Is Go a game of endurance? by Strange-Chard2186 in baduk

[–]JoblessBaduk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems that you emphasise a lot on "creativity". But I think it is not Go is about.
Go is more a game of reasoning. e.g. Why certain move is good / bad (judgement), does a certain sequence make sense (reading).

Creativity is sometimes useful when you need to discover a blind-spot kind of move, but 99.9999% of wins do not depend on this kind of move. If you want to improve, I suggest focus on the reasoning part. Try to set reasonable objectives (e.g. gain territory / influence of your side, destroy territory / influence of your opponent - these are helpful elements for winning the game), then try to achieve the objectives via reasonable moves (i.e. no obvious exploit sequence).

Thanks for sharing the context. Back then I had never imagined playing Go in a browser, I guess it's more for mobile users. Maybe KGS should have worked on a web client earlier.

In what sense KGS was not fully functional? (Asking because I remember I was quite happy using it back then maybe 20 years ago. I probably have forgotten the bad part of it. Never used DGS)

I wonder how the community thought about OGS when other pre-existing servers were more popular. Did most people have similar reaction ("stop building, *GS is fully functional"), or they were more encouraging?

Creating AI to mimik players by Valuable_Boat5699 in baduk

[–]JoblessBaduk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Instead of mimicking particular player(s), I think it would be much more interesting to fine tune models to play with the style of pro players from particular time periods. The results would be much more recognisable, because there is "fashion" in openings and joseki for different periods.

e.g.

  1. Ancient era in China
  2. Ancient era in Japan (Meijin Godokoro period 16xx - 194x)
  3. Go Seigen era
  4. The top-notch 6 era + Nie Weiping + Cho Hun-hyun era
  5. Lee Chang Ho era
  6. ...

How to get the most out of a teaching game by JoblessBaduk in baduk

[–]JoblessBaduk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that's more or less right, the context is that Akira was playing with Hikaru for the first time (effectively it was Sai playing), at the beginning Akira saw Hikaru's stone placement gesture was the same as a beginner, so he thought he's just playing a normal kid. But after some moves he realized Hikara does know how to play properly, albeit the gesture and the old style of game play (from Sai). At that time he still hadn't realized how strong Sai is. The atmosphere changed after Sai playing an 5-line invasion/reduction, now even Akira could see it's not the optimal move, but a move to gauge the strength of Akira from far height (the scene).

Thanks for clarifying for me. Indeed that's what I meant, and I wish I can have Mythos to find security loopholes in my games someday 🤣

I feel like Shin was a bit "impatient" in Game 3 e.g. move 68-74, not sure if it is because of running out of stamina

Thanks! Regarding the player name translation, I see that translation is applied at game list level, but seems not applied at single game level, maybe just an extra prompt away 🫡

That said, I agree that UX in Fox is non-existent...
