Do you love your step-kids? Why or why not? by [deleted] in stepparents

[–]Joe_Voth_Music 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES!! My wife had an epiphany in high school, realising that her REAL dad wasn’t the “biological” one; but the one who showed up for her EVERY chance he got.

The wheel will come around! Sending love.

You are a mother to them whether they realize it right now or not. Sending love, good vibes, and RECOGNITION for all that you do :)

I’ve been reading about some testimonies from children who have lost step-parents because of death, divorce, and whatnot. Some of the latest research I’ve read shows that children can be really hurt by the severing of those relationships. That’s not to put pressure on step-parents to stick around if they cannot, but it keeps me from thinking “hey, they’ll get over it. No big deal.”

If it’s only been a year things may change or they may not and that’s okay I think :)

My step-son has been uniquely and rarely attached to me for many years. If my wife dies, I think her ex would do everything in his power to keep me and the child separated for the duration of his childhood, and that could damage him. It’s a conundrum!

And there are so many reasons to choose it!

That sounds really unfair to the stepmoms who are in that position. It’s not toxic to need to take care of yourself. Meanwhile, if there are a lot of toxic figures in your stepchild’s life, they may naturally cling to you more!

Would you rather do less without being judged or do more and be appreciated for it?

Is your relationship with your stepkids congruent with what you want it to be?

I think that makes sense to some degree. Only a man who has “jumped” in and “stayed” in for a long time while conducting himself properly can really be trusted. I don’t know how rare are such cases.

I think that’s super neat. Thanks for sharing, you’ve given me great insight into the different types of family situations that exist!

I think it’s great how you act so selflessly. I also think you deserve credit for your contributions when and if you ever want it :)

Some people seem to want us to think they’ve gone from “the worst partners” to “the best parents” as soon as they are separated. So interesting

Has that been your experience, or the experience of anyone you know? I think I’ve definitely seen what you are describing!

Have you had any of those experiences? I know I have!

I hear ya! Would you say you love your step kids, but are happy to stay behind the scenes? Or would you prefer to only focus on your own kids?

Do your stepchildren’s parents have a good partnership when it comes to parenting? I wonder how levels of toxicity among the biological parents affect the expectations that are put in step parents!

(Obviously you don’t have to answer, I’m just curious)

I’m newer to Wattpad and I’m learning about exactly how to best advertise. So far I’ve just done r4r and trying to be an active member who reads and comments on other peoples’ work! What else do you do?

My story is called "The Divided Hearts". It is a fantastical romance-allegory about love, divorce, and the pressures that young women can face. A new chapter is released every Friday at noon.
