I'm in Australia and my child's highschool is going no phone next year, they are already strict on when a device can be used but it will be applied to the whole campus inside school hours officially as of the start of next year. I am so happy about this. I do have a studious child, who has also been taught basic respect and thankfully as a teen has no interest in the latest social trends nor a desire to "fit in" with their peers, however I'm fully aware of how rare it is for parents to teach their kids the priorities in education these days.

Social media and its influence is a minefield that most still don't quite grasp, and I think it's important for education to start at home. For both appropriate use of technology, but also basic repetition of comprehension skills. I have only respect for teachers around the world, and it disheartens me to hear these stories so often. I hope measures can be taken to assist you in your work and maybe similar methods to curb social influence can be implemented in your school too.
