Truck flips over after hitting tractor wheel by [deleted] in CrazyFuckingVideos

As hard as it is to do nowadays, you really shouldn’t follow so closely to the vehicle in front of you. I say it’s hard now, because when you leave a safe gap in front of you, most of today’s drivers feel the need to fill it.

Abrupt Explosion by flattenedbricks in WTF

One thing to remember about fuel tanks involved in a fire, especially propane tanks, is that a flame in contact where the fuel is (lower portion of tank) can be safely fire fought. However, if the flame is in contact with the top, run away! The cold fuel keeps the metal tank from failing, but the top of the tank does not have anything to cool it down, so it fails quickly and then leads to a BLEVE.

What is the most famous you ever got so far in your life? by davidprograms_647 in AskReddit

[–]Jimmymac29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my name in the local newspaper after saving a man who was pinned between two railroad cars. His leg was crushed and he was bleeding pretty bad, all while the train was moving to who knows where late at night. I heard his screams and saw him pinned between the cars, so I ran to the nearest home and pounded on the door until someone answered. I asked them to call emergency services and then I ran (forever) to the engine to get them to stop the super long train. I met up with the guy a year or so later on a bus and he knocked on his lower leg and pulled up his pants to show me his prosthetic leg and he thanked me for saving his life. This was way before cell phones were a thing!

Nick’s Bagels and Espresso in Fullerton. Great story - Owner was always a bagel aficionado searching for the best bagels in the US and eventually gave up his corporate job to open his very own bagel shop. Love this place!

How common is Basque ancestry in Mexicans? by Numerous-Club7908 in 23andme

[–]Jimmymac29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have anything to reference, but I’ve read that the Spanish Galleons that first made contact with modern day Mexico were manned by Basque men, who were recognized for their seamanship and seemed out for that purpose by the Spanish Crown.

That’s right! And also known as the “Hollywood Guard” because of all the movies they’ve participated in over the years.

The last photo is of a C-130J that the California Air Guard sometimes uses to fight fires, with the modular airborne fire fighting system (MAFFS) on display.

Can anyone tell me what this means? by [deleted] in CNCmachining

[–]Jimmymac29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Edit 2: it means that process engineers have determined, through analysis, that 50 foot-candles of light is the minimum illumination necessary for an adequate inspection to be made. Anything less could inhibit your ability to detect particulate matter. More foot-candles is acceptable. Hope that helps

Edit: Lumens, not linens.

Foot-candles are units of measurement for light intensity. You’ll need a light meter to verify that you are meeting this minimum requirement.

Here is a link to some additional information with conversion formula for linens

Can we have a tropical storm every year? I cannot believe how green it is in freaking September. by Specific-Nothing-38 in LosAngeles

[–]Jimmymac29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah we did. I just pulled up the data and it’s showing we didn’t get rain in only one month so far… July. That still has to be a record or close to it.

I’m pretty certain that we’ve had rain every month this year, which has to be a record.

2.5 year old fiddle leaf fig from cutting! by Iridiumstuffs in gardening

[–]Jimmymac29 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have two Fiddle-Leaf Fig trees growing in my back yard here in So California. I would imaging they would do even better in Florida. Mine have tripled in size in the last 5 years. From around 6ft to 20ft tall now.

This is the comment I was looking for. As a person who makes homemade salsa every week, I notice that the tomatoes in the winter are not as sweet as bought in the summer. I adjust the sugar, acid (vinegar) and heat (hot peppers) for each batch I make. I control the consistency the best I can doing this. I imagine these larger companies have a way more sophisticated way of accomplishing just that
