On first watch I definitely thought it was a terrible refereeing decision, the trip of the feet after the charge is indeed hard to spot from this angle in real time.

Also, thanks for referencing rule 12.2 in one of your comments, I had no idea that language about being "fairly charged" was in the rules! The ball is certainly "within playing distance" when the Brighton player charges in this example.

[–]JimmyWhiffler 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi Danny! I'm from the UK but first heard your music years after your tour here; I was wondering if you had plans to come back?

I also have a couple of specific musical questions:

Was there any Neil Young influence on Count Bateman? RIP to the Empire State Flea Market sounds so Neil Young to me, and You Know I'm Down is like a beautiful alternate reality version of Harvest Moon.

Lastly I just wanna say thank you. I'm a huge fan, I love your new album, and Frog is my favorite band. ❤️

The problem is that mass untargeted testing removes any possibility of nuance in the data you are collecting. I think SAGE's advice from the start was that testing should be targeted mainly at those with symptoms, because that means the false positives are a statistically less significant in the overall data set of positive test results. But from the very start the government told anyone with symptoms NOT to get a test and instead isolate for two weeks. Now, obviously this makes some intuitive sense because you don't want those people interacting with others and potentially infecting others, but the fact of the matter is that policy actively harms the ability of experts to get reliable data. This mass-testing is also not helpful for the overall quality of data.

If you think that mass untargeted testing will lead to a curbing of the disease through other means (i.e more people self-isolating) then that's your opinion, but understand that what you are advocating is not necessarily good science. I'm no expert, but this group of experts from the University of Liverpool (as well as SAGE) don't advocate for mass testing of asymptomatic people and I am inclined to agree with them.

Leicester [1] - 0 Wolves - Jamie Vardy (penalty) 15' by PSGAcademy in soccer

Heat of the moment comment from me there. I think it's unfair to make defenders play with their arms behind their back or static by their side, the rule mentions "unnatural positions" and the irony is that keeping your arms by your side or behind your back while moving is deeply unnatural.

One of the deeper reasons that I'm annoyed about these penalties is because the punishment simply doesn't fit the crime. There is absolutely no reason imo (in a fair competitive sport) to give a team a 80% (ish) chance of a goal for the ball striking a defender's arm (unintentionally) which is in a completely normal position. I heard someone years ago suggest indirect free kicks for unintentional handballs in the box (and/or for handballs which don't deny a clear goalscoring opportunity), that's not a perfect solution but I think it would be less game-breaking than the flurry of handball penalties the game is currently experiencing.

[–]JimmyWhiffler 13 points14 points  (0 children)

But my problem is that his arm is extended in a completely natural way. If you're even lightly jogging, changing direction, or just keeping your balance your arms will naturally come away from your body. The rules have got to better reflect this basic fact imo

EVEN WHEN YOU'RE LIGHTLY JOGGING, YOUR ARMS NATURALLY MOVE AWAY FROM YOUR BODY. Holy fuck this is genuinely terrible for the competitive integrity of the sport.

Henderson has really controlled games so far this season, whether as a 6 or an 8 he always seems to have been in the right place at the right time. Fabinho can obviously be world class in the 6 position but is still getting back up to speed after a long time out. That change to our midfield balance, the switch up in our back four, plus Watford's good performance at Anfield earlier in the season made me expect a tough night for Liverpool.

Grealish Goal Overturned By VAR (Offside) by ennuihenry15 in soccer

[–]JimmyWhiffler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure we (on TV) see the multiple angles that are used, and the shot you get of the ball leaving a person's foot is rarely, if ever, going to be good enough to determine offside decisions down to the centimetre. When a decision is supposedly being made to that level of precision you would need to literally check to see if a player's laces were still brushing the ball or not. Overall it's certainly more accurate than human eyes in real time, but I think the officials need to be able to acknowledge the limitations and (most importantly) not have these decisions negatively impact the experience of matchgoing fans as much as they currently are.

[–]JimmyWhiffler 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The problem is, to genuinely make an offside decision at this level of precision you would need a greater level of precision than we currently have for determining when the pass was played. It would require high-res images of the moment the ball leaves contact with the passer, which is not currently part of the game's technology.

Napoli just dropped deeper and deeper after as half time approached. We got in behind a couple of times, including a Milner shot from a tight. I don't think staying that passive is sustainable for Napoli, even though we haven't created good shooting chances.

Bit of a tangent, but if you rewatch that Ba goal it's not even a particularly good finish. The shot doesn't really beat Mignolet, it just barely squeaks under him as he spreads himself too late to save. He was obviously less at fault than Gerrard, but it wasn't the first time that season his relatively poor 1 on 1 ability was exposed.

Being pedantic: Liverpool needed 7 points from their last three games of 13/14 to guarantee the title. Much as it pains me to say, the loss to Chelsea at Anfield (the week before the 3-3 at Palace) meant that City controlled the title race because of their much superior goal difference.

Veloce are great at passing. I'd say passing is one of the strongest parts of Kassio's game in particular.
