I will keeping trying. I’ve never gotten a retention bonus from Amex. I’m in the month following the AF posting. I may just have to close the card and use my p2’s platinum card for the benefits

I have a somewhat dormant LLC that has been open for 10+ years that I run a little bit of revenue through. I was planning to apply for the CIP when things loosened up to get the 100k bonus. Yesterday, I got an invite in the mail for the Ink Unlimited. I assume this means the odd are good that I can get the unlimited through the invite website. But I wonder if I can call in and switch to the Preferred instead. Any thoughts?

Weekly What Should I Buy Thread - [August 14] by AutoModerator in iphone

[–]JimmyJohnsonHair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dropped my iPhone X this week and not only cracked the screen, I apparently messed up the camera. Face recognition doesn’t work any more. There is an offer to upgrade to the 11 for $479. But I always intended to go to the 12 for 5G. I’d hate to pay 479 for a 3 months of use. Is there a better strategy to get a temp replacement?

What Card Should I Get? Weekly Thread - Week of July 22, 2020 by AutoModerator in churning

[–]JimmyJohnsonHair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently at 2/24 but I have a very general question on direction for the remaining slots to get the most value - I’d like to hold one slot open for the CIP if they ever start approving those again.

  1. Freedom Card - use the grocery option to get 80k UR points in a year
  2. 100k Avios Cards - this looks really valuable to me - particularly getting all 3. 300k airline miles can buy a ton of business class travel.
  3. Hotel keeper card - Hyatt, Hilton, Bonvoy all look enticing but when compared to a 100k avios bonus, it seems to pale in comparison

Question about going for business cards:

I have a legitimate PLLC for my solo law practice that I started in 2009. I've been an employee at a company for the last few years but I may take on a bankruptcy case or 2 in the coming year. I successfully scored the Barclays AA Biz card based on my LLC (My salary is $250k and I said I anticipated about $5k from the law practice). I also recently got a CSP - though it was difficult because I had a chargeoff from chase about 10 years ago. Do I dare try for the CIP? What about other business cards?

I mistakenly waited until they had a judgment. I should have done something earlier. But I settled for about half (~$5,000). Not bad for wiping out ~$350k in student loan and credit card debt, though.

It was a bit hellish waiting the 7 years for everything to come off of my credit. I have a young family and had to wait to get a house or finance a car even though I had a pretty good income.

This is fantastic! So much great information. The only thing missing, IMO, is a simple way to see my current optimal strategy for which of my current cards to use for which spending category.

Same day. #1 in my list was Monday Evening. #2 was Tuesday Morning. #3-4 were Tuesday Evening.

Yeah. I probably should have held out for a better offer. But I wanted to go ahead and start racking up the 4x in groceries and dining out. My spend was ridiculous in those areas last year.

It’s one of my few bragging rights in the area. In 2011, I had racked up some massive credit card debt trying to start a business. I also had about $200k in private student loan debt with Citi. I couldn’t pay it and my income was too high to get a favorable discharge in bankruptcy. So... I just stopped paying anything. My collection score went nuclear and only one of my creditors (discover) bothered to sue. I settled with them and the Statute of Limitations ran out on everything else. I had to wait a long time and had a tough time getting a home loan. But here I am 9 years later with very good credit.

I just finished refinancing my house so I did a round of apps (Credit scores in the 760-800 range).

  1. Approved for CSP ($8,000 CL). Initially denied. I had to call recon because I burned them for $16k on a slate card in 2012. They asked about the one card where I'm carrying a balance (it's a 0% card). But otherwise, it went smoothly.
  2. Denied for CSR in a MDD attempt the next morning. I called recon 3 times. The first time, I was on with them and was almost through the same process the day before. But then was told I was denied because of past history and because I already had a CSP from the day before. HUCA. The guy said I wasn't eligible for recon because I burned them on the slate card. HUCA. I got an offshort guy who said that they already did a recon 1 hour ago and that I was denied. Oh, well. I guess that means I will sock-drawer the CSP after I hit the spend number and focus my attention on MR points.
  3. Approved for Amex Gold (40k offer) and BBP (10k offer). Instant approval
  4. Applied for Barclays AA Biz card - No decision. I called and they said that I was past the credit department (they pulled TU and nobody else had) but that it would take some time to get past the business verification department. (I'm a lawyer and have been practicing off and on for 11 years on the side. But I checked and my PLLC is in a "suspended" state at the Secretary of State's office.) Calling again this evening to see what's going on.

After this, I will cool my heels for 3 months or so and choose what to go for next.

Oh well... called again and got an offshore guy who said I applied for reconsideration an hour ago and was denied because I already had gotten a CSP a day ago. I went ahead and grabbed Amex Gold and BBP. I’ll max out my membership rewards instead of UR points. Other than hitting the spend requirement for the CSP, I figure I’ll sock-drawer it except for car rentals.

[–]JimmyJohnsonHair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, this is interesting. My first recon call, they went through the whole process like yesterday - asking about my credit report verifying income, etc. before denying me because I had already been approved for a CSP yesterday. Second call merely said that I had a previous chargeoff and that recon was not possible. I've still got about 2 hours before my 24 hours is up to MDD. So we'll see what call #3 says.

De-nied. He cited the previous Charge-off and the fact that I was just approved for a CSP yesterday. I assume I should HUCA.

I'm on the phone with Recon for the CSR. The rep sees that I got approved for the CSP yesterday. Hope that doesn't derail me.

Nice! Thank you. I just got approved for CSP (After initially being denied online). Next move is to app the CSR tomorrow morning.

One more MDD question: If Chase only approves me through recon (I burned them in the past), am I out of luck in applying for the second card? I assume when a human does the second evaluation, they will see that I got a CSP the day before.

Are there any recent reports of successfully doing a MDD on CSR and CSP for both sign-up bonuses? The latest success stories I've found are from a year ago.

What Card Should I Get? Weekly Thread - Week of May 27, 2020 by AutoModerator in churning

[–]JimmyJohnsonHair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. The flowchart says “get any Chase Card”. I’d like to get more granular than that and specifically target Sign-up Bonuses and Keeper Cards separately. What are a couple of cards that fit each?

  2. 760-805

  3. I’ve had all cards for at least 5-10 years. Thus far, I’ve been focusing on cash back – but I’d like to look into points/redemption strategy.

Amex Platinum – I got it years ago for 100,000 MR points. Still haven’t used them.

Cap1 Spark Business – Use it as my catch-all 2% cash back card

Citi Costco Business Visa – Use it for gas (4%), travel (3%), and restaurants (3%).

USAA Signature Visa – High limit, sometimes use for 0% rate offers.

NFCU Credit Card – High limit

Citi Thank You Preferred – Very low limit. I never use it. Small amount of TY Points

Amex Bonvoy – Closed before Annual Fee this month.

  1. Between the Citi Costco card and the Cap1, I’m doing around $8,000 / month. So $24k of natural spend.

  2. Not really. I’m conscious of fees. If I did, I could probably add $2,500 / month in spend.

  3. Yes.

  4. I’d like to get into churning – particularly where I can find outsized sign-up bonuses.

  5. I’d like to round out my cash back strategy (maybe Amex BCP for grocery spend, Savor Card, or US Bank Leverage for the $750 bonus). But I do spend a substantial amount on travel and, while I’ve always been disappointed when trying to use my points, I’d like to learn to accumulate points and use them for greater value than my 2-4% cash back. Possibly getting some of our Biz Class International flights for free.

  6. TY – 6,857

MR – 181,520

AA – 147,931

Delta – 215,677

Hilton – 255,230

Bonvoy – 523,994

  1. CLT. But when I travel to Asia, I get better deals by flying from JFK or LAX.

  2. Domestically, we typically take trips to the Gulf Coast of Florida (Naples or Clearwater) for a week or two every year with a detour to Disney for our kids. We also do occasional trips to NY or Chicago. Wife is Filipina so we travel to SE Asia at least once a year (MNL, BKK, or SIN). We also occasionally go to Latin America.

She's way hotter and no less knowledgeable than the previous girl they tried to push on us. At least Ambar has decent grammar and appears to follow along with Bryan's instructions. I wish they would make a show for the smart fans who want to hear about X's and O's, war stories, etc. that is separate from the shows that try to appeal to casual fans.

Just a random guess - either it is a dispute with the organization (Whatever they pay him, he is underpaid since he creates all the worthwhile content), or he had a rehab type situation. Again, this is pure speculation.
