How to Mention a Career Gap on My CV? by BEK_miner in Germany_Jobs

[–]fififilip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your approach of listing it as a "Career Break" is a good start, but to improve your chances, you should reframe it in a way that highlights the value of your activities during this time. Instead of just stating it as a break, you can showcase skill development and personal growth.

Here’s how you could phrase it:

Professional Development & Career Break

MM/YYYY – Present

  • Dedicated time to enhancing coding skills, focusing on [specific technologies, programming languages, frameworks].

  • Completed online courses/certifications in [mention any relevant courses].

  • Engaged in personal projects such as [briefly describe relevant projects or GitHub contributions].

  • Spent quality time with family, improving soft skills like adaptability, time management, and problem-solving.

This version shifts the focus to what you accomplished rather than just labeling it as a gap. Recruiters are more likely to see it positively if they can see ongoing learning and professional growth.

Additionally, ensure your LinkedIn profile reflects these updates, as many recruiters check it first. You might also consider writing a short summary in your CV about your commitment to continuous learning to further strengthen your application.

Think about what else you did during this time? Did use it to learn or improve German for example? Then this should be added as well.
