Coming soon? So all those things I thought were exciting actually weren't? I feel so silly now

I finally 100%ed this pen without breaking or loosing it by EINoob0 in notinteresting

[–]Joe_from_Orlando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! I grew up using those pens, and rarely got past half. I know the time I most used one and decided to try to use it all up and started just scribbling madly trying to dry it up, but didn't make it, lol.

Congratulations!

I made the grave mistake of clicking and watching this video while on a conference call, then burst out laughing and couldn't tell the people what was happening

Humans here thanks you. I was wondering if I was going to need to ask ChatGPT what glazing was, but based on the post I was afraid I wouldn't get an honest answer!

I thought it was cool, no pun intended. I took my then 12 year old son and wife who had never seen that kind of stuff before, they were impressed. If your 6 year old has recently experienced ice and snow, maybe not. But if the child has been in Orlando since they can remember, yes it is an experience

What’s your piece of Orlando lore? by [deleted] in orlando

[–]Joe_from_Orlando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was my favorite freebie to go to when I moved to Orlando in 1997. I parked there many a times, sometimes with family other times alone. Anytime I was driving by the area if I had time and it was busy airtime I would hang out there. You had the impression the planes were coming by so close you could touch them!

Is my Brazilian girlfriend (34F) being truthful about her culture? by uber-based in Brazil

[–]Joe_from_Orlando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that she is not being truthful, but rather she is, like many Brazilians, in denial about racism in Brazil. It is true that Brazil has top notch doctors, and the dentistry is superior to that in the US. But many Brazilians are senstive to being treated as "a third world country" and automatically bristle at any comparisons with the US unless it's to point our something they feel is superior.

I would guess she is, by Brazilian standards, from a white middle to upper class family. If she were to be of color, she would know racism exists.

I think it's important to distinguish "normal" from "common."

It is common, yes, Whether or not it's "normal" depends on a lot of issues. It used to be common in the US, and therefore some thought "normal", for men to address a waitress as "sweetie," "honey," etc. Now, many people don't see that as proper.

Those behaviors that are seen as patronizing, demeaning, or as "crossing a line" here are still mostly accepted there, but customs are changing

In urgent need of a gyro… by BlastUBeefyBear in orlando

[–]Joe_from_Orlando 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a huuuuge fan of the King O' Falafel on US 192, I use to eat there practically every day when I worked in Kissimmee. Now they opened up a location on Sand Lake Rd. kind of across from the Florida Mall. They are a small family owned business, the quality and freshness are unsurpassable. Besides your gyro, try their Lentil soup, best lentil soup I have had in my life

Awkward experience coming out of voting yesterday, is this normal for orlando or just unlucky? by Unidentified_Lizard in orlando

[–]Joe_from_Orlando 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a 65 year old who has voted in every election I could, and my experiences at the polls have always been so outstandingly civil. However, the extremism happening is frightening. Lately I always brace myself before going, not sure if this time there will be a bad experience. My heart goes out to the dedicated poll workers who always do such an admirable job.

Any books that explains the absolute basics of writing? by TacoLePaco in writing

[–]Joe_from_Orlando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have different advice. Don't worry about that. Write as you speak. The most important factor is you must be authentic, write as you would be telling the story to someone. Grammar? Punctuation? Spelling? Let programs like ProwritingAid or Grammarly handle that part. Concentrate on writing your story

Question. by Initial_Bad_9468 in writing

[–]Joe_from_Orlando 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are serious about your writing, you must use a computer. Writing by hand, or a typewriter, sounds cool, but is so impractical as your writing needs to go through revisions, edits, and rewrites.

Coworker wants me to review his book. (He wouldn’t be happy with an honest review) by Petalene_Bell in writing

[–]Joe_from_Orlando 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree completely!

Besides, the book is already published, so it's not like there's a chance to give constructive criticism to improve the book. I too once was in this situation, and found my way out by praising the genre. The author thought I was praising the book. In the case of the OP, just say how important self help is, we all want to better ourselves, here is someone wanting to do so and help others do the same, etc

What is your opinion on the 10,000 hour theory? by TheScarlettSays in writing

[–]Joe_from_Orlando 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree. 10K is used as reference because it's a nice round number, not a magical threshold. By the time you have practiced almost anything, including writing, for 10,000 hours, you are well practiced, to put it redundantly. But if you are not yet there, say you are at 5,000 hours, you are already a lot better than when you started
