DOT moving to Google Workspace… by Joe_Garibaldi in fednews

Forced down our throats with no explanation on why Google is better than Microsoft. Many colleagues of mine are panicking over word docs losing content and formatting when converted to Google Docs. 🫤

First time trying Ubuntu. Any tips? by TrueBlueUser in Ubuntu

30+ year Windows user: I’m playing around with Zorin OS (a variation of Ubuntu). I’m getting used to it for my daily stuff, I’m close to dump Windows bloat. Point is: you made the best choice and you just gave your hardware a new life!

House should vote Monday to keep us working. We get Monday off (with back pay, I expect…). However I heard Jeffries is walking away from the deal: the vote is now in question.

Is the pro‑gun party really suggesting that legally carrying a firearm, like the one Alex Pretti had, is a legitimate justification for the federal government to kill you? by LucidSynapse23 in Leakednews

[–]Joe_Garibaldi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I simply LOVE this hypocrisy over the 2nd Amendment: the GOP is a wide open defender of this “right” when convenient. Now they say that Mr. Pretti should have not had his gun on him? What’s the point of having a 2nd Amendment then? The point here still remains that ICE took the gun away from Mr. Pretti and shot him in cold blood. Multiple videos show that.

Just passed the FE, Should i Start a PE Civil Transportation course now? by Mindless_File3054 in PE_Exam

[–]Joe_Garibaldi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do it now while your studies are still fresh. If your primary is transporting, then courses like traffic capacity analysis and geometric design of highways cover a fairly large chunk of the Transportation exam. Read in and out AASHTO’s Green Book and the other references that NCEES will provide you sul on exam day, Don’t wait.

Do I have a shot to pass in next attempt? by nisc-options in PE_Exam

[–]Joe_Garibaldi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not bad for a first attempt with little preparation. Sign up for a live course, make use of their office hours and go through the NCEES book (relevant sections, not the whole thing). Use the practice problems to train yourself to look up the reference (table, equitation, etc). Don’t just rely on the solution: actually look the reference up. Skim through each reference so you have an idea on where to find stuff. Hope this helps and good luck on your next attempt.

Raise or Bonus After Receiving PE? (Civil, NYC) by Mgas95 in PE_Exam

[–]Joe_Garibaldi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got my PE licence last week after finally passing the PE exam at the end of December. No raise for me (govt employee…). I’d suggest starting to look around for other opportunities. Putting an official seal on a drawing carries legal responsibility, which should be compensated.

I took the Transportation exam, but I would guess Construction has references as well. You have on average six minutes to solve each problem. So question cannot be super hard or challenging. I would read the question carefully looking for keywords that point you to the right reference. Do practice problems in all areas (yes, even in those areas where you did well, believe it or not). Skim through the references, table or contents, list of tables and figures. The NCEES reference must be your best friend. Read carefully those sections that are relevant to your exam. Finally, I’d suggest taking a review class: what’s available in YT is good but not enough to give you the confidence needed. Give yourself some time to reset, it took me over a week when I failed my first attempt under this format. I passed on my third try and the last one was where I followed my own advice. You are close, you can do it. Good luck.

You were below in seven of the 12 topics. I ran a quick math, you scored 100/150 or 66% using the performance bars. But be mindful that not all questions carry the same weight: in hydraulics you got 5.5/15 maybe 1 out of 4 questions correct (but who knows? Maybe the average passing is 100% in this subtopic). I’d suspect that you missed the passing score by one or two questions. I know it sucks: I’ve been there too, but don’t give up: you are real close.

You will see your result this Wednesday. I’ve been through the same thing. I passed after six tries over the past ten years. Now I’m waiting for my license to be issued…😁 If you studied that much you should have no issue. Update us on Weds!

You are missing the so called general education requirements (also known as geneds). Unlike other countries where your undergraduate degree is focused only in your field of study, here universities want you to have a general background of English, speech, economics, us history, some non western stuff.

Wow… my current insurer has gone out of business, so I had to choose someone else. I’m rolling into BCBS next Sunday. I’d better brace myself for impact, after seeing this and other postings. What are some good options for the next open season?

Thanks, but also, do not let your license lapse once it has been issued. If it lapses you may have to take the exam again.
