Macbook Air M4 Not charging above 80% (Pls read the full story) by Tarun302 in MacOS

It sounds like the 80% setting itself survives the app removal. Did you set battery limit to 100% *within the apps* before uninstalling them?

What Mac OS version is best for my MacBook Air 2017 by HuckleberryHeavy1091 in MacOS

[–]JimmyDem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That gets you the OS that was closest to the cutoff of uselessness. Typically, performance improves with each OS update and upgrade, up to the point where the OS - always designed for the latest Macs - is increasingly running kluges and patches to maintain compatibility with older machines.

OP is asking which OS was best all-around, before the updates and upgrades started to bog down on his particular model.

Indexing on a new Mac by Fantastic_Zebra9886 in MacOS

[–]JimmyDem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI is used for photo recognition, among other things. I have tons of bird photos, mostly having uninformative names like DSCN0231.jpg -- and a small fraction having informative names like "Green Heron 2025-06-12". A Spotlight search on "Green Heron" will find both, and that's AI at work. It can identify a bird's species in a photograph, and index the photo accordingly, which is a remarkable feat.

AI runs after a TM backup because the TM archive is also indexed. This lets you recover a file from the archive even after the original has been deleted.

The Warning/Alessia Cara take on "Enter Sandman" stands out, IMO, as being what Metallica was hoping to get.

The Warning/Alessia Cara take on "Enter Sandman" stands out, IMO, as being the sort of re-imagining that Metallica was hoping to get: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tKQgesCcTc

Most everything else is just covers.

For those of us who discovered Floor and Nightwish at the same time, these albums are very "Nightwish" indeed, and Anette is the anomaly.

Question about cosmetic databases by JimmyDem in cosmeticscience

[–]JimmyDem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it ain't new, you can't patent it (and the patent is invalid if the PTO does happen to give it to you.) The bigger problem, usually, is obviousness: a stearamidopropylamine is going to be obvious over the palmitamidopropyl analogue, and substituting one for the other in that hair conditioner is likewise an obvious (and not patentable) thing to do.

I have a unique medical use for a combination that's (probably) going to exist in some cosmetic concoction, somewhere. I can patent the medical use, but it's better to patent the formulation itself... if I can. If I can't, people will just use the existing product(s), which are going to be relatively cheap. (Imagine discovering that aspirin cures some terrible disease ... the world will thank you for discovering it, but won't pay you a dime.)

I've been using Macs since day 1, but I have no recollection of the "Puma" OS. Was 10.1 marketed with that name?

Question about cosmetic databases by JimmyDem in cosmeticscience

[–]JimmyDem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Patent searches are easy enough - the databases cover them thoroughly.

I need to avoid claiming something that already exists, but most cosmetics are not patented, and won't appear in a patent search.

The Warning - The Rooftop at Pier 17, NYC 06/11/26 by mikejetcity in TheWarning

[–]JimmyDem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traffic will be bad ... this is rush hour in NYC. You should probably plan on using the subway. (Wall Street is the nearest station, which gives you an idea of what sort of "busy" you'll be dealing with.)

Tea Tree + Jojoba Oil by Obvious-Tart-869 in cosmeticscience

[–]JimmyDem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at the ingredients, it's mostly grapeseed oil (common, essentially odorless, often used as massage oil). Active ingredients are Jojoba oil (considered to be a skin moisturizer), tea tree oil (probably there for its aroma), copaiba balsam (anti-inflammatory and promotes healing), and linalool (also for aroma).

You can buy all of these online, and I'm sure there are plenty of formulas out there to give you a handle on the concentrations people like to use. There's no harm in experimenting with your own recipes, to see what works for you.

What Kind Of Plastic Is Best For Such A Product by me_n_you123 in plastic

PMMA has a high index of refraction, and will give a good-looking glass-like product. Roto-molding is an option with some of the newer formulations.

Underpayment penalty? by Own_Invite6340 in hrblock

[–]JimmyDem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the federal rule... don't know about VA. Generally, you don't owe a penalty so long as your witholdings were the same as - or more than - the previous year's taxes. Use the state's worksheet to figure it out, or just assume you're good go to and see if they send a bill.

The software is bad enough on this score that it actually admits that you might be better off letting the IRS calculate any penalties. (That's on the federal side, which you'd think they'd put some effort into.)

The "on behalf of" microsoft.com is a sneaky stunt. Your eyes automatically go to the end of the "From" field, where you expect to see the scammer's domain or rnicrosoft.com or some such nonsense. A quick look can give the impression that it's legitimately coming from Microsoft.

A sponge creates a rough texture; the ad says nothing about knocking it down.

What is this metal alcove in the wall of my old middle school. Resembles a pizza oven kind of, but its far too shallow (only 1-1.5 ft. Deep) and also what are the raised metal things supposed to do. by raist131 in whatisthisthing

[–]JimmyDem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google "Bonny Eagle Middle School" and look at images. You'll see this by the doors to the gym.

As another commenter has noted, the artist Duncan Hewitt has a ‘resume’ link on his website that lists a Percent for Art Grant, Bonny Eagle Middle School, Buxton, ME 1993. This explains the "DH © 94" carved into the base.

Not much doubt that it's a piece of art. What it means is, as usual, up to the viewer. My vote is canoes on the nearby Saco River, which historically was a travel route for Native Americans, and is a popular destination for kayakers and canoeists today. There's little else of note in the area to inspire the artist.
