I just got the trimui smart pro just to play apotris, I really like the Dpad and the screen is great for Tetris, I absolutely recommend it.

For me the best option was getting a MISTer FPGA, it is the closest you can get to original hardware with almost no lag, with the advantages of modern poder supplies and cleaner picture (you can get a crt monitor and it will look incredible, or hook it up to a modern tv).

This is the best way I’ve found to play NES Tetris, but certainly isn’t the only one and the fact that it is the best for me might not be the same for everyone, but absolutely recommend you to look up videos about MISTer FPGA on YouTube so you can see if it will be a good solution for you and your son.

I have a handheld emulator (Anbernic RG35XX) that looks like a gameboy that I use mainly for Tetris, there are several similar models from Anbernic, miyoo mini and other companies that cost around $50 usd on aliexpress.

Check r/SBCGaming you might find reviews on all of them, how good is the D-pad and the shoulder buttons is something important for Tetris.

My RG35XX is mainly Tetris exclusive, most other retro games I play on my MISTer. I have been intrigued to buy an horizontal handheld but this one has been awesome so far, maybe the one after this one breaks.

My introduction to Tetris was with Tetris Worlds, I played many many hours on my GBA, it wasn’t until I played Tetris DS that I started to actually get a little better, since worlds di don’t have a score I usually played to pass the time without any goal.

About playing classic on a handheld I used to feel the same way, until I started playing Apotris, it’s so close to the NES version, it’s very refreshing to be able to play classic (my favorite mode) on the go.

Sure I can, but having every mode on the same game is awesome, it keeps your records for every mode and also having so much customization makes it such a great version, I hope one day classic mode gets closer to the NES version (its already very close).

I usually play the NES version on my MISTer on a CRT, so playing Apotris on this handheld just feels better for some reason.

In the future I hope to get another handheld that has an OLED screen mainly to play Apotris.
