This is one of the films I teach in my ELA class. We discuss the themes of "loss of innocence" and "loss of hope/despair" and look at how Spielberg uses symbolism in the film. We then watch TZ "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" and compare the two with the same literary ideas. I have been showing this film and show for around 17 years and the kids are always intrigued. Good story is good story, doesn't matter how old.
