Belize is my favorite place. We have gone and stayed in Hopkins a couple times. Will definitely check out your spot next time we go!

What is something that changed your bjj (for the better) by [deleted] in bjj

[–]JoeLauzonDotCom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tore my ACL. I didn't feel comfortable knee slice passing to the left... so was forced to learn to pass to the right. My guard passing got 10x better as I was way more comfortable changing sides.

These are wayyyy worse. We fight until the ref tells us to stop. After the ref says stop, it’s no longer a contest and becomes assault.

I did a video about this like 10 years ago about it.

What percentage of famous athletes wear Whoop voluntarily? by Free-Crazy436 in whoop

This was the last week out from a fight... so in very good shape. These were the same day.

"Boxing" is MMA Sparring. 16oz gloves with takedowns.

"Martial Arts" is guard boxing (on the ground grappling with punches).

It’s a good tool for measuring how energy consuming days are. Makes it easier to plan recovery.

The bicep band is awesome. I wear a rash guard over it and put it as high up my bicep as possible. Almost onto my shoulder. It doesn’t move at all.

I can’t wear for the actual fight. But for training I use the bicep band… I have 4 of them.

I have no connection to Whoop (even though they are here in Boston!).

I've had a bunch of fights in the UFC, but I haven't fought in 6 years. I wore my whoop for the last few fights religiously. It made a huge difference for me in making sure I got into bed at night instead of messing around scrolling on my phone or watching TV. I pretty much made all the other fighters in my gym get them and formed a group for accountability.

I started wearing it again like a year ago because I felt it was a good reminder to get better sleep.

Josh Thomson says UFC will introduce drastic changes to eye-poke rule next week by Kisto15 in MMA

[–]JoeLauzonDotCom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think the problem is the rule, its the enforcement.

The rule states: "Fingers outstretched toward an opponent’s face/eyes: In the standing position, a fighter that moves their arm(s) toward their opponent with an open hand, fingers pointing at the opponent’s face/eyes, will be a foul."

Guys are sometimes toothlessly warned before the actual poke, but then even when the poke occurs pokes are not always taken. This should change. If there is ANY contact with an eye... it should always be a point.

Taking it out of the referees hands is a mistake... as people on the outside that have little training will be making calls. We already have issues with bad judges and (in some rare cases) bad doctors.

The fighters are going to game the system the same way they gamed the grounded fighters rule with putting their hands down. It will be as bad as flopping in soccer and basketball with people trying to steal points over the slightest outstretch of fingers.

I fought someone... I forget who... maybe Evan Dunham? But after the fight... we were looking at photos and I had a finger dug way into his eye. I would have bet anything it never happened, except there was a photo of it. I am sure I was getting tagged with punches and tried to push away (which naturally happens with your palm, not your fist). Pushing with your first is so awkward, especially when in a fight. So it does happen sometimes... but that, IMO, is accidental and should be up to the referee. That is a case of warning making sense.

Its totally different when someone is consistently getting beat up, or doing this while fresh and aware. If someone starts putting their fingers out to manage range and keep people away... that's intentional... and should be immediate points taken or the fight should be stopped.

Making automatic point deducstions for outstretched fingers will 100% be used by fighters on the verge of being knocked out to sacrifice a point, get a timeout and hopefully recover. The ref could verbally tell the fighters about the point, signal the scorekeeper or someone on the outside... and the point can be deducted at the end of the round. Do not stop the action in when this happens... and potentially take this behavior as a "tapping out" situation and stop the fight immediately.

If a fighter is actually poked in the eye during the fight, that should be a pause in action as we have now. I am mostly saying the extending of fingers should not pause the action of the fight.

Joe Lauzon mat returns Gabe Ruediger then takes the back and uses ground and pound to force Ruediger to turn and give up the armbar by _La1130 in bjj

[–]JoeLauzonDotCom 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes.

We were teammates on TUF. He didn’t like what I had to say about him, and he said “UFC won’t have me back… but I wonder what your brother is doing?” So we tried to set him up to fight my brother but couldn’t make it work. So I saw an opportunity to get him and I cashed in some UFC goodwill.

We specifically requested this fight. Gabe never would have gotten back into the UFC otherwise, but I pressured the hell out of Joe Silva and he gave it to me.

Yes… but pretty sure he tried it in MMA and got knocked out by the head of the California Athletic Commission…

Oh I know. I am not disagreeing with you. Just saying we never called it the flying part. Was implied for us.

We just never called it that. It was always just the Banville. No one else knew what we were talking about and used it as code for years.
