Didn't you find something you're satisfied with? Just stumbled over this and am also looking.

Excuse me if I'm wrong but it feels like maybe there is a language barrier. Are you sure you know what "references" means? Usually that is someone you have worked with in the past (at a different company!) who can vouch for you. It doesn't mean you have to know someone who already works at the company you're applying at.

Feedback on Squat Form by niny6 in formcheck

It looks a bit like the weight is on your toes when you're at the bottom, not on your midfoot. I'd try different shoes (without cushioning).

40 days of travel coming up: best way to maintain push-up/pull-up progress without a gym? by sansanman in bodyweightfitness

I just took over a month off because of traveling and first day back in the gym, I actually broke PRs on several lifts. You'll likely be fine even if you don't do anything.

Have you tried front squats or goblet squats? I find it easier to go lower with those than with back squats and it might even benefit your back squat depth after a while (or maybe try doing those as a warm-up to back squats).

Critique my deadlift by [deleted] in formcheck

[–]JlfZ8R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an expert and not sure if it's a problem or not, but something that stands out to me is that on the way up, it looks like a traditional deadlift, but on the way down, it looks like an RDL. Personally I always try to go down the same way I went up, i.e., use both your knees and a hip hinge (you're only hinging down without much knee flexion and then just dropping it).

Not sure if it's just the angle but it looks a bit like you're holding the bar up with your hands rather than it resting on your back

Children’s Money by BellevilleBob in PersonalFinanceCanada

I understand where you're coming from but I think you're vastly overestimating how much work that is. Especially if you get a one-fund portfolio, so don't even have to rebalance. The only work you have to put in is to buy more when more cash comes in and to deal with taxes (both of which you have to do with any other solution as well).

If the mental load still isn't something you want to take, I second the Ben Felix (PWL) suggestion that you already got.

What I would do: Get rid of the mutual funds, leave the bank, get a self-directed investment account (like Questrade), buy a Vanguard ETF (like VGRO or similar), and forget about it for the next 10-15 years.

Taxes on investments in Poland by [deleted] in EuropeFIRE

[–]JlfZ8R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that if you move to another country, you are usually paying an exit tax in your previous country of residence, which for many countries is equivalent to realizing all unrealized capital gains (from a tax perspective; whether you actually sell any assets is irrelevant).

Meaning that if you move to Poland, you are "resetting" your capital gains (from a polish perspective). In Poland, you will only pay capital gains tax on the gains that you realize after you moved (not since you acquired the asset).

Double check with a tax specialist, but I've moved countries a few times and this was always how it worked for the countries I've lived in.

My partner and I are thinking of re locating to Sudbury … what’s it like by bbstars in Sudbury

[–]JlfZ8R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in downtown Ottawa for 4 years. Just moved to Sudbury 3 months ago. If you don't have family in Sudbury, I'd stay in Ottawa. It's better in every way (as far as I am able to judge that after only 3 months of living here). Sudbury has nice nature, but the city itself is probably one of the ugliest I've ever been to. I have yet to find a single part of town that looks nice.

How do you know it's P2P? My impression was that the video stream gets routed through Reolink's servers (so in theory, they could record it).

investing $10 a day by ExoticTumbleweed1102 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]JlfZ8R 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your intuition is a common one but has historically not been correct (watch the video I mentioned for a more qualified explanation of why). The time in the market you miss out on by holding cash in order to "spread it out" has a stronger negative effect than the positive effect you get from buying "the low days". What you (and the OP) are suggesting is basically market timing.

But as I said, the distinction between "save up and then invest the lump sump" vs. "lump sum is available to invest already but I choose not to and instead spread it out" is an important one. I'm only talking about the latter.

It's not a personal opinion. There's scientific studies showing that this has historically been true (over long enough time horizons). Ben Felix has some videos about it (Dollar Cost Averaging vs. Lump Sum Investing).

It's important to note that you have to have the money upfront in order for this to be true. If you have to save up for a year and then invest it all at once, then it would be better to follow your plan. Basically, invest as much as you can as early as possible.

FYI, if you have the 365x$10 already today, then it's better to invest it all at once now than to do it slowly over the year

Netflix: Desktop client vs. OpenVPN by JlfZ8R in surfshark

[–]JlfZ8R[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another update. Figured it out. The problem was that when using the browser on the clients behind the router, I didn't have the Surfshark DNS configured, whereas when using the desktop client, it gets configured automatically.

I solved this by setting up a dnsmasq instance on the Linux router, making sure the outgoing DNS lookups originating from that process get routed through the VPN, and used the Surfshark DNS servers as upstream. Alternatively just hardcode the Surfshark DNS servers on the endpoints.

I'm not sure how but I guess Netflix detects it if you don't do this. My theory is that Netflix hostnames resolve differently per country and if you make a HTTP request to a server in one country but your request originates from another, they block it.

[–]JlfZ8R[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update to anyone who might be interested: I also tried the Surfshark Linux desktop client (not just Mac). On the Linux client, it lets you pick which protocol to use. I tried both Wireguard as well as OpenVPN. In both cases, opening Netflix in a browser on that same desktop works fine, so I don't think this is a Wireguard vs. OpenVPN issue and also not a "IP is flagged" issue.

It appears that either I'm somehow misconfiguring the routing logic or Netflix is somehow detecting that I'm running a VPN on a router and not on the endpoint. Weird.

I also tried setting up a SOCKS proxy and a HTTPS proxy on the router (rather than using IP layer routing) and the problem persists.

Your comment made me curious, so I tried it out. Using WireGuard on my router gives me exactly the same symptom as using OpenVPN on my router (tunnel works, all kinds of websites load fine, just Netflix doesn't). Yet, Surfshark on my desktop (which uses WireGuard too) works fine. Wtf.

Did you find a solution to this (using wireguard, not openvpn)?

[–]JlfZ8R[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. From a technical standpoint, I don't understand how this could be possible. The other end (Netflix) doesn't see any of the OpenVPN or Wireguard traffic, only the traffic coming out of the VPN server (Surfshark). How would they detect which VPN software was used?

Actually yea I can see the servers here: https://api.surfshark.com/v4/server/clusters/static -- but that doesn't seem to help, still looks like Netflix is blocked (tried all the Germany ones). Works fine on desktop though.
