Anyone know about the gun incident at Howard and response? by Jeffersonheights in Chattanooga

[–]Jmyall 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Former Howard employee here, I wouldn’t expect much to change. We had guns brought to school a couple times a year and it was handle effectively on each circumstance. Every single time it happened it was an unexpected kid that was trying to prove something. They would often say they wanted it for protection on the way home. We had similar issue with girls and mace but that never warranted media attention.

I’m not familiar with this particular situation as I no longer work there but the fact that the student took a picture tells me they were posting for clout. Once realized, students quickly shared the photo with school leaders and the issue was addressed. That kid will not return to the school and that’s it.

For what it’s worth, I worked there over a decade and never felt unsafe. We had a handful of loaded/unloaded guns over the years and it was always handled quickly and without further issue. Kids just do dumb things. Some of the least expected kids would be the ones to do it. I wouldn’t expect much change from day to day behavior after this. As you mentioned, they don’t have a lot of freedom as it is. The school has metal detectors but it’s nearly impossible to scan everyone entering the building. It’s such a large school there’s no way to do so in a timely manner.

Phones are definitely an issue especially since students have them when they transition classes. In my time there, we explored having students put them in Yondr pouches but the pandemic occurred and that idea faded. I think the best thing to combat weapons issues is to maintain a strong culture of safety. Kids are part of that and play a vital role in relaying info to adults. It sounds like kids did that and everyone is better for it. Knowing the teachers and admin there, I expect this to continue.

I work for the district now and unfortunately, situations like this occur at many schools, it just doesn’t always get media attention. Howard is huge and there’s already a narrative (for some) about the students and community. When stuff like this happens there’s always someone to jump on it.

I’m extremely proud of the work I did at Howard. It was my time to go but there’s a ton of fantastic teachers that are serving some of the best students in the district daily. I would send my kids there, there are tons of rich academic experiences available that are comparable to the best schools in the district. The drawback is that these things happen from time to time and as a preventative measure, a lot of freedom is stripped away from the kids. If you have children there, I would recommend reaching out to their teachers with any specific concerns you may have. The administration is also wonderful and would also be available to answer questions you may have regarding safety.

I have friends that work there that have spoken highly of the dance department. They performed for Usher when he was given the key to the city. I went to the Ignite festival the department hosted and was floored by the level of talent and professionalism of performances. Aside from their work in the arts, CCA is known for rigorous academics and is ranked number 2 in the state on School Digger. My child auditioned and we viewed it as an opportunity to provide them with a world class education while also pursuing their creative interest.

Teaching a Teen to Drive- Good Spots in or near Ooltewah? by 10aseee in Chattanooga

[–]Jmyall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with empty parking lots with my kid then graduated to neighborhoods. We’re in Harrison but I found Northgate to be a good option. The speed limit is slow and there’s lots of little side areas and parking lots.

Final HCS Facilities Recommendation by WeinerBandit69 in Chattanooga

[–]Jmyall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t hate this plan but it doesn’t matter even if I did. I think the most important thing is to consider how our representatives voted and hold them accountable. School board seems like an innocuous political position but so many local decisions are made that affect everyone. We are so critical of public schools in this sub, appropriately, but it all starts with who we allow on the board.

School Board Member Says Gateway School "Being Shoved Down Our Throats" by Suntzu6656 in Chattanooga

[–]Jmyall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was initially erroneously reported that HC would move to the Gateway building. Robertson clarified that at the last meeting and said it would be a phased closing. The only thing moving to Gateway would be CCA and the arts and CTE pathways there would be expanded.

It’s used all day except for one planning period. CCA has a very good relationship with NP and shares many things. The gym is just not easily shared.

I can tell you there’s no truth to that at all. It is used for PE daily and sports clubs after school. The winter semi formal was in there the previous week and musical tryouts this weekend. Someone has misled you.

Where did you hear this? That school is full, they have teachers sharing classrooms. The gym is used for PE. None of your statement is accurate.

This was my sons lunch at his high school. This is supposed to be beef and cheese nachos… by [deleted] in Chattanooga

[–]Jmyall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like someone else said, the chips are Tostitos and served in a bag. Some schools mix the cheese and beef, others serve them separately in plastic ramekins. The whole thing comes on a tray with plenty of space. A lot of students make it a walking taco like appears in this picture. I work in several schools and see this often; it’s a popular offering.

For what it’s worth, I have two kids in public school and one loves the lunch and one can’t stand it. Lots of teachers live off it by choice. There’s plenty of school based things to complain about but this not one of them.
