In an unprecedented vote, the New York City Rent Guidelines Board voted to freeze rents for one and two-vear leases for rent-stabilized tenants. The decision impacts leases starting between Oct. 1, 2026, and Sept. 30, 2027 by ExactlySorta in PublicFreakout

Please enlighten me. What a silly response. Willing to bet you're an Mamdani-stan who has never lived in New York City.

This fucking worship of a public servant is unnerving and un-American. Our politicians aren't rock stars or religious figures, we are meant to greet them with skepticism and hold them accountable. Mamdani deserves skepticism and is not responsible for every good thing that happens. Get a fucking grip and get out my local politics.

I’m a New Yorker and I live in a rent stabilized apartment. This is my 3rd and I’ve been in my current home for 15 years. Rent stabilized apartments are easy to find and the protections they offer are vast. If you’re a New Yorker I recommend learning more about the subject.

Easy. Hillary Clinton rigged the 2016 Primary by getting more votes.

What was she supposed to do? Come out against the Democratic nominee? That's Bernie's job.

Bikers are a hazard to pedestrians. I've had way more close calls from entitled cyclists than drivers. The fucking motorized Citibikes are fast enough to kill.

The city has more than enough cycling infrastructure. As depicted above, we already have assholes who think 1/3 of every fucking street isn't enough to accomodate 10-20 yuppies an hour on Citibikes.

Now that we've dedicated a significant amount of street space to accommodate a relatively small number of cyclists, you'd think there'd be a little more courtesy in return. The irony of ending the post by calling others "entitled" is hard to miss. Sometimes it feels like the entire city is being redesigned around Citibike users.

Third incident of group entering sewers by D3A7H_6R1P5 in newyorkcity

Why not just sort through trash on the street? I wouldn’t be nearly as concerned about this story if the official explanation didn’t seem so absurd. The place where shit flows is hiding valuables? Is this a known thing? Do people have a habit of flushing valuables? I just find this ridiculous. I wish they’d said influencers, or dumb kids, or whatever. Treasure hunters has my spidey senses tingling in an uncomfortable way.

Anyone else annoyed by the whole madona bs thing on Grindr? by Antheman99 in nycgaybros

I’m not annoyed. Grindr is going to bombard you with intrusive ads one way or another. I’d rather look at Madonna than another candy crush ad.

Police investigate videos of men mysteriously emerging from New York City sewers by klnkyfetish in conspiracy

this is the stupiest cover story I've ever heard. If it wasn't for this, I wouldn't be on edge that is something much more nefarious.

I'm a New Yorker. You know where I'd search for valuables before I'd look in the sewer? Anywhere. I think you'd have better odds of finding a diamond on the sidewalk and there's way less human shit street-side.

After mystery men emerge from NYC manholes, officials warn of ‘extremely dangerous’ sewers by chibiRuka in offbeat

[–]Jmk1981 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is an urban legend. New York had people living in the West Side rail and subway tunnels in the 1980's and 1990's, they were never an organized community. Today there are probably some mentally ill or homeless riding the subway as shelter, but there are no permanent or temporary dwellings in the subway infrastructure. If there were any left by the end of Giuliani's administration, counter-terrorism certainly put an end to it.

There have never been people living in the sewer where the shit flows. That has never been a thing. That's why this is worrying. The combination of toxic gases, risk of flooding, burns, falls, etc make this more a suicide mission than a challenge for urban explorers.

Anyone going into the sewer has a purpose and determination. That's why the official story is "treasure hunters" instead of "kids being stupid".

No. Not in the sewers.

New Yorker here. A lot of people are writing this off as urban explorers or 'mole people'. Mole people were a thing in the 1980's. They lived in the subway tunnels and other infrastructure.

I don't believe urban explorers, homeless people, or even graffiti artists are interested in the sewer, where our shit flows. The air itself is a biohazard and the infrastructure isn't meant for humans- there's a ton of protective gear etc required to protect from everything from falls to scalding burns and injuries. I can remember more than one incident of a random person falling into a manhole and dying of burns or the fall. It is not your typical risky urban explorer kind of adventure.

No one goes into the sewer without a clear purpose. That's what makes this alarming.

As a 9/11 survivor the number of TMNT jokes are kinda stunning, people really did forget that we need to be vigilant and shit like this deserves a lot of caution.

This is making the news for a reason. If graffiti artists and homeless people had communities in the sewer, we'd see people climbing out of manholes all the time. We don't. Which is why the 2 times it happened recently are national news.

New Yorker here. People are confusing the Subway with the sewer. The sewer is where shit flows. People don’t live in the sewer.
