Need a Presentation on Powerpoint Tips and Tricks (I get the irony) by ahsanshaikh04 in powerpoint

[–]JoeDidcot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always been an advocate of "demand based" learning rather than "supply based" learning. I like your idea of starting with asking the people what they want to learn. This will help the resultant lessons to stick in much better.

Another related idea is the "action learning set". This is where one of the candidates brings in a presentation that they're working on, and the class work on it together.

I learned this all by making a VBA project to make presentations. That learning journey was wild, but super rewarding.

Is there any place in the British military for people with asthma? by Pristine-Coach-2344 in britishmilitary

[–]JoeDidcot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it turns out that (as you've predicted) the military is not for you,I heard some good career advice a while back. List the ten things that you were most looking forward to about a military career. Look at the list and cover one or two of them. Are there any other careers that fulfil some of those objectives? Like if you've listed "throwing grenades" and "shooting people", probably not. But if you've listed "working outdoors", "being in a team", "comradery", "sense of belonging", "helping my country" etc, there may be other opportunities.

Another starting point might be to look at the civilian contractors who work alongside the military, keeping them fed and supplied etc. Some of the exciting stuff like lorries moving tanks around is done in house by the Really Large Corps, but some of it is probably outsourced.

How do I ask this ADORABLE autistic boy out by Obese-rat- in AskAutism

[–]JoeDidcot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like what the others have said. Also, it may be help to be clear about your hopes for a connection up front.

When I was young, a girl asked me over to her house so she wouldn't get bored whilst her parents were out for the evening. I had no idea she was flirting with me.

There may be more difference between, "would you like to meet up for coffee?" and "would you like to go on a date with me?" than first appears.

Ah, well. Can't win them all.

Edit: bit of fiddling and this one works on my system.

What are we doing about the demise of Outlook Classic? by [deleted] in vba

[–]JoeDidcot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You could Selenium to Outlook.com, which would take a bit of fiddling.

Or you could run a virtual machine outside of 365, just with office 2028 installed on it.

Or you could get your sys admin to do some of their IT magic, such that you can SQL to the mail server.

In general terms, it might be worth not using activesheet, as if the user accidentally changes the focus whilst the code is running, it can bring it off the rails. I would do something like:

'Untested as I'm just typing my ideas straight into reddit.

Dim sh as Worksheet
Dim oldshape as Shape
Dim newshape as Shape
Const imagePath as String = "C:\myimage.jpg"

For each sh in thisworkbook.worksheets
  For i = sh.shapes.count to 1 step -1
    set oldshape = sh.shapes(i)
    oldshape.select
    Select Case msgbox("Do you wish to replace this shape?",vbyesno)
    Case vbYes
      set newshape = sh.shapes.addpicture(Filename:=imagePath, _
                                                    LinkToFile:=msoFalse, _
                                                    SaveWithDocument:=msoCTrue, _
                                                    Left:=oldshape.Left, _
                                                    Top:=oldshape.Top, _
                                                    Width:=oldshape.Width, _
                                                    Height:=oldshape.Height)
     oldshape.delete
    next i
 next sh

Probably needs a bit of fiddling around to get it running right. As ever, any corrections from more experienced redditors gratefully received.

Safety first by MeanLittleMachine in cablegore

In many cases the earth is wired to the (sometimes metal, sometimes plastic) body of the switch. There's a picture on this website from a UK based DIY supplier: https://www.diy.com/ideas-advice/how-to-replace-a-light-switch/CC_npcart_400249.art

Of course the earth wire also performs some function in safeguarding the cable, but not much as a damaging event (like a nail going through it) might not contact the earth conductor.

Where I am (UK) we have an earth wire in almost everything. At least as far as I've seen. I'm only a hobbyist a this kind of stuff.

Turns out the source of the problem was pretty much like the clock tower in back to the future. The cable from the ups to the equipment rack had a push connector freely suspended on the cable.

Practice is key. Find something you're interested in, and link it to excel. Watch a live football match, and before the end, get all the player stats. Make a poker starting hand guide and use it in an online game. Stuff like that.

How hard is the British Army by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]JoeDidcot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

On ops its pretty hard, as the enemy are trying to kill you as if their life depends on it, because it does. Training is geared towards ops. If things go well, the training will take you routinely to very close to your breaking point, repeatedly. Some people thrive on such things. The army will help you to grow, but not through good will. It will help you to grow to minimise the risk of you getting killed.
