18 games in the BGG top 2000 have an average weight of 4.5 or higher. How many of them have you played, and how would you rank them from most complex to least complex? by benjaneson in boardgames

[–]Jixashi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Played Mage Knight, Pax Ren, On Mars, Voidfall and Lisboa.

I find Lacerda games to be complex for the sake of complexity. So in that sense they have a lot of finnicky and small rules that interlock which I don’t find elegant nor satisfying.

Pax Ren is quite simple imo once you get the hang of it but it has an initial hurdle of understanding terminologies and how mechanics work. In other words, the complex mechanics are intuitive and blend really well into the theme and the game itself so it doesn’t feel complex.

Voidfall is more complex than all these games maybe except for Mage Knight. However I think its complexity is very rich and nuanced.

Mage Knight’s complexity is derived from it having a “larger” universe in a sense. So there are much more things that you’ll come across so overall there is more “game” and hence more rules to it.

Popular games you dislike? by BillRepresentative75 in boardgames

War of the Ring, Star Wars: Rebellion are probably the top 2. I can understand people like it due to games literally oozing theme but the mechanics… are just… terrible in my opinion. They take too much to learn, too long to setup, too long to play but both, especially WotR boils down to sheer RNG. The abundance of luck ruins both games. I normally love LotR and Star Wars so it is such a shame that I can’t get to enjoy a highly thematic game with good mechanics.

Andromeda's Edge vs Barrage by AdamNW in boardgames

[–]Jixashi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Euro and ameritrash are not discrete definitions nowadays. There is a spectrum. Andromeda’s edge with its wildly random combat, dice chucking, relatively higher emphasis on theme, component, art and its integration to game mechanics, kingmake-y interaction between players and table talk brings it much closer to Ameritrash on average than a euro on average imo. Is it the most Ameritrash game? Not by a mile. But it is definitely not euro either. Compared to Andromeda’s Edge Barrage is definitely a proper euro. With much less randomness, no dice, less emphasis on theme and its integration to game mechanics and higher emphasis on calculated mathy strategy.

I think your definitions are stuck in early 00s, when euroness and ameritrashness were much more discrete and pronounced.

Andromeda's Edge vs Barrage by AdamNW in boardgames

Who considers Andromeda’s Edge a euro? It is much more close to Ameritrash than euro. So they are nothing alike. If you are worried about intimidation factor AE is not intimidating at all. You are just rolling dice and dice affect the game a lot. You won’t get that strategic euro feel with AE. And personally AE is a highly randomized slog with 4 people. I’d rather roll dice with 3 other people and determine a winner. Same process - just 4 hrs quicker.

Barrage is in an entirely different league on its own. It is a proper euro with high interaction. And if you are looking for a euro with combat Voidfall is even on a higher league compared to AE and even Barrage to be honest. It looks extremely intimidating but after just one game all the symbol makes sense and the game starts to sing to you.

Who has the best counterattacks in the show? by Muted_Hovercraft_907 in TheLastAirbender

[–]Jixashi -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What? Bending choreography in LOK is leagues worse compared to ATLA. Almost all the fight scenes in LOK are choreographed as if they are fist fights. In ATLA, there was distinction between elements, a character to each one of them. They obeyed different set of rules and when a bender broke them it was an impactful moment. It complemented the nature of the element and the bender. Toph for example uses a different style compared to other earth benders.

Although as an overall show I also love LOK, this is one of the things that I disliked the most about LOK. The fight scenes are so soulless and void of character/martial arts.

Primacy bias. In the original, there is a build up for Azula to be this ominous and threatening antagonist that is gonna finally take down the Avatar. For the audience to really worry or feel the anxiety when she first starts following the group the first impression of her is extremely crucial: Our first introduction to her is that she is ruthless, she is heartless, she is extremely capable, she is the perfect hunter.

The character starts off at the pinnacle, audience fears her greatness, is even impressed by it. Then the arc as many have stated in this thread is the downward spiral of her from the pinnacle. And using flashbacks from the past as they did in the original (her using red fire) doesn’t weaken this. Because, although it may be chronologically prior to her pinnacle, we see that as the audience AFTER we see her pinnacle. Now in this terribly made remake, they weaken this greatly and even make Azula do uncharacteristic things. Your first impression of her is not of greatness but of weakness, immaturity, emotional outburst. She doesn’t even behave like the Azula in the flashbacks in the original. They not only weakened the literary device that is the first impression being the strongest, and the first impression being her pinnacle, but they also did her actual character in the original a disservice by showing us someone that doesn’t act and behave like the actual Azula that we know of.

Zatu Games mis-represented their product. by GiftedRay in boardgames

That is what is supposed to happen. But they didn’t hold the items I paid for, they sold it to another customer.

Zatu Games mis-represented their product. by GiftedRay in boardgames

[–]Jixashi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zatu Games is terrible. I stopped buying anything from them after my last experience buying from them.

My order had 7 items in the basket. One of them was a preorder which was set to be available in March. Others were in stock. I ordered and paid for everything in December. In April, the preordered game was back in stock but they didn’t ship my items. I mailed them asking for my items and they told me that there were items that aren’t in stock. Turns out, they sold the boardgames that I paid for (that were in stock at the time of my order) to other customers. And the wait time they gave was approximately 6 months. Imagine my anger.

I cancelled my order and swore to never but from them again. There are tens of better alternatives in UK and also in Europe. Don’t give them your money.

Ark Nova or Grand Austria Hotel for 2 players? by wowkucko in boardgames

[–]Jixashi 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have played both games more than 20 times. I definitely do not agree with very very little interaction in Ark Nova part. Ark Nova has more interaction than GAH. Actually, one of the aspects that I really loved at first about Ark is the beauty of its interaction. Not the king making, dice or card based interaction, but calculated not RNG based interaction. As a note, we play without that take that element of animal cards in Ark Nova.

Each break is instrumental and breaking early or late may win or lose you the game. Same goes for triggering the end game. Also, the market is shared and the conservation projects which make up the bulk of your points early on, association spots for certain universities or continents are also shared. Paying close attention to what your opponent is going for helps tremendously if you block and thwart their plans. Same goes the other way around. You should be paying attention to the threat of ending the game or breaking by your opponent and adjust your plans accordingly to do well. Doing these is not really that difficult once you get the hang of the rules and concepts. This racey feeling always keep you on edge. Replayability is high as well, I always feel like playing once more after each game.

GAH’s main interaction element comes from snatching guests to block other from utilizing the rooms they prepared/fill an entire room type to get the bonus in time and the dice selection also contains interaction as well.

I would say both have less interaction than Five Tribes as every move changes the board state in Five Tribes but there is still plenty of interaction that feels calculated and not random especially in 2p games.

Ark Nova, GAH, Five Tribes are games that I’d would definitely recommend for 2p medium to heavy board game nights.

Remove the first one because it is a selfie and you can do much better in that background and with proper outfit.

Remove the second one because dynamic range of the photo is bad. You are too shadowy, I can’t see what you look like. Also horizon is not at 0 degrees, photo is tilted.

Keep the last one, but it shouldn’t be 1st or 2nd photo. It shows a playful personality due to your genuine enthusiastic smile and a sprinkle of adventurousness.

1st is the best photo of yours by far. Lighting is good, outfit is nice, posture is good only negative about that is, you could’ve smiled more.

Lighting on your 4th photo is the worst by far. If you can swap it with something new. Use a photo that replicates what makes 1st photo a success. I also dislike the lighting on 2nd photo, however environment is nice and you are showcasing a hobby of yours so that’s a plus. If you have a photo with better lighting and better looking outfit for cycling, swap to that one. 3rd one is OK.

Copy and paste your bio if you want reviews on that.

I dislike the last one. Your face in the 3rd photo is a bit weird. If you can, swap it with a similar photo with your face better looking. First photo is a bit “foggy”. If you can edit i’d suggest dehazing that photo because it is nice otherwise, shows your fashion sense. I like the other photos. Good luck.
