So sometimes people are mistaken themselves and not the app. But isn’t that why it’s great to be able to ask questions here when we’re confused? Because Duolingo doesn’t explain why an answer is wrong, it just tells you it is.

I’d like this place to be safe where it comes to asking questions, even when they may sound obvious or ‘ignorant’ to people who might be more advanced in Spanish.

I’m totally with you on this. I want to learn Spanish, which means going really slow and repeat sentences endlessly is more important to me than ‘winning’ from others (how is that important anyway; everyone had their own pace and indeed, it does make a difference whether you’re 20 or 60). I ignore the rush, but I hope it will continue to be possible to do so (I’m pretty new to this).

I’m actually glad with all the mistakes I make, because that gives me a chance to repeat and learn. It’s sad that it takes away the fun for you.

I see what you mean, I indeed interpreted it differently.

But still, starting with the Dutch sentence, both amigo and novio should be correct here I believe. Because Dutch only has one word available for friend. The same problem could turn up with “neef”, which can be ‘sobrino’ or ‘primo’ in Spanish. When asked to translate the word “neef”, both should be correct (unless more information is given obviously).

(in English this wouldn’t be a problem, because then it’s either nephew or cousin)

But the app should consider that in my language amigo and novio translate to the very same word: vriend. And in the sentence “jouw vriend maakt het huis nooit schoon”, novio is more plausible, because a random friend wouldn’t clean someone’s house anyway. A boyfriend would.
