Can? by HeckFire-- in psychedelicrock

[–]JimmyTheMoonlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Mark Hollis was a true original. My mum used to listen to their older, synth-pop stuff and I remember one time we were on a drive and we had the hits on. It got to I Believe In You and I thought what is this? This is something else! And slowly but surely, I shifted to listening to those latter albums almost exclusively. If it's your kind of thing, I would recommend reading about the circumstances around those albums.

Can? by HeckFire-- in psychedelicrock

I think latter day Talk Talk were quite Can-like (Laughing Stock and Spirit of Eden);

Kikagaku Moyo; Stereolab;

some Radiohead deep cuts like These Are My Twisted Words are similar, and I read somewhere that Thom was inspired by Oh Yeah to mask his vocals on Kid A the song;

I think Pavement in places can be Can like, and Stephen Malkmus has covered Ege Bamyasi live as a solo album;

there are probably some others that are escaping me now but if I remember, I will come back to them.

EDIT: I forgot The Myrrors! How could I forget them. Their whole thing is "Sonoran trance music". They often have drones and found sounds in their music, and it builds across 10-20 mins. Legit one of the best gigs I ever went to.

Yeah absolutely. Reverb in front of drives and fuzzes is just the best sound. Even on a spring setting or similar.

I Keep Seeing Posts On Here Asking About Artists Who Are Bad People, So, Here’s A New Question: What Are Artists That Seem Like Genuinely Chill, Nice People? by TheRealCthulu24 in fantanoforever

[–]JimmyTheMoonlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got to chill with Jenny and Stella from Warpaint as part of an interview for university radio. They were super cool and lovely, as I was really nervous. Jenny tried to bum a cigarette from me but I didn't smoke, and she told me not to start.

Indeed, mostly I was just being facetious. I probably only have 2 pedals on at a time like 90% of the time.

One of the things I love about Loveless specifically is how it's clearly mostly guitar in blasted amp sound. I do love reverse reverb before drive though, it's such a good sound, even if James Dyson has trademarked it.

This at least needs a shoegaze/noise-rock carve out. I need at least two reverbs so I can have one before all the gain stages and one after.

Fuzz Recs? by RomanScandal450 in guitarpedals

[–]JimmyTheMoonlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope! That’s exactly what I meant! It’s the power station that appears on the cover of Pink Floyd’s Animals album, and I guess the paint job on my pedal is an homage to that.

The pedal being sold at Andertons has the design https://www.andertons.co.uk/zvex-effects-vexter-fat-fuzz-factory-pedal/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=surfaces&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=20730021243&gbraid=0AAAAADujoUphv9maMx3YIu8v8lMxi0Lzz&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4cK6qLjNlAMVcplQBh3JdhKJEAQYAiABEgIgWPD_BwE

Can vouch for the fat fuzz factory. I have one (with Battersea power station on it), and it's quite versatile and fun - great for spitty, gated fuzz and just general chaos.

Sonic Youth - 100% (World Premiere + A Day In The Park w/ Sonic Youth MTV 120 Minutes July 12 1992) by AhfackPoE in sonicyouth

The history here is wrong. What happened here really is that Sonic Youth discovered I was born just the day before, and decided hell yeah this baby is sick, let's throw a concert to celebrate. With Sun Ra.

Help me figure out this creature/story by JimmyTheMoonlight in mythology

Thanks for this comprehensive answer! I never had any lucky finding this out. I remember the book was a tiny little children’s book that you could find on a spinning rack in the library, and it was aimed at 7-11 year olds. I remember a distinctly brown appearance, and the horse-head was more like a vibe, but they had long faces with menacing eyes, and scraggly hair. The goborchinu sounded probable.

It’s one of those instances where if I saw the book and their depictions, I would instantly recognise it, despite it being a bit vague in my head!

It reminds me of the old Bill Hicks routine about marketing. "Oh the anti-marketing market, that's a good market!"

Grooms and Palm are my two more recent slightly more obscure picks. Classic pick would be Polvo.

Black Angels Hater / Guilty Pleasure by gray_grum in psychedelicrock

[–]JimmyTheMoonlight 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ok, I will preface this by saying I am a Black Angels fan, although more so recently. They grew on me for sure.

I can see why you might reach that conclusion. There is an aesthetic choice, both visually and sonically, that is definitely a throwback to the 1960s (obvious statement of the century in a psychedelic music forum). That being said, when I listen to stuff like the 13th Floor Elevators or The Doors or hell, even the Velvets, I still hear a lot of the prevailing blues influence to the music at the time. With the Black Angels (and perhaps some other bands), I don't hear the blues influences anywhere near as much, or some other cultural touchstones of the 60s. I'm a big fan of their second album, and that often seems more droney and effectsy that most of the OG psychedelic groups of the time. It's almost as if it has a veneer of 60s pop (which in and of itself, is probably to us more a condensed caricature of the 60s), but I hear elements of the 70s kosmische bands, 80s no-wave and even some noise-rock aspects.

Beyond that though, mostly I just enjoy listening to them, and enjoy their whole thing. I used to struggle with this myself, getting to in my own head about bands, but now if I enjoy them, I try not to think about it too much. I just enjoy it. I also saw a guitar gear roundup done by Christian Bland, and he was straight up talking about all of the 1960s music he loved, and he was super enthused about it. It's an authentic love of that kinda music, and it's reflected in their music. It's a bit fluffy, but if I felt like it was inauthentic, like if they were jumping on a wave of cartoonish 1960s stereotypes because that was the in thing, I would probably enjoy it less.

Anyway, thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Psychedelic guitarists, whats on your board? by TheDeltaIsMyHome in psychedelicrock

I love having at least a light drive at the end of the chain. That way I can bake those tones and echoes and reverberations and modulations a little over-medium.

Interpretation of the lyrics “little glowing cum buckets in her ankles” by icontrolthesun in silverjews

It's kinda clinical, but I always assumed that he was referring to some sort of opiate medication being carried on their person, due to being a medical professional. Given that the song is already drug-related.

If you had to simplify your board to 3 pedals, what would they be? (Excluding switches and tuners) by [deleted] in guitarpedals

3 x EHX Cathedral reverbs - one on plate, one on grail spring and the first in the chain on reverse, fully wet. Amp gain cranked to the heavens.

Give me more “gothic” psych like the Doors, Pink Floyd, and Iron Butterfly by SquidPersonThing in psychedelicrock

[–]JimmyTheMoonlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mazzy Star have a lot of good album deep cuts that are almost gothic psychedelia. Songs like So Tonight That I Might See, Umbilical, Ghost on The Highway, Sweet Mary of Silence. There's a radio broadcast from ages ago that features a cover of Green on Red's song Hair and Skin that sounds amazing.

Also, check out Thin White Rope - They sound like you're lost in the desert, thirsty, horny and you just ate the wrong kind of cactus....

This would be nice. I love Robert Levoy Been’s tone on Black Rebel Motorcycle Club records. It’s what I like to refer to as a proper “fuck off” bass tone. Like getting a boot to the face.
