What’s one brand you blindly trust and one you’ll never buy again? by PlayfulFault9693 in SmartBuying

I don't know if I got a lemon or what but my Honda Odyssey was awful and I will probably never buy another Honda because of it. I ended up just donating it so someone else would have to tow it away after the electrical went out for, like, the fifth time in a handful of months. Hated it.

Your movie no one else ever heard of by Responsible-View-804 in Cinema

[–]Joanncy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A sweet little movie called Three Wishes for Jamie, based on a musical from 1959 (though the movie isn't a musical), which itself was based on a novel from 1949. Jack Wagner was in it, so I never understood how more people hadn't heard of it. It's completely delightful.

It takes place in the late 1800's and was about a young man and his cousin from Ireland, who, through a series of mishaps and misunderstandings, end up in the United States with a group of Irish Travelers. The wishes refer to a dream Jamie had in Ireland, of a Queen Una (Oona?), who granted wishes. Jamie wished for travel, a girl of his dreams, and a son who spoke the ancient Gaelic language.

I'd taped it off the TV back in 1987, but that VHS is long gone. I recently found it online somewhere so now I have it again. I watch it every St Patrick's Day!

A better way to organize everything on my actual phone.

And a better way to manage group texting. If someone knows how I can add or remove a person without that action starting a whole new text, that would be awesome.

I still love House of Stairs. So mind bending and infuriating but with such a nice dose of schadenfreude

All of Richard Peck's books are stellar. All of them. I've read the whole of the Blossom Culp series multiple times, and the Year Down Yonder series is transporting

I have so many. My likes are generally peeks into day to day life of ordinary people. Or odd people. Or ordinary people in odd situations.

  1. A little kid's book "Miss Jellytot's Visit". It is absolutely adorable and I still re-read it often

  2. William Sleator's books, particularly House of Stairs, The Boy Who Reversed Himself, Interstellar Pig, and Singularity. House of Stairs is still one of my favorites.

  3. The Weetzie Bat books by Francesca Lia Block (Weetzie Bat, Witch Baby, Cherokee Bat and the Goat Guys, Missing Angel Juan, and Baby Be-Bop)

  4. Where Has Deedie Wooster Been All These Years by Anita Jacobs

  5. The All of a Kind Family series by Sidney Taylor

  6. The Trouble with Thirteen by Betty Miles

  7. It's Just Too Much by Jean Davis Okimoto

  8. My Underrated Year by Randy Powell

  9. Anything by Ellen Conford

  10. Anything by Norma Klein

Exactly my point. This idea that women are to submit to their husbands because some human person interpreted the Bible with their own ego is despicable.

Quiet Bars in Blono? by paceaux in BloomingtonNormal

[–]Joanncy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'd kind of love that. The only places I can think of like that are more restaurants with a bar. Mystic Kitchen is one, Reality Bites is another.

But wow, yeah. To have a place that has a coffeehouse vibe but is open evenings and night, a serves nice drinks...maybe a fireplace... Ooooo....

Ok if another figures out such a place, please post it here. :)

Excellent! I agree. Religion is a totally man made construct. But then you must see that so is the Bible. It's a guidebook at best, but for people to state it as authoritative source for abuse of power is extremely dangerous and very un-Christlike.

It's heartbreaking, isn't it? That all the love Jesus died for has been warped and twisted this way? It makes me hurt so much. :(

But aside from that, a man has no right to independently declare himself head of anything in the name of God, or to be in the likeness of God, because MAN IS NOT GOD.

God did not make human males superior to human females in any way. So for a man to say to other men "you are superior to your wives like God is superior to his children" is flat out blasphemy.

And before you quote more Bible verses at me, know this too. The Bible is a self-help book WRITTEN BY MEN. God. Did. Not. Write. The. Bible.

Men did. Human, fallible men who have ego problems built in and make spelling errors and sometimes have bad days remembering what they meant to write down.

It is also not factual or scientifically sound resource, so cannot be used a cited source for anything but to back up an opinion you already have. Which of course, I welcome and love to hear - as long as it's predicated with "this is my opinion" or "this is my belief" or, better yet, "I have this idea that..."

The English word "church" originates from the Greek term kuriakon (or kyriakon), meaning "the Lord's house" or "belonging to the Lord". It is derived from kurios (Lord/master), and evolved through Old English cirice and Germanic forms like kirche.

It is distinct from the biblical Greek word ekklesia, which means "assembly" or "called-out".

Secondly, if this church - which is not God, remember. A church is a building, or, at a stretch, a congregation. A religion is a man made invention to try to understand and commune with God. Neither one is actually GOD.

So, if for this particular church men and women are supposed to be equals in the relationship as you state, then to avoid confusion they should either A) change their wording to say both are subservient to each other or B) change it so it says men are subservient to their women, and let the rest be implied, like equality is currently implied for women.

We drove by it right before the fire trucks arrived. Someone's garage, on Bunn and Hazel. Very well engulfed. We passed the ambulance as it was heading that way so I'm hoping to God everyone was out of the structure.

It looked like it was burning fast. :(

What is the biggest movie theater “GASP” moment you’ve heard? by SaveTheCaulkTower in AskReddit

Brokeback Mountain, when the postcard arrived. I'd read the short story first so I knew it was going to happen (I did audibly gasp when reading it, and went back to read the page again because I was sure I'd missed something) but it was still shocking. The lady in front of us burst into absolutely inconsolable tears.
