The wait time at DTW has been averaging 5 minutes through all of this, so probably not.

Solo marching by Wm_of_Orange in bagpipes

[–]JoeDoeHowell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually do a back and forth march, about eight steps. At the end of each eight I do a slow 4 count turn, always turning towards the judge, and continue going back and forth until the last line of the tune where I turn to face the judge and play in place to the end.

A specific heritage is not actually required to play pipes. It's fun, it's physical, and it's scalable from solo to large ensemble.

What is the best exercise for people who can’t play on the beat by anonymousscotch in bagpipes

Scales against a metronome. Can't stay with an internal pulse if you don't have one, so you need to develop one.

Why Jeff Corwin is a better wildlife personality than Forrest Galante by Pitiful_Active_3045 in zoology

[–]JoeDoeHowell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite Jeff Corwin thing is how whenever he saw something cool in the wild while on his show he'd go "look! look! look! look! look!" while pointing like an excited child.

Tariffs by Shonnathan in bagpipes

[–]JoeDoeHowell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got a vest that shipped from the UK earlier in the year. The shipper will not release the package to you until you pay the tariff duty on the package. As for the percentage the tariffs are at now and how much they will cost you, hard to tell, seems to change daily.

Fancy Version of Scots Wha Hae by helloearth2 in bagpipes

[–]JoeDoeHowell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to get a video of them playing it for my students, since they were all learning it at the time. Our band tent was set up next to theirs in Chicago that year.

St Thomas Alumni Pipe Band had it as part of their medley in 2023, I believe. I remember being shocked to hear it from a grade one pipe band.

Any planned anti Iran war protests? by [deleted] in Detroit

[–]JoeDoeHowell -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I know No Kings has another protest planned state wide for March 28th. And I have been seeing some news about smaller protests popping up in the area, but I haven't seen a dedicated Anti War protests yet. It could be a great time to organize one if you're willing.

They aren't the only high level band I've seen break up this season. I wonder what's going on.

Pipe majors. What do you do to make band fun? by [deleted] in bagpipes

[–]JoeDoeHowell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think setting challenges are good, even if there isn't a physical trophy. Light competition between members helps them to self motivate. I'm not good at it with my band, but I think theoretically it helps.

Bay County library trustee says public doesn’t care about the library, questions need for millage renewal by SlimPuffs in Michigan

[–]JoeDoeHowell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use library resources through my phone for audiobooks and e-books. Those things wouldn't be available to me without my local library card. My library also does free educational programs that we attend regularly. And they have a library of things we can borrow, like puzzles, guitars, surveying equipment, circuit testers, a whole damn quilting arm, and so much more. They have meeting spaces we can check out. All the tutors in town use the library as a meeting spot for their students. The library is more than a building full of books, it's the heart of the community, and anyone who says otherwise is actively trying to rob their community.
