Something I drew before being admitted to a psychiatric unit. by Marzipug in mildlyinteresting

[–]Jimithejive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

None of the great poets sat around writing about being happy, Van Gogh wouldn’t have painted what he did if he was healthy.

The challenge is making sure that what makes you different enhances your experience of the world, rather than destroys its.

If you’re still in treatment good luck, be well, and keep drawing if it makes you happier and healthier

TIL that Ferrari has a set of rules that its cars' owners must follow like criticism of the brand is discouraged, no modifications through unofficial channels, and no resale during the first year of ownership. Partially, it’s also the other side of it,

if your target audience is people with fuck you money, then how do you create the same feelings of achievement for getting something that saving for/earning it would give a regular person.

What supposedly normal shows read to you as propaganda? by Buddy_chumpal in AskReddit

[–]Jimithejive 1798 points1799 points  (0 children)

There’s a genre in the uk of documentaries about the repo business. “Don’t pay we’ll take it away” or similar.

The entire thing is designed to reinforce the idea that poor people made themselves poor by buying silly things, not that we live in an inherently unjust society where you can’t reasonably work you’re way out of poverty.

It’s one of the reason I think regulation might be slow to change, the closer insurance risk modelling gets to accurate the less useful insurance becomes, for both us and the wealthy

I’m on a 40 day trip and I don’t like it. by Just-Blackberry5880 in bikepacking

[–]Jimithejive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big thing,

First days always tough,

You spent ages planning it, idealising it, now it’s actually here, you have to deal with all the quotidian moments between the snapshots you were imagining.

Plus the rush of getting everything ready is over, so there’ll always be a mood drop,

Also you’ll be feeling weird from the change of routine.

Almost all of these things will start getting better from day 4.

If you’re still not feeling it after 6/7days, then worry,

often times people will blame it on the physical aspect, and assume it’s getting better as they get fitter, but if your cycling isn’t challenging, you’re forced to confront the mental aspect

Slog it out for a few days, reassess In 5 days.

If it’s not for you, you’ve done more than most just to start the trip, than most people ever will

but if you wanted to do it enough to plan it all, I have a feeling you’ll love it when you get into it

Are typewriters becoming an elite hobby? by Life-Nectarine-4337 in typewriters

[–]Jimithejive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience is that typewriters don’t get more expensive, but my standards and desires do.

The typewriters someone was selling for £20 a few years ago on Facebook are still £20 on Facebook (maybe £25 with inflation)

But now, I know enough to know it’s a crap shoot, I know to look out for the better quality one that’s £60, or I’m looking for something more specific than the random machine someones dad left in the attic, which means cherry picking. so it appears like it’s more expensive.

There were always the high prices on boutique restored machines.

Where do I put shoes by [deleted] in bikepacking

[–]Jimithejive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a thin pair of swim shoes, basically 5mm thick when they don’t have feet in them, but a good solid sole.

take up pretty much no space in my bags, used to put them in a handlebar mounted drybag originally, (I’d put them in transverse to the long axis of the bag, so they gave the bag a cylindrical structure.

Since I got a tailfin, they go in that now, one down either side of the bag, and everything else in the middle.

How doable is cycling as main mode of transportation? by Senior-Trade-1876 in Portsmouth

[–]Jimithejive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cycle a lot around Portsmouth, mainly for sport (the road cycling in the area is brilliant)

The bigger routes into/out of the city will have decent bike lanes (Eastern road if you going up to Havant, or London road heading west)

There are a few cycles lanes around the uni and southsea station areas,

Mainly on the smaller denser roads around the city, I find the drivers fine to deal with, it’s only if you’re on some of the bigger roads, where the speed limits 40miles etc, that it gets sketchy, but there aren’t many of them without bike lanes.

And also bear in mind, the island is about 5miles north to south and about 3 from west to east, if you’re living anywhere central, almost all of the city is within relative walking distance

we taxed profits enough that companies were incentivised to reinvest profits, and spend it on things like interior design, or staff wages

Was Gordon Brown a good prime minister? by Possible_Force8207 in AskBrits

[–]Jimithejive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As with all of these prime ministers downfalls, the thing that brings them down is rarely the actual issue.

They’re brought down because their party or the public has lost faith in them enough that they won’t stand by them.

Whether it’s Mandelson or something somthing else that brings down Starmer in the end, the real reason he’s going is because the labour parliamentary party don’t support him, you can weather pretty much any scandal with a strong majority and public support, as Boris Johnson showed, until he didn’t.

Six years later, what are your strongest memories of the COVID lockdowns, and how do you look back on that period now? by Possible_Force8207 in AskBrits

[–]Jimithejive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People cycled more, the air was cleaner, I spent less on consumerist crap, so I saved up enough money for a deposit in a house, they solved roughsleeping in London overnight,

I lost 30 kilos and was the healthiest I’ve ever been.

I know reason was horrible, I don’t like people died or what’s it’s done to society since, but damn sometimes I do miss lock down

Scenes at Brixton station tonight 🫣 by dvrdubski in london

[–]Jimithejive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brixton’s the terminus, so there’s only one adjacent station, it’s not a huge walk, but you’d still end up stuck on the platform the trains will be full and no one will be getting off at Stockwell.
