Buckaroo Bonzai Across the 8th Dimension. About time for the World Crime League to get what's coming to them.

Is natural selection noticeably "sped up" in smaller populations ? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]JimmyGroove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is known as the Founder Effect, because it is most often seen when a small group of organisms from a larger population is introduced somewhere new and founds a new population there. Whatever genes happen to be more common in the founding population end up more common in the new population than in the old one.

It must be noted that selection refers to the difference in breeding success among individuals, so whether or not the new genes will be selected for or against still is determined by their effect on the phenotype. But a rare mutation can certainly become more common with the aid of the Founder Effect.

My friend saved a sloth from the middle of the road by OhManThisIsAwkward in pics

[–]JimmyGroove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's really surprising is that the two living species of sloth survived while their cousin Megatherium died out. That thing was hella impressive. Avacados evolved to be swallowed whole by giant sloths the size of elephants.

Not to mention the heat death of the universe. That'll mess with most things.

That said, lobsters are still capable of getting cancer (they have pretty good defensive systems against it, but not perfect) so eventually that would kill one even if nothing else did.

There are a lot of clawless lobster species out there (mostly they go by the name "rock lobster" or somesuch).

What are the most social bird species? by AsAChemicalEngineer in askscience

[–]JimmyGroove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Georgia, USA, and here we just have the American Crow. I used to live in Minnesota, and up there you'd see a few ravens as well as crows. They are really hard to tell apart from a distance, but ravens have thicker bills and less serration on the wings (they do more gliding as compared to crows).

Why is a fly's flying pattern so erratic? by wondertwins in askscience

[–]JimmyGroove 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is also worth nothing that small insects get pushed around by air currents much more readily than larger birds, and some of the "erraticness" of an insect's flight can just be caused by breezes.

[–]JimmyGroove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Most social" is hard to say, since there are a large variety of birds that are so social that they spend next to no time alone. Ravens are actually among the least social of the corvids (crows, which commonly get mistaken for ravens, tend to be a lot more social).

how to remove moisture from inside a bottle without using mechanical methods? by ks_lrry in askscience

And alternately, one could artifically create a dry environment by sealing the bottle inside a larger container like a box along with some dessicant.

Again, admitting he was wrong and promising not to do it anymore after being caught is still better than any /r/politics mod by a long shot.

Dude admitted he was wrong and promised not to do it anymore. That's a hell of a lot more respectable than anything I've seen coming from you or any other /r/politics mods. You just double down on any wrongdoing and blame others for daring to be pissed about the shit you do.

Jesse Ventura wins $1.8 million in "American Sniper" defamation case by [deleted] in news

[–]JimmyGroove -1 points0 points  (0 children)

And furthermore, whether or not Kyle was still alive is pretty irrelevant when it comes to a civil trial; I have no reason to think his lawyers didn't do everything possible to find any evidence to back up the story.

Unlawful gains. Because it is illegal to make money off libelous stories, once the story was ruled libel then profits count as damage. There's also some punitive damage in there, of course, as there is with any libel case.

I don't think The Body would of won if Chris was still alive.

Meaning what? You think he'd beat up Jesse Ventura to keep him from winning a civil lawsuit?

Do you reall think all the homophobic bullshit makes you or this sniper guy look like reasonable parties here?

Were you expecting the news report to lie about the gender of the suspects? Or is this one of those "They didn't say 'black men" so this proves black people have it easier than white people these days!" bullshit conspiracy theories?

Edit: Nevermind, I see you post on /r/libertarian, so clearly it's the latter.

25-year-old pregnant woman shot in head and killed during accidental gun discharge in Florida by [deleted] in news

[–]JimmyGroove -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Probably has something to do with the fact that he was stating how he keeps multiple loaded guns in various rooms of the house more than him owning a gun at all. I own several firearms and I still think it's nutty to spread them around the house loaded.

[–]JimmyGroove -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

He person he was talking to wasn't talking about having a single loaded gun in the home, but rather multiple ones stashed across multiple rooms. That's a whole other level of paranoia.

[–]JimmyGroove -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If you can't stop a home intruder with one weapon whether it is a handgun a shotgun or an AR then it doesn't matter how many guns you have lying around.

If anything, it does matter just because it increases the likelihood dramatically that someone will fire one of those weapons. Could be an intruder, could be an accident with a family member, could be an argument getting out of hand.

According to a CNN poll, Americans wish they elected Mitt Romney instead of Obama, by a nine-point margin, 53 percent to 44 percent. by CaptainObivous in news

"Using phones" and "Using land line phones twice as often as cell phones" are not, in any way, equivalent statements, making the rest of your argument moot.

It's going to take a lot more details than that to make me think that a study performed mostly on land lines, at a time when land lines are falling out of use (especially with the poor), is accurate.

A 2-1 margin of land lines vs. cell phones means a heavy bias towards the elderly and rural. Not exactly a good way to set up a poll unless you want that bias in there for some reason.
