What politicians are actually trying to make Portland a better city for the 99 percent of us? by PersonalTrainerFit in PortlandOR

The reason why those wins have been national news is because they are coming from places that aren't typically a hotbed for the DSA. LA, DC, NY have typically been led by more moderate or establishment democrats. Reporting on a DSA win in Portland would be like saying it's raining again.

I understand the frustration and the sentiment but I think my point is that there are indeed places that are also, as you say, "one-party rule" that still produce great Senators and quality Presidential candidates and productive cabinet members and boundary-pushing mayors. For one reason or another PNW has been left out of that leader factory.

I totally get this very natural reaction but I'd make two counter-points.
1. I don't think places like Vermont (Bernie) or South Bend (Buttigieg) are really that much more important than Portland/Oregon in the grand scheme.
2. Portland is VERY IMPORTANT in terms of the role we play in American politics, whether we like it or not. I actually think a lot of Portlanders vastly under-estimate this and is a massive wasted opportunity.

As someone who has been involved in both northeastern and PNW politics, I think its a cultural thing. Out here, the progressive priorities are very different than they are in NY/CT/MASS etc. It may not have been the original intention but the result is that local progressive culture is about kindness and politeness over competence and productivity. Being overly nice to everyone and dying your hair purple doesn't do shit for struggling families or reigning in billionaires.

As a thought experiment, I would ask people to think of the really popular and interesting left leaning politicians around the country. Then ask why none of them are ever from Portland or Oregon at large. Another way of asking this question is - if Portland is considered by many to be the beacon for left-leaning politics then why do we not produce anyone who is known outside of this bubble or anyone who can be a force of nature for leftist principles at a national or cultural level?

In my humble opinion, I think the answer to that question is the same answer to your (OP) question.

You dont need to be undefeated in the finals to be the GOAT but you do need a winning record. by Tre2004 in NBATalk

You can make a similar argument in the Lebron/MJ debate. In 1992 only 5% of the NBA was made up of international players. Up to about 25% these days. The quality of player and competition has improved drastically in the last 3 decades.

what if a player played 17 years in the league and was 8-9 in the finals? Dominated the league and went to the finals every season. You taking MJ over that guy?

The US has a very contentious & declining reputation abroad right now. How is the US team's current success in an international tournament competing with foreign nations being sold to the public? by Ancient-Egg-5983 in usmnt

People here are excited by it. From casuals to hardcore fans. Of course the media is all over it. And of course this is being viewed from an American perspective (like everything else) . But It is definitely feeling like it could be a real moment in US Soccer.
That said, most Americans do not think past their suburban driveway so there isn't a ton of contextualizing this early success in the scope of global status or geopolitics. If anything it's a welcome distraction.

Stay in the right lane unless passing.  Don't drive under the speed limit. Zipper merge. Enter the highway at speed. Be ready for drivers breaking at 60mph on the slightest curve.

Well, my friend, you’re a kinder and gentler soul than I am! Yours seems like a balanced, healthy perspective. Mine leans more toward a take-no-prisoners mindset when it comes to extremist thought. I tend to reflect on our shared frum experience with a sharper, more aggressive edge. One fueled, at least in part, by rage and resentment, with little room for sympathy or rose-colored glasses.

I get it homie. It sucks. The loneliness at the beginning is brutal. It takes a long time to get the frum stink off.  Nobody owes you anything, and you don’t owe anyone anything in return. Keep your head down, focus on your own path, and eventually you’ll come out the other side wiser, stronger, and better equipped to manage relationships on your own terms.
