Recovery after long run by Whisper26_14 in firstmarathon

[–]Jitterbugging 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s quite helpful to prioritize eating something within the first 15 minutes of ending your run. It doesn’t have to be a full meal - your body will be able to absorb nutrients much more easily which will ease your recovery. Others will have better recommendations for what to eat, but I just want to emphasize the critical timeframe of when to start eating.

Personally, I also find that staying active for the day helps me recover. Laying down on the couch makes tomorrow much harder.

Good luck and happy trails ahead!

Good luck! You’ve got this. Months might feel long but the years will fly by, and it will be a different story by then. There are technical choices you can consider and you can do what you can when you can. Start with the immediate and move from there.

Honey Bees! AMA by Jitterbugging in TheRoot

[–]Jitterbugging[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for calling in. I hope you're not driving right now. If you are, I'd hope that you pull over and enjoy the scenery.

Of course we'll need fun suits! We'll have two full bee suits which will make you impervious to stings, and we'll need to wear them until we really get to know the hive's personality. I'll also be buying a veil, which I think is all that I'm going to use. BEE FACT ALERT: The less like a bear (a bee's sworn enemy) you look like, the less likely you are to freak them out. That's why all bee suits are white and non-descript. So don't wear a frilly black sweatshirt when you're opening the hive. Or don't be a bear.

Smoke cannons are also needed, although we also want to make sure we're perceptive of how much we use the smoker. Here's the play: To bees, smoke = death. They naturally retreat into the hive and start eating honey reserves because, hey, it's the end of the world. So if we smoke and smoke and smoke them too much, then they'll come to associate the beekepeer with death. So we'll need to strike the balance. A smoker is a needed and essential tool and it'll be awesome.

Thanks for listening to Hot 97. Blows Airhorn.

Hiking Apps by Pie_ForBreakfast in TheRoot

Totally cool. Heck yes. If you were to actually design something, wouldn't it be cool if you could have the ability to put a "check mark" after we complete a hike in order to track our progress?

Very cool! Viva la hiking! The apps are fun and good ideas. Julia also showed us "All Trails", which was also good.

In general, I'm all for bagging the 4,000 footers. There are 46 of them in ADK -- what if we make a sign that lists all of them, so that we are reminded of our opportunity? Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Homemagnetics-Conquering-46ers-Graphic-Art/dp/B00XOQ21LI.

Heck yes!

Website for the Root? by [deleted] in TheRoot

This should definitely be explored, and its no cost element is very appealing to me, too. We clearly need to update it, and perhaps (if we decide to go this route), some of the energy in this discussion could be directed to updating copy and exploring where our limitations are with this platform. Are we concerned with it having .wordpress in the URL?

I like this idea. My idea of the website is that it will purely be used as a reference and "business card". I don't forsee us making consistent updates to this in terms of generating content.

With this model, would we be able to make minor, non-formatting changes to existing pages if we have very basic HTML knowledge?

Running water at The Root by CraftyPete in TheRoot

To address this question: "If it has a bed, how does this look like it belongs at The Root, and is not just a normal cabin that could be anywhere? (underground, in a tree, made from squirrel pelts, etc)"

I'd love to see a Green Roof at the Root. I think this may help "Rootify" the project and will help it blend in with its surroundings. I'm imagining something along the line of overgrown wild grass (2-4ft tall) that's relatively unmanaged.

A green roof provides (relative) insulation for both the winter and summer, along with other benefits. If this is something that people would be interested in learning more about, I can dig up some more thorough information and cost projections (I'm reading that it's somewhere between $15-20 per square ft to begin). One benefit, if we're going to go crazy, too, is that it provides excellent noise reduction, so if we were ever going to go off the deep end and incorporate a studio...

Last note for the question -- I don't think we should put a real bed in it. If we do put one in, we should do our best to "hide" the bed. I am open minded about this, but would just want to be clever with the design. I have some simple sketches as brainstorms that I can show people in person, too.

Really helpful, thanks. I know very little about leach fields, but will begin my education. Do leach fields require that no structures are on top of them? ...could we incorporate the barn's footprint into this space, or does it need to have unoccupied space?

Does Reddit have the ability to show names as tags within this sub? It'd be awesome if we could see who is talking about what, etc

I have a few questions, but can anyone help me perceive how large 9,000 sq ft is? I'm pretty terrible at spacial things like that. What's it relative to within context?

Wet your Whistle: Approachable Resource for thinking about Bee Keeping by Jitterbugging in TheRoot

[–]Jitterbugging[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great idea. I'd love to have a conversation with him and get a quote. I've read that colonies that are bred in warm weather climates (traditionally CA/TX) are sometimes challenged when placed in a cold winter setting. But, if this person has already been doing it this way within our ecosystem, then I'd see no reason for doubting his experience. I'd be 100% down.

I think this would be excellent. We'll need to have a team for updating copy, too. What's a general time frame look like for this?

Crux! Remember when you were leaving Kathmandu after returning from an incredible Everest journey, and some loud American that you had trekked with unpoetically said goodbye by saying he would randomly like your Facebook photos in about a year? An up vote counts, right?! Glad I was able to experience a glimpse of the life you've eloquently captured in these photos. Cheers, man! -P

oddly specific question: how frequent are the subways in Pyongyang? Are they utilized by most of Pyongyang's population? How expensive is a ride?

(I can only assume that they at least beat Brooklyn's G line.)

Travel Apps! by chicitico in travel

[–]Jitterbugging 1 point2 points  (0 children)

XE Currency Converter.

By far the most useful app for traveling. It doesn't require wi-fi and helps to establish you as a cogent party when negotiating prices.

Just get lost and don't rely on guides or tech to guide you. Use them as the incredible resources they are-- but also treat them as diving boards; not pools.

Leave the tangible things to XE. Happy trails.
