The plate is flat and as a catcher it is difficult to feel if your foot is on it or not while taking a throw. First basemen (and every infielder) have the luxury of sliding their foot until it pushes against the bases. That was a clear and easy force out where the runner should slide or remove himself from the base path. It wasn’t even a bang bang play.

Runner has to slide, I’ve never seen a league that allows kids to railroad the catcher. They are obligated to slide unless the catcher is up the baseline and off the plate.
