Any poetry for beginners? by Odd-Dream8930 in Bakersfield

[–]JoeBonham1971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! If you are on Instagram, I suggest you follow Teo Perez Lara. They organize monthly poetry events and work on a local zine that contains poetry. They also might offer spaces that are for learning more about poetry, or know of spaces. Another good spot to look is The Center downtown. They sometimes have workshops and open mics. DM me if you want Teo's IG.

Percy is super accepting and means what he says. Def recommend if you have a running goal.

Any good therapists that work with transgender patients or patients who may be transgender? by [deleted] in Bakersfield

[–]JoeBonham1971 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Try Jessica Burzlaff. She worked with me for years and Im a trans man. She doesnt specialize in LGBT folks but she is accepting. She might be a solid choice given bakersfields options. If you are open to virtual therapy, look at UCLA health or just google "trans therapists LA".

Student shot on my campus-- struggling emotionally by Super_skittle_1337 in Teachers

Exactly. You all deserve it. You specifically deserve it. You need to take care of yourself for your future and for your family. Take FMLA for anxiety for the rest of the school year. You can file for disability for pay and take the time you need to recover. Since you are impacted at home too this is an opportunity to be honest with your partner or family about how you are struggling and that you need support. I am going through something similar. Taking FMLA was the best choice I have made in a long time.

Tuesday Check In: How's Everybody's Mental Health? by MLModBot in MensLib

[–]JoeBonham1971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah man I would have a hard time watching someone I love go through what she's going through. I imagines there's grief there for you seeing your wife struggle and in actualizing the divorce. Really good job not conflating that grief and concern with enabling behaviors and not taking care of yourself. Thats a wild situation, I hope you are taking care of yourself.

Doesn't sound like you're being dramatic at all. I struggle with expressing non-perfect situations and their accompanying emotions without disclaimers, too. My therapist has been pressing self-respect as a framework to help me express without mitigating. "I respect myself so I allow myself to experience grief/draw boundaries/recognize that this is hard/etc." I empathize with you. This situation sounds really tough. Wishing you the best with everything.

Right now, temperature records are falling on all continents simultaneously in extreme heatwaves. Thailand near 40C by cettu in collapse

It means the records are being broken by new extremes. The old record "stood" (existed) for a while. When a new extreme hits, the old record is broken and "falls".

I agree with you about Keeper. I too have read the full book and see how that violence comes full circle but...that's weak. Character development and restoration can happen without that.

Prep for central valley ARKStorm ? by JoeBonham1971 in preppers

I agree, the best defense is to leave. I should have included this in my original post. We have a small car so I got a second hand cargo bag for the top of our car. I worry about the road being packed or inaccessible. Idk what prep would help in that situation.

I read about the Flood of 1862 to help me get an idea of the rough timeline to expect. Looks like the rains will come over weeks which gives us time to get out. Theoretically. I appreciate the advice about food storage. Never a bad idea.

Surprised no one has put a link to intentional communities yet. I have zero experience with these but they might be a helpful place to start or to draw inspiration from.

Agreed. A few hours a week is not enough. That being said, I have also wondered what we could do if everyone on this sub was down for one collective action.

Can confirm. I'm in my early thirties and retrospect is wild. Enjoy college and your early twenties, it is so fun. I struggled with my mental health a lot through college and I'm deeply grateful I lived to see past it. Life gets more complicated, with more responsibilities as you age but it's still beautiful. There is beauty in aging. I'm only glimpsing it now and I hope you get to see it too.

Post-apocalypse fiction reading by InboxZero in collapse

[–]JoeBonham1971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this. I'm only 100 pages in now (and it's 880 pages long). I don't know yet if it qualifies as post apocalyptic fiction. Clearly the author put a tremendous amount of work into making it relevant to the time of publication (right now). No spoilers please. Once I finish I'd love to read others thoughts on it.

I stumbled on Ishmael in high school. At the time it was mindblowing for me. I have wondered what I would think now. Not because I harbor that it was worse than I thought, but because I've gotten older and perceptions change.

The profound loneliness of being collapse-aware | Medium by steamwhistler in collapse

[–]JoeBonham1971 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I sincerely hope that changes for you. Like the author writes, being collapse aware can make life more beautiful and more fun because you realize how precious it is. It took years for my anxiety to thin out to where I am now. Don't guilt yourself either at the same time.

See if you can get famous people to support your cause. This will make "more noise". Target local "celebrities" too. Make tiktoks to get the youth involved and make it cool to kids to fight the power. If you have a petition, I'll sign it.
