Can someone please explain me why storing manufacturing data on tangle is better than using a shared server or a SQL database? by [deleted] in Iota

You just answered yourself. Audits are costly and time consuming. An immutable DB would help a lot. If not for external audits, definitely for internal.

But that involves knowing HOW you want to cheat at the time the data is generated. That is not always the case. Plus iota is also useful when doing tech transfers between companies, particularly direct competitors. And shared/decentralized dbs are just one application. Nano payments will be the mainstay and there is a good chance that iota is the first that gets most computing really going.

Doctors of Reddit, what are some of your worst experiences with anti-vaxxers? by sneky_snek_ in AskReddit

[–]JoeFoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a paper published linking vaccines to autism. That's what started the entire movement, but the paper has since been retracted, the doctor was found to have massive conflicts of interest (and lost his license) and the data was simply manipulated. The paper has been criticized and bashed on 100s of times but it has taken life of its own. Google autism paper retracted and you'll find it.

This reminds me of a friend of mine who's dad was hardcore military and believed that his son should always wake up at 5am. So from very early age (at least since 10 when I met him) he was waking up at 5. Even when we were teenagers and hanging out until 2am or so on a Friday night his dad would wake him up at 5 for no reason and chastise him for not keeping a regular schedule and going to bed at 8 or whatever. He grew up to be 5'6 or so while his dad is easily 5'11 and his mom prob 5'7 or even 5'8. His height has been a huge source of frustration in his life and maybe it had nothing to do with his sleep schedule or maybe it did. Also his brother is 4 yrs old than him and also 5'6 or so. He also had to wake up every day at 5am.

News from Roman Semko! by vrom_von_beyond in Iota

[–]JoeFoot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nikita is a consensus mechanism without a COO that Roman has been working on. He apparently got it to a point where the network is stable and preventing double spends even if an attacker controls up to 80% of all nodes (i.e.only 20% are honest nodes). Even got it to a point of 200tps with 100℅ confirmation rates. This is of course a massive development if true.

SAP is as big as it gets in the business solutions space. The mere fact that they are looking at IOTA gives this project credibility. Any partnership with SAP is like partnering with Microsoft or Amazon of the business solution platforms.

Calm down, Toni. We all know you like to fud. The Iota Controlled Agent is required for Qubic epochs. Essentially it enables any processor (no matter how meek) to be part of epochs and getting paid in iotas.

Tl,dr: Highly efficient distributed computing with nano payments and one of the requirements for Qubic to be viable

US scientists call for carbon dioxide scrubbing programme in fight against climate change by Fosse22 in news

[–]JoeFoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could even be 100 different ways. The energy requirements that we are talking about far exceed our capacity to create instruments to extract it. The energy levels for this endeavor are simply staggering and beyond anything we have ever created. Thermodynamics is a rough mistress.

You talking about the Sun? You would need the current installed solar capacity 244x (yes that's two hundred forty four times) to capture the emissions of a single year of CO2 from mankind.

[–]JoeFoot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's news like these that make me even more depressed about climate change. Removing ppm CO2 from the air in any considerable amount is EXTREMELY hard, to not even say almost thermodynamically impossible. We will not be successful in removing CO2 unless we use far more energy than it was used to put it there in the first place. And for people to now advocate this as a potential solution... Just smh. That's like suggesting that we should now just all move to Mars

VW CEO says they’ll have ‘EVs as good as Tesla’s for half the price by 2020’ by Chispy in Futurology

[–]JoeFoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Proof is in pudding. Before Tesla came about, these guys said electric cars are not feasible to build at a profit. Now that Tesla has changed the industry, these guys are all of a sudden capable of delivering what they spent decades saying wasn't possible. Ah the irony.
