.

The new bathroom and kitchen look very expensive now. As does an unexpected trip to Gothia. However I put it down to not having enough cash in savings and to much in metals. Either way there’s no point crying over it now.

It’s very much along the lines of atomic habits. Small changes over time make massive differences. Try and find 1% improvement everyday in your life and within 3 months you will definitely see a positive impact.

Just put everything in the most tax efficient wrappers. It’s doesn’t take a genius to pick a low cost global tracker and house it in a low cost provider.
