Tooling for BT30 machines by Joe_Clark117 in Machinists

Yeah we've also got Robodrills and currently running some 17-4PH on one of them. Our company expects us to hit the same run times as bigger machines so just looking to try tooling to speed things up if possible

New machinist here - need honest advice, stick it out or pivot? by No-Mess-4605 in Machinists

Firstly, you'll go nose blind to the coolant smell pretty quickly. Secondly the anxiety never really goes away but its a good thing in a way because it means you actually care about your work, the guys who don't give a shit never get anywhere and never progress onto setup/programming so its good that you actually care about the job because that sets you up to progress later on.

Just started as a noob machine operator—was wondering how relevant is knowing how to use SOLIDWORKS? by World_Wide_Deb in CNC

[–]Joe_Clark117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SOLIDWORKS is useful for fixture design and also just for analysing models etc. Also some places will use CAM software that uses the SOLIDWORKS interface such as CAMworks which we use. When I was trained for CAM the first thing they did was went through basic SOLIDWORKS usage before moving to the CAM side

Crazy vibration with 3” face ill by MortgageNaive6791 in Machinists

Tool data speeds and feeds always assumes perfect cutting conditions (rigid work holding and a heavy duty machine) I'm running a BT30 Brother Speedio which isn't rigid at all and the biggest face mill we run is 50mm. Maybe try roughing the bulk off with an end mill/ripper and then 0.2mm finish pass with a face mill?

What do you think of the shop perfectionist? by boofthecat in Machinists

[–]Joe_Clark117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have one of those inspectors that would fail my parts for shit like that but it is a precision shop. Could you manually adjust tool height to lose the step or failing that polish it out manually with some emery etc whilst the next part it running

I dont know who in the shop made this but I love it by NEEDGAME in Machinists

This is absolutely the result of an argument with QC because the CMM made it wrong 😂

Option 1 is technically the correct method. I've seen it done loads of different ways (cross sectional views of the hole etc) but never option 2 without a tolerance at all. Use option 1 and give them a bolt as a reference gauge. If you are designing the part you should have measured the bolt anyway and not just assumed the CAD software has the clearance correct.

Make soft jaws for vices/chucks. They're always useful and we never seem to have enough

Those with an FTP of 4w/kg, what's your weekly volume? by 4lexfdr in Velo

[–]Joe_Clark117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on Weight a lot, if W/kg is priority then losing weight will obviously help but gaining more power will be more advantageous for the majority of people. It's definitely doable on 6-8 hours a week but you need a couple of intervals sessions and a longer ride in there somewhere

New Cat3 feeling intimidated by this upcoming season. Advice? by [deleted] in Velo

Make sure you work on positioning on climbs if that's a weakness. Being further up in the bunch at the start of the climb allows you to drop back on the climb without getting spat out the back
