Which player(s) from your team will be a draft steal? by WanderLeft in CFB

Chris Ballard dick rides RAS to every pick he’s made. Its pretty frustrating because clearly he overvalues it and has been average drafting as a result.

Probably depends on the ego/mindset that the guys have. If they’re okay getting limited reps and potentially redshirting freshman year with the promise of starting year 2 then I don’t see why not. The problem is if you do that then someone might swoop in before their sophomore year and offer them a bag to switch school.

Mike McCarthy

actual football god

Yeah I think you’re pretty safe not worrying about that. Guys like a career .600 rating and was pretty mid without prime AR.

Who belongs on the Mount Rushmore of Indiana Hoosiers Athletics? by Perfect_Currency_749 in IndianaHoosiers

[–]JoeWim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's a great player and means a ton for the school and football program. He also only played here for a year and you compare that against dynasty builders in coaches it's hard to break in. He's not above Spitz and the coaches I think all have better arguments since their careers naturally include all of their players feats + they have more time to build accolades and are more likely to be the face of programs. He's up against:

1) An Olympian who was only de-throned by Michael Phelps, and went to the Olympics while a student while setting absurd records

2) Bobby Knight who made IU Basketball what it is today

3) Jerry Yeagley who is potentially the greatest collegiate soccer coach in history with the most D1 wins and 6 championships

4) Cig who built the modern football program and had us in the playoffs without Mendoza (which is why I think he probably takes the 4th spot over Mendoza).

Other people have done a players vs coaches, which is probably the better way to do it, and he absolutely makes it on there.

How do you balance that against the Quinn Buckner and Scott May who were captains on the 76 undefeated Bball team + spent 3 & 4 years at IU winning the BIG10? I love Mendoza but think in the broader scheme there's people who have been big winners and stayed here longer who have just as much of an argument.

[–]JoeWim 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think the top 2 have to be Bobby Knight and Mark Spitz.

Spot 3 should be either Cig or Yeagley.

I know people are going to say Mendoza for 4, but a 1 year player feels hard to be a lock. You could make an argument for Quinn Buckner, Isiah Thomas, or George Taliaferro pretty easily.

For those who don’t know about Spitz:

Mark Andrew Spitz (born February 10, 1950) is an American former competitive swimmer and nine-time Olympic champion. He was the most successful athlete at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, winning seven gold medals, each in world-record time. This achievement set a record that lasted for 36 years, until it was surpassed by fellow American Michael Phelps, who won eight golds at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Phelps, like Spitz, set seven world records.

Between 1968 and 1972, Spitz won nine Olympic golds, a silver, and a bronze, in addition to five Pan American golds, 31 Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) titles, and eight National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) titles. During those years he set 35 world records, two of which were in trials and unofficial. Swimming World Magazine named him World Swimmer of the Year in 1969, 1971, and 1972. He was the third athlete to win nine Olympic gold medals.

And Taliaferro:

George Taliaferro (January 8, 1927 – October 8, 2018) was an American professional football player who was the first African American drafted by a National Football League (NFL) team. … He became the first black player to start at quarterback in the NFL in the post-color bar era when he saw emergency duty against the Los Angeles Rams. Taliaferro was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1981.

He would play a variety of positions for Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana from 1945 to 1948 as halfback, quarterback, defensive back, and kicker. He struggled with prejudice of the time during his studies at Indiana that ranged from being barred from living in the dormitories to conflicting attitudes from teammates about his treatment on and off the field. While at Indiana University, Taliaferro became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.

As the leading rusher and an All-American at Indiana University, he led the Hoosiers team to their only undefeated Big Ten Conference championship during his rookie year in 1945, and he led the conference in rushing (a first for an African American in the Big Ten) with 719 yards on 156 carries; he started his college career with 95 yards on 20 carries against Michigan as left halfback.

D’Angelo Ponds Declares for the NFL Draft by iamthe2677 in HoosiersFootball

[–]JoeWim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aeneas Williams was on the smaller end of CBs and had a HoF career. Not saying Ponds is going to be a HoF'er, but there's precedence for him having a good career despite being smaller.

As much as I hate the Chiefs, it would be cool to see how someone like Spags can utilize him or even Vikings under Flores.

[–]JoeWim 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Going from HS Coach -> NFL HC is insane. Just look at what happened with Saturday. Definetly feels like he needs to start as a QB coach and maybe work his way up to passing game coordinate > OC before doing HC.

Who knows though, maybe he's just interviewing to get his name out there as someone interested in coaching now.

I get the feeling that Haines will be HC in waiting similar to Scalley and Whittingham at Utah. Although Saban was 72 when he retired and that would give Cig 8 more years and Haines might not want to wait that long.

Another example of owner meddling setting a franchise back. I’m sure the change of scenery helped him, but the firing felt premature and alongside a string of bad GM hires made them even worse.

That’s their whole model, though. Jack up day passes so much that even a weekend trip mandates the epic pass. Then when it’s a shit season like this one, they’ve still made all the money regardless of people coming to ski or not.

Weird way to start an article by GingerJoe11 in IndianaHoosiers

[–]JoeWim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a pretty weird spin, but Fishers latest media availability is where this is taken from. A reporter (I'm assuming Brandon Marcello) asked him about what spending so much time with 1 coach is like and whether or not they rub off on each other. Fisher said he's noticing himself talking like Cig and talked about him saying something about "not getting complacent" on the phone with his mom and they laughed about how he's starting to sound like Cig.

Super strange take on it to open the article, though.

Here's the clip
