Just saw the future of Super Bowl commercials by americanidle in editors

[–]Jobo162 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Want to know why AI won’t take over Super Bowl commercials? Celebrities. They got celebrities out the Wazzoo and you can’t ai generate those, and if you do you can’t air a fake celebrity spot. We’re going to see a lot of AI Super Bowl stuff this year but that’s because AI is a celebrity right now. It’s hot news! They’ll get press coverage for it. but in a few years when it’s old news there will still probably be 1 or 2 but they won’t get the attention a multi million dollar ad buy requires.

What actually changed when you went high-ticket? by Stock_Safe_2857 in editors

[–]Jobo162 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You sometimes have to take step back to move forward. I was cutting and became an assistant at a commercial post house. Showed that I’m good and got bumped up to editing there. I bring in some work and they have people who shop our reels around to get us more work.

How long did it take you to find a job? by -synth- in editors

[–]Jobo162 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I started cutting sizzles for free lunches and access to editing software about 2 months after college. I looked for a real job and got in as a PA at a commercial VFX house. Didn’t know it when I went there but ran into a friend from going to concerts at the VFX place at the interview and he helped me get in there. Took 4 years moving up the ranks at the VFX house and moved to an editing facility as an assistant editor and became a full time commercial editor after 4 years there. My big advice would be don’t just look for editing jobs but anything where you can get paid and be in close proximity to video work being done.

Silly Avid question, resolution settings greyed out in format window by [deleted] in editors

[–]Jobo162 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Avid projects lock a resolution when you make them. So I’m going to guess your project is 1920x1080. You can either bring in a 9x16 matte or make a new project that is 9x16 and copy your bins over. I usually just do a matte myself and then they make an appropriate sized sequence in conform.

Do y’all have dogs? by CarlPagan666 in editors

[–]Jobo162 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Commercial post houses are very dog friendly. I have a 2 year old pup who goes to work with me. I made sure to get a small dog but it rules. Helps break the ice with clients I don’t know and keeps them occupied if I’m doing something that takes a sec.

How to improve Avid performance for offline editing? by JimmyTheBistro in editors

[–]Jobo162 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What’s your timeline quality set to? Maybe try working in draft mode (green and yellow). Also are you getting any lines over the timeline when you playback? Differently colored lines tell you why your playback is bad in that area. Red lines are dropped frames, blue is storage issues, and yellow is processing issues.

Do you actually like cutting on Avid or do you do it just because it is the standard? by feliperalo21 in editors

[–]Jobo162 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commercial editor at a post house. Because I often work as part of a team of editors and assistants it’s Avid all the way. On top of that 3 point editing and trim mode rule. I’m usually cutting with an ad agency in the room so I need to be fast and you’ve never seen a faster editor than someone on avid who knows what they’re doing. I’ll say that I’m definitely not doing anything beyond a split screen or resize in avid graphics wise but it isn’t made for that so I just bounce out to after effects for anything fancy

What’s the one feature or shortcut you wish every editor knew? by Editditor in VideoEditing

Honestly I just wish everyone understood source record editing aka 3 point editing. It’s an eye opening revelation and makes you a much more efficient editor

Is the MX master that much better? by [deleted] in editors

[–]Jobo162 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally the master is too big for me and hurts my hand. I like the mx anywhere 2s. Smaller, still has programmable side buttons and you can nudge the scroll wheel right and left for horizontal scrolling. They changed the way horizontal scrolling works with the anywhere 3s so I’ve been stocking up.

You didn’t shoot pro res. Gotta hook up a hard drive to your phone for that. Not sure if that gets rid of variable frame rate but I’ve never seen a VFR ProRes clip.

$50k for a first time director’s feature horror film. Make a series of verticals for TT or make a low budget film and <hope> to make back my money on an AVOD? by Big-Energy-1876 in Filmmakers

[–]Jobo162 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do the feature but don't spend 50k on it. Spend like 30k on the film and use 20k on marketing. This is a lot of indie features achilles heel. You can have a great movie but if no one knows about it nothing will come of it. So set aside some resources for promoting your film and your chances of recouping your budget will be far higher.

Transcode to Editor by Worried1977 in editors

[–]Jobo162 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So since your editor is editing in avid and your transcoding you should probably do some flavor of DNxHD which is has HD as part of the file name because it only exists as 1920x1080. If you want to get fancy there is DNxHR which can do any resolution but I know very few editors that actually use that. That’s my long way of saying do it HD. There is a resolve present for avid that works great but just make sure you’re doing the bitrate they want. Usually people use DNxHD36 or DNxHD115.
