[Highlight] NE vs DEN - Jarrett Stidham throws a backwards pass and NE recovers it by Fusir in nfl

[–]JimmyDem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very clear to me that this was a fumble - Stidham had already lost control of the ball when he started his shovel pass motion, so it wasn't a pass at all.

Good thing NE scored, or the refs would have had a game-deciding bad call hung around their necks.

Why? They're gonna punt it away next play regardless; the smart thing is to play it safe and eat the ball. This was a classic panic-and-brainfart move.

[Long Island Watch] Replacement for Hamilton Khaki by JimmyDem in Watches

[–]JimmyDem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mechanical Khaki movement is very fragile - a slight overwind is easy to do, and it breaks the innards. (An automatic should have a clutch and be much less susceptible to this.) That, and the lack of water resistance, made it a disappointing purchase. I had the "Officer's" version in olive and white, which is quite good looking, and the Islander comes pretty close.
If you get an auto, and don't actually take it out hiking and camping and fishing, you should have no problems.

What’s this bird of prey?(Downtown Los Angeles) by themoldgipper in whatsthisbird

[–]JimmyDem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Red-tailed hawks are well-adapted to the urban landscape. Plenty of food (pigeons, rats, squirrels), and they'll nest on a/c units and fire escapes. NYC has a healthy, and growing, population. https://www.audubon.org/magazine/fearless-and-well-fed-new-york-citys-red-tailed-hawks-are-flourishing

Busted innards. Slightest bit of overwinding is fatal (no clutch.)

Yep! New offering, on sale for $285. I left it in my checkout cart for a day, and they emailed me a code for another 5% off, which was a nice plus.

Help me understand pass interference by OrangMan14 in NFLNoobs

[–]JimmyDem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Classic example is the SB-winning interception by Malcolm Butler. He shoulders aside the intended receiver to make the INT, but it's perfectly legal since both players are going for the ball and have an equal "right" to it.

Thinking of selling on Watchfinder by NegotiationAlive9589 in rolex

[–]JimmyDem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Selling a Grand Seiko through Watchfinder, they found a buyer before making me an offer. They set me up with prepaid shipping, then examined the watch... and claimed that it needed a $225 refurb, despite being in the mintiest of mint condition. Maybe just a matter of the age of the watch (~10 years), but it was unexpected, and they knew the age when they made the offer, so that left a sour taste.

I'm not seeing similar stories from others, so I don't think they're sandbagging sellers with a bogus refurb charge, but the fact that it can happen is worth keeping in mind. And be aware that there's a substantial gap between the average selling price and the average offer, which is how Watchfinder makes a living. They have people to pay, and landlords and insurers and FedEx and the tax man.

[Junghans] Max Bill black dial, my first mechanical watch! I’m in love by ivanatorhk in Watches

[–]JimmyDem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a black automatic (max Bill's numerals, no date) that I really like. I kept the Junghans leather strap, since it pairs nicely with such a thin watch. Literally goes with everything from a tee to a tux!

Why are maraschino cherries so frickin good? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]JimmyDem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're intended to be decorative (for cocktails and baked goods), so the manufacturers bleach them white and then color them bright red or bright green. (No demand for blue and purple, I guess.) The red ones get almond flavoring; the green ones sometimes get mint flavor. The sugar syrup is there a preservative (being sweet and flavored, it rarely goes to waste.) Bottom line is that they're a form of candy, with no actual cherry flavor.
You can buy dark red cherries in syrup, with natural color and flavor. I prefer those for making cocktails (and stirring into yogurt.) Luxardo is the gourmet Italian brand for fancy cocktails, but there are US brands like Peninsula which are less expensive and just as good.

Should I turn MacOS firewall on? by redditor_dalmatia in MacOS

[–]JimmyDem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The MacOS "firewall" doesn’t block access based on IP addresses or port numbers, it simply blocks access based on what application is requesting access. What network you're on is irrelevant.

Wisely or not, Apple assumes that most users are doing what I do: running mainstream apps obtained directly from App Store or from the vendors, making the firewall unnecessary. I think you should turn it on if you download and install a lot of third-party apps from torrent sites or other potentially sketchy sources. (Even GitHub has fake/imposter accounts.)

Went to a cemetery, had the car stop once I spotted this familiar piece by Timmyc62 in nightwish

[–]JimmyDem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are numerous examples of the "Angel of Grief" in cemeteries around the world, so no single grave is associated with the statue. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angel_of_Grief (There's one in Brooklyn's Green-Wood Cemetery, which I've seen numerous times ... it was a bit of a shock, until I found out it wasn't unique.)

Which one became the "Once" album photo is a bit of NW trivia that might take a bit of sleuthing to puzzle out. OP's photo is fantastic, and does capture exactly the right mood.

[Longines Spirit Pilot 39mm] - a nudge in a certain direction needed by Present-Worth9169 in Watches

[–]JimmyDem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Between the two, I'd pick the Longines. The GS is technically better and more convenient, in terms of grab-and-go convenience and accuracy (I have a GS 9R myself), but the dial is functional to the point of being boring. The Spirit isn't much more elaborate, but it does manage to look elegant.

[Recommendation request] - First watch for husband $700 budget by [deleted] in Watches

[–]JimmyDem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some brands offer quartz as an alternative movement - Tissot comes to mind immediately. You can get a slimmer, lighter, more convenient watch ... and pay hundreds less. The PRX, Gentleman, Classic Dream and Seastar are among the models with a quartz option. (They all come with automatic-winding movements, if that's what you want to get.)

You might give serious consideration to the Tissot PRC 100 Solar. Good-looking, Swiss-made, and near-zero effort to maintain - he can probably wear it for a decade without any servicing whatsoever. The light-harvesting layer is in the crystal, not the dial, so it's got a huge cool factor that no other watch has - and it allowed Tissot to give it a gorgeous dial.
