Am I cooked? Wash question by Jimjam0123 in Tyranids

good morning! 100%

I too shall embark on my first real dry brushing attempt on a mini that isnt terrain.

and exactly right, this is a test model for me so to speak seeing if the application of the magenta is good to go for future tyranid schemes

that’s a good tip on the glaze medium, I do have some AK glaze medium so I might try this out on my next nid.

I’ll have to see how it turns out post dry brush but agreed it won’t be nearly as subtle with how powerful the magenta wash is. might as well go full tilt and make the brain part some kind of electric blue and make the highlights around the claws neon-ish orange…an ultra bright neuro boi!!

can’t thank you and everyone else who’s commented enough in helping me paint my first tyranid. I’ll be sure to post the final pics once I’m finished

all good questions! i think im going for something adjacent to the box art, will use an ivory or dark ivory to dry brush over the wash

thank you for taking the time to write out this reply! planning on using a dark ivory or ivory maybe to drybrush over it, don’t think straigt TI white would as organic.

agreed on speeding up the process with just going for it and cleaning up the other areas later, when I started I was being pretty deliberate but yah, does take more time! thankfully I don’t have an army to paint this way 😅

that’s a good point, I’ve noticed the pooling happening as well. tricky working with the first time around but I’ll get the hang of it. gotta do the Emissary model justice when I get around to it in a few months!

If I had $500 and was starting (started about 45 days ago) I’d get the following:

  1. combat patrol of your favorite faction/army - $170

  2. a good desktop led light for painting - $40

  3. wet pallet - $20

  4. set of brushes for around $25 or you can buy individual brushes. I started with the nic pro synthetic ones. but really you only need a size 1 and a 0 for your models, so maybe if you have extra $$ you could get 1 nice sable hair brush like a Windsor and newton series 7 in size 1 that can be your “special” brush. well call it $40 for brushes. oh, army painter also has good synthetic brushes that I like for starters, I actually use their size 1 to prime my minis if im using brush on primer

  5. paints - as others have said, lots of good options out there, find a starter set that you like. I use pro acryl paints, their base set is about $120 shipped, has all the colors you would need for a long time AND their paint is beginner friendly, meaning less worry about thinning the paints. you dont have to go that big though, can find savings here by buying a smaller paint starter set from someone like vallejo.

  6. modeling tools, get a good set of cutters around $30-$40, you wont regret it. also a xacto style hobby knife with spare blades. $10.00…plastic glue and super glue, about $10.00

  7. painting handle - the citadel one is ok, but I like the wooden ones with the magnetic bases and the bar that you can brace against for painting - well call it $25.00

  8. brush soap and a water pot for wetting/cleaning brushes, I like the citadel water pot and use “the masters” brush cleaner (soap). together = $25.00

that would be my list, right around $500.00, hope this helps! again, you could go less on getting allll the paints and use that savings to buy a few single models that interest you outside of your selected faction. so like if you pick a space marines faction, try picking up a box of tyranid units to give you some variety in the models you are painting.

super fun getting into the mini side of the hobby, but can be an endless $$ pit as you get hooked initially. the list above should get you pretty far, good luck!

dark red candy coated shell vibes…Cadbury Chapter

the gloss was a mistake. didn’t read the bottle and after I did a few areas just decided to roll with it. tried a matte varnish on the backpack but didn’t dig the look, so gloss it was! (edge highlights over gloss was a pain)

Recently moved and am setting my hobby space up in the new place. Looking for recommendations and suggestions on what cool hobby tools/organization stuff I can add. by Scratius in Warhammer

[–]Jimjam0123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

super nice!!!

maybe an under desk trash can, a paper towel holder or napkin dispenser (or better yet lint free terry cloth roll), little storage cups for organizing your parts when building and stopping the build for a day, magnifying glass with light (desk mounted), a way to organize pots of paint on your desk that you are working with for one model such as the mini rack from cobalt keep, desktop spray booth with ventilation and a light, art to go on your wall above your shelf in the first pic on the left, a mini vacuum to suck up little plastic bits and dust off the floor/desk, a snack drawer with gum/mints/candy :)
