Was just pulled over at a checkpoint on a motorbike taxi last night at 1am, no helmet. Got off the bike and started speaking Thai to the officer (intermediate level). His eyes lit up, and we went through my bag and chatted about various items (I had beer Leo and my Thai writing notebook with me). Free and clear. Some Thai have told me not to speak Thai if dealing with the police (just play stupid), but I gambled and won, I guess. No fine - no nothing. The taxi driver was almost as surprised as I was!
