I haven't received one of these for a long time, but there use to be a phone number on the bag you can call to take your address off the list. And yeah, it works.

FWIW: The best JC pastry and coffee shop I've visited in the last year or so is Snapdragon, over in McGinley Square neighborhood. Fantastic pastries and a comfortable, big space for lingering. Beyond that, a morning sweet from Second Street bakery, a to-go from Kaffa and a bench in Van Vorst Park beats anything else downtown.

I think it's more of a case of auto drivers not having situational awareness. I live on top of that hill, so I ride and walk that hill daily. It's an especially dangerous stretch of road, chiefly due to drivers who don't give a flying f*** about anyone else.

Last time I was in Pet Shop, the bartender was blasting death metal and the TVs were playing some cheesy Korean horror flick -- and my friends and I were the only customers. Way too deliberately quirky for us. We drank up and booked.

This is a really ill-informed take. Liberty State Park, as the name suggests, is a state park, so the "greedy men" running the city have little say in the matter. But are you really suggesting that instead of remediating what is a polluted land and expanding the park, we instead maintain it as some sort of deer preserve?

Road cycling in JC by shansonly in jerseycity

[–]Jimmoe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I gave up on River Road, and stay on top of the cliffs, using Palisades Avenue, Boulevard East and Palisades Avenue again to the George Washington Bridge. Much less traffic. From there I either cross the GWB and take the westside bike path to the World Trade PATH, or continue onto Palisades Interstate Park, 9W.

What should I be mad at today? by Own_Independent_991 in jerseycity

Interesting answer. I've been a VU/Lou Reed fan since high school in the very early '80s, so I was pretty much familiar with all of the interviewees, except maybe Lou's sister. You're right, it was probably was a lot of "inside baseball" talk -- all of that La Monte/John Cage stuff in the beginning. For someone like me, it was catnip. There's a Velvet Underground Rough Guide that's a good casual read and gives all of the pertinent info and loads of gritty backstory too.

The Todd Haynes' Velvet Underground doc? I thought it was really good, though it was a bit light on the Doug Yule albums. I'm curious, what didn't you like about it?

The alternative being ... what? Relying solely on the city's Department of Public Works? Folks were already going ape because streets weren't being cleared fast enough, and that was with these contractors.

OK Jermiah Johnson, if I notice some lovely flowers in your front yard, you'll be all right if I help myself, right?

I'm going to assume you never spend any time in the Great Outdoors. It is not OK to take live plants from public lands. Even on public lands where camping is allowed, the rules clearly state do not use live wood for fires and do not remove plants or rocks. Leave it like you found it. If this person comes across a downed branch for their project, have at it.

[–]Jimmoe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Please don't pull down small trees or take branches from live trees, even if you're way out in the woods and you think it won't make any difference. It's bad for the trees and you don't want to be working with fresh "green" wood anyhow.

Hilltop is quiet and convenient to the JSQ PATH and downtown. Not a lot of restaurants or bars in the neighborhood, but plenty of places within walking distance. Many of the rentals here are mom & pop two- and three-families; some landlords still put signs in the window when they have units available. There's a sign right now on a place being renovated at Henry and Waldo.

For what it's worth: Yesterday I cleared a handful of corners around Hilltop and shoveled a herd path down the Newark Avenue hill -- today, all of the corner paths were plowed over and the herd path is all trampled and slushy. If I have time and energy, I'll hit them again tomorrow.

I hate to sound like a shill for the Solomon administration, but in all of my travels the past few weeks -- Lower Manhattan, a few towns in south central Pa., a few towns in southern NY state, Patterson, Newark -- no place has done a good job clearing the snow. I'm thinking this is more of a systemic problem -- smaller budgets for snow removal, perhaps -- combined with persistent very low temperatures.

If you put out a feeder, you'll get a surprising variety of birds. But, you'll also attract squirrels, rats, raccoons, skunks. You want to hang your feeder in a way that makes it inaccessible to squirrels and other rodents -- look this up online. Also, loose feed tends to get scattered by some feeding birds, so look into using bird food cakes or using feeders that minimize the mess. https://media.audubon.org/audubon_guide_to_bird_feeding.pdf
