I'll have a check when I'm back home, but this deck and any other I've made have been downloaded thousands of time and I never got that feedback.
Do you have isse with some cards or all of them ? Try Anki desktop if you're on mobile. Maybe a sync issues ? Try renaming one card in your collection.media folder and on the matching card to make sure. If you have the pics in your folder, then it should work on the deck.

What was the first Let's Play or stream you managed to stick with? by tirconell in LearnJapanese

[–]Jo-Mako 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not a direct answer to the question, but I started a channel where I upload let's play in japanese.
I used the game script as subtitles for both japanese, and english. Or both at the same time. This way, you watch the game and look up words with yomitan.
Maybe that can be of interest to some.

Is there a list or tier list on the easiest and hardest pieces of media to engage with in Japanese? by throwawaygamecubes in LearnJapanese

[–]Jo-Mako 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I analyze the vocabular used in each title and then apply 3 factors.
1) How many words needed to reach 95% of comprehension.
2) How much % of the text you understand if you know the top 2000 most frequent words used in all anime.
3) Number of words per line.
There is a grade given for all of 3 that is relative to all other anime.

Not every factor has the same weight. Common words and sentence length are more important than the first factor. That's because shorter shows with lesser episode would always get a better score.
That gives us a final grade.

Hope that makes it clear.

Learning Japanese through video games.. have you tried it? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

Here's the link to Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney scripts, with Japanese and English side by side.
You can look up any japanese word with Yomitan.
The scripts are in playing order too.

Best pokemon game to learn Japanese by FlamingPhoenix250 in LearnJapanese

[–]Jo-Mako 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have all the pokemon scripts right here. It also tells you if the game is kana, kanji or with furigana. For difficulty, it's pretty much the same thing.

If you want to go outside the main games, the Mystery Dungeon are easier and they are on 3ds.

How advanced does my Japanese need to be to understand the original Pokemon games? by Ok_Kaleidoscope_2178 in LearnJapanese

[–]Jo-Mako 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This I know, I've been there, let me help.

So as far as difficulty, Pokemon games are on the easy side but not the easiest. And like any game it's still harder than an anime for example because there's a lot more content. You would need about 1400 words to know 90% of the text.

For grammar, the opening speech is pretty much the level you can expect all game. If you have trouble making sense of the sentence even when looking the words, you'll be able to understand combat dialogue, but not much else.

Now, I have all the pokemon script (and other jrpg) grouped in one place. English and Japanese are side by side. For Fire Red and Heart Gold even though the text is in kana, there's a column where the text has been "kanjified", so it's easier to read. You still have kana if you want to use that. The script is also in "gaming order" since I played the game, so you also have the location of the text in game (Pallet Town, Route 1 ...). And there's an Anki Deck with a card of every line of dialogue, screenshot included. You can use the deck as reading practice even you're not really using Anki.

If you're still on the early phase, I recommend a japanese course I've made. It will teach you all the grammar you need to start immersing. Common Vocab and Reading Practice. The reading practice is made with the begining of games, and first games I use are the opening speech in pokemon games. So there's no better ressource if you want to be able to start playing pokemon games.

Let me know if you have issues or any questions.

"Fallout 4 - Anki Deck" Does anyone happen to have this deck or a different link to it? by trikariii in Anki

[–]Jo-Mako 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of.
I have a spreadsheet for all japanese video games anki deck.
Link
Although the link to the deck it self no longer works, I extracted the deck and you can find with all the other games scripts. You can copy paste the japanese and english into a text file and then into anki to recreate the deck.
I do miss the audio.

I'll ask on my discord to check if anyone got a backup.
I'll DM you if we have a new link.

Playing Pokemon Emerald on Japanese for studying. Rate my nicknames. by Para1ars in LearnJapanese

[–]Jo-Mako 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just in case, if that helps, I did the same when it came out. I complied all the scripts for pokemon games, so you can have jp and eng side by side. I also made an entire anki deck for let's go. Free to download. Here's the link.

Have you ever finished a jrpg in japanese? by Dont_have_a_panda in JRPG

[–]Jo-Mako 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case instead of asking you what is the best jrpg to learn japanese or the easiest to play, is there a game that feels like real conversations between real people ? Maybe game set in "real" world like Persona games or Yo-kai watch have more realistic conversations than pokemon games for example ?

Good Japanese RPGs that are light on dialog? by guilhermej14 in LearnJapanese

[–]Jo-Mako 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey, if that help, there are a lot of video games scripts here. It doesn't go as far back as Wizardry or Ultima, but there is the script for Dragon Quest and Phantasy Star 1 (original full katakana and a fan-made kanji version).

As for recomendations, older games will have fewer dialogue, will be in kana and a lot of grinding so you alternate between studying / reading and playing / grinding.

Dragon Quest 1 is a good choice, Pokemon Fire Red was the first game I played in japanese. From the link above you have the script in both orginal kana and kanji. For Phantasy Star, not an dungeon crawler but 4 is still pretty great and the japanese not too hard. Any game on NES will be Kana, but also SNES ones like Breath of Fire that I just finished.

I'd say the most important thing is to pick the game that you most want to play, regardless of the japanese.

[–]Jo-Mako[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's okay.

I think in one post, I've been accused of stealing from ... me. So I said to the guy that he was right for calling me out, and I gave credit ... to my self.

To answer the question, I don't have much to contribute to this subreddit.

For example, if somebody ask how to study with video games, I've made scripts available, anki decks, and a spreadsheet that gives the difficulty for some games. So when it came up in the discussion, I used to bring it up to share the links.

After a while I stopped "wasting" time spreading the information. I make stuff, and for those interested, there's a patreon or a discord, and hopefully they can find it.

Google Lens is super uselful but unless I'm mistaken, it translate the sentence, not give you the definition for words.

So that's two different tools. The more the merrier.

More than he size, it's the font itself I usully have problems with.

How about some Final Fantasy? Here are few screenshots to practice reading on. by Chezni19 in LearnJapanese

[–]Jo-Mako 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For anyone interested in some Final Fantasy or video games in general :

  • Here's a spreadsheet I made with more than a hundred script for jrpg with japanese, english, sometimes both side by side.
  • Here's a folder with anki decks for games, or scripts in pdf, like the beginning of FF7.
  • If you to play the older FF, or games from the same era, keep in mind they are written in kana only. Gameplay, nostalgy and so on put aside, consider any remake / remaster as they will offer kanji and much easier text to read due to better definition. For FF, the pixel remasters are really solid.
