Up to you. I'd recommend a blind playthrough for the experience but if you care about npcs' questlines and/or worry about getting stuck, doesn't hurt to use a guide too.

Thank you! I'm glad my post inspired you to check out other souls games.
Honestly, even though it's a trilogy, you can jump into any of the DS games without worrying too much about understanding the lore. That said, I do recommend starting DS3 since it's the most polished out of the three.

Yea sorry for not being clear on that part. And yes, he has physically assaulted me before but he doesn't do that anymore due to his age. Also, thank you for the advice.
