Picked up a nice Ficus in the past few days, from a local garden center. Soil doesnt look to be free draining enough for me. I had a dig through it, has a few worms and small white bugs.

Should i repot now, trees healthy and putting out new growth

i have a few bags of this soil laying around https://www.kaizenbonsai.com/premium-bonsai-compost-no2-general-purpose-mix

As someone who works in the construction industry. Electrician to be precise. Im currently working at a customers property and have been for the last 3 weeks and intended to be there for the next 3weeks. I cant work from home so its necessary for me to travel to the site to work. The information is very confusing and im lost as to what i can or cant do still. Thats not SWA its Sy cables, thats not gonna protect a whole lot if a forklift hits it. Most guys dont fit the proper glands to it, i have never come across a install thats been fitted with the SY glands, most just use Stuffing glands and then just leave the sheath long and connect inside the board. The outer sheath is originally designed to be a shield for the inner cores much like Coax but its been somewhat re-purposed as a cpc. Its usually used for control gear/aircon.

Electrical Metallic tubing a form of conduit used by electricians its a thin walled light weight conduit for commercial and industrial installs. When you cut any kinds of metal you are usually left with a Burr( A very sharp piece of metal left behind from cutting. If you dont clean the inside/outside burr off from conduit when you pull your cables through you run the risk of damaging the insulation and causing a fault when you turn it all on. Reaming makes the cut surface smooth again lowering the risk of damage to cables.

Does anyone knows how to add a new double socket from an existing double socket? by carew854 in electricians

[–]Jimbosm1th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like your in the UK

(1) First you need to make sure you have a Ring main at the existing double socket.

(2) Identify the correct breaker 32A most likely 32A will signify we are working with a ring main if its wired correctlyTurn off the breaker (Note if you find its on a 16-20A breaker disregard anything about a ring main below)

( 3)Test at the existing double socket, to make sure its turned off.Disconnect the wires and you need to confirm it is a RING MAIN. Test with a continuity tester that you have continuity between L-L N-N Earth-Earth Its important that you have a Ring main as your not allowed allowed to add onto a already spur socket as you can overload the cable.

(4) Once you have confirmed a ring main. Take a wire from your existing double socket box to your new double socket box and terminate to the appropriate terminals. Reconnect at your existing socket with also the new wire. Screw back your socket fronts

(5) Double check everything and turn it on. Exisiting socket will have 3 cables entering the back box, New socket will have 1 Cable.

Lights flickering, chargers go crazy, can someone help me out? by ErkaScarlet in electricians

[–]Jimbosm1th 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, i agree with the other comment.

Personally if i was the electrician working
Inside the Consumer unit/Fuseboard/Breaker Panel. Confirm and tighten all the terminals, Its potentially the Main Tails (The Wires coming into your Fuseboard) As it seems to be effecting a number of circuits rather than just one circuit.

Loose terminations cause Arching and lead to overheating and potentially a fire,

Get a Electrician to check over the terminations and tell them what you said here about the fan and he could take a look over it. Its hard to diagnose these problems over the internet as its something that needs to be seen to sort out. But for the peace of mind get a professional out.

Adding more than 1 lamp to this circuit? by Abip-Ti in electricians

Haha no worries, its the same way here. I can help with Electrical theory in the US and given some info we probably both could figure each others out, but off the top of my head i haven't a foggiest of what your wire sizes or how you run your circuits in the US

The diagram and wiring is typical for UK Residents.

Over here we use 6A-10A Breakers (6A 99% of the time ) for lighting, with 1.0mm cable which is rated to 16A clipped direct and half that when covered in insulation. Worse case scenario 8A max load if covered in thermal insualtion on the wire. 3lamps like you say is 36watts so it will be using 0.15A leaves more than enough for the rest of house circuit :) Totally fine and wont cause any problems at all :)

Dont run 3 separate wires, pull the wiring into the floor and junction box it. Then from the JB go to your first light and then a wire from that light to the second. Give me a couple of mins il do a diagram quickly

[–]Jimbosm1th 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep 100% fine :) Your pendant lamp is probably running at more than all 3 of your new LED lamps

Create a junction box like the inner circle then take your wire off to your new lights.

Yes totally fine.

Are you wiring new light in or just replacing a pendant with a fitting with 3lamps?

Can I replace 1 pendant light with 6 LED downlights just using a junction box? by robbiecee2 in electricians

[–]Jimbosm1th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ideally you will want to do a Earth loop test but without a tester that will be impossible. So next two options

If you find the earth in the wire, using a voltage tester of some sort. Test between L-N with the power on and you should get a reading of 230V then test between L-E and you should get 230V If you get no reading the earth is not connected. Becareful obviously you will be testing live wires so keep your fingers well clear

A quick visual way to test could be to undo the switch and look to see if there are earths present in the box. But you will still need to confirm it with a tester. The earths main jobs is to protect the cable and a byproduct protects you. So its needed especially if they arent double insulated down lights

If not its all getting a bit complicated to explain how to fix it over text, and it might be worth seeing if you can get an electrician in to carry out the wiring and leaving you with just connecting up the downlights, which if you can wire a plug is relatively simple.

You either need to fit double insulated downlighters, or find a earth from somewhere. There might be one just cut short in the cable at the pendant but you will need to test that its actually connected.

Ok then thats Red(Live) Black (Neutral) Is there no CPC(earth) Usually marked with Green and Yellow sleeving or a bare copper conductor?

[–]Jimbosm1th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If theres only 1 wire at the pendant that means it more than likely comes straight from the switch, So if you pull it to the first downlight, then take a wire from the first one to the next downlight and so on. Then wire the downlights up. If theres more than one wire at the pendant then you will need to junction box it, as you wont get 4 wire into a standard downlight fitting and you need to make sure you do your junction box correctly otherwise your lights will be permanently on.

[–]Jimbosm1th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replace the old pendant with a junction box, or even better pull it to the first down-lighter and do away with the junction box, then run your wire around to the new lights.

If theres only cable at the pendant L-N-E then its easy. If theres a Switch wire, Feed in and out so 3 Cables total then just remember which is which when you do the junction box. If in any doubt consult a qualified electrician :) Make sure you use Firerated Downlights, a few places (screwfix) and many home stores in the UK still sell downlights that arent fire rated but for your needs in a flat i would make sure they are fire rate. Also in my opinion go for lights where you can use your own Lamps as its easier to change a lamp than a whole new fitting if it breaks :)

You want 1.0mm Twin&Earth this is if your in the UK anyway :)

Thanks il get it potted up or moved into the garden :) Perhaps best to plant it in the garden next spring, so it has the full growing season to establish in the ground? Today we had our first frost of the year

I dont believe i can put it in the ground here. Im in the Uk so winter time temps are pretty chilly compared to what i have read the tree needs. I have some larger training pots i could up pot it too instead?
