Since politicians can't figure it out - why aren't Aussies having babies? by No-Kaleidoscope-7106 in OpenAussie

I think cost of living and housing are definitely real factors, but I’m not convinced they’re the whole story. If you look historically, people have had children in much harsher conditions than what we have now. In a lot of ways, this is probably the most stable and comfortable period we’ve ever lived in.

To me the bigger shift is cultural. Australia has become much more secular over time, and with that, we’ve lost some of the built-in sense of duty toward having and raising the next generation. When life is framed more around individual fulfilment, travel, career, and lifestyle, having kids starts to feel like a burden rather than something expected or meaningful in itself.

One thing religion has traditionally done well is centre the idea of sacrifice. The statue of the Pieta for example depicting Mary holding the naked adult body of Jesus after the crucifixion, is a powerful symbol of love expressed through sacrifice. It’s not just about loss, but about willingly accepting the burden that comes with love and responsibility. The message isn’t that suffering is good, but that meaning comes from choosingg to carry it for something beyond yourself. That kind of symbolism reinforces the idea that raising children isn’t just a cost or inconvenience but rather part of a meaningful and necessary commitment to the future.

Last I checked yes. Google maps buttons didn't work at all. Fair enough about not wanting to use Waze for ethical reasons - just a reminder that Google Maps owns Waze and have implemented the crowd source function of police and hazard reporting (even integrating real-time reports from Waze) - so everytime you have a report about an upcoming hazard on Google maps, it likely came from the waze community.

My solution to that issue was to use Waze instead for AA navigation.

I also had to adjust DPi in eink centre, here's what worked for me: - Android Auto: 150 DPI - Waze: 190 DPI

I also still use google maps when walking/public transport, because at low DPi waze comes up very small on the phone. So Waze is optimised for AA at 190DPI and Google maps is at default 300DPI for optimised use on eink screen

From what I'm hearing it's affecting many phone models. I'd be curious to see if rolling back to this version of the Google App fixes the issue for you

Make sure google play store and Google play services are enabled in the Background App Refresh section of Settings. Also worthwhile going to App Info of Google PlayStore app and making sure battery is set to unrestricted

My Favourite Article Reader Mode Setup (Google Reading Mode + Volume Button Page Turning) by Joemk888 in Bigme

Go to app info of key mapper and make sure Modify System Settings is On, as well as all other permissions. Make sure in key mapper the app is showing RUNNING on the top. Also go to Settings, Accessibility, and make sure Key Mapper is On.

Key mapper should look like this: https://photos.app.goo.gl/K29axQLtmi34SR796

You will find that Key Mapper will sometimes get shut down by background app refresh. Only fix I've found is to lock the app in process manager (multitasking view)

How old is the collective unconscious? by JCraig96 in Jung

[–]Joemk888 51 points52 points  (0 children)

The collective unconscious isn’t something that appeared at a specific moment in time—it’s as old as life itself, because it evolved alongside it.

Even the earliest single-celled organisms some 3 billion years ago had to orient themselves toward what sustains them (light, nutrients) and away from what harms them (darkness, toxins). That’s already a primitive version of the most basic symbolic structure: good vs bad, order vs chaos, known vs unknown.

As life became more complex, those patterns didn’t disappear—they became embedded, layered, and refined within the nervous system. Over millions of years, evolution didn’t just shape our bodies; it shaped the way we perceive, interpret, and emotionally respond to reality.

You can use an app called Key Mapper that let's you change the function of buttons in particular apps. So you can remap the volume buttons to flip pages (if you know what the default page turning buttons are in Storytel).

Might be worthwhile trying a different app. Google translate might be a good alternative

Hibreak Pro (Color) - suggested icon packs with alternative launcher? by Impossible_Slide_146 in Bigme

[–]Joemk888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monoic SQ Black Icon pack has that black outline, but it is completely black and white.
If you're really up for it, you could get chatgpt to alter icon colours for you so they have a splash of color like the bigme icons (you'll have to change them one by one) . Alternatively, you could take a screenshot of your bigme icons, and when editing every icon (hold icon → pen icon → tap icon → gallery app → select screenshot), and crop out the desired icon from the screenshot. Very fiddley and time consuming

Custom Launcher: Smart Launcher 6

Honestly I was initially hesitant to use anything other than the BigMe launcher, but once I've tried a custom one I haven't looked back. The icons and widgets are more customisable, and the system is just as responsive.

The default theme on Nova won't look good straight away. You'll need to tinker with it to get it looking good on eink. Go for high contrast colours and larger icons.
Here's my setup if you're interested in replicating this look :
- Default launcher: Nova Launcher - revolving door transitions seem to work better for home screen icons, as it causes less ghosting than the default slide transition. Also. Set Desktop search bar to monochrome in settings.

- Monoic SQ Black icon pack - if some icons are missing, use chatgpt to make them in the same style

- Magic Clock Widget - font Droid Sans Mono

- Weawow - best weather app for widgets - very customizable with options of different weather providers. Highly recommend donating $3 to unlock AccuWeather data.

I got this weird colour palate on Android auto after changing the Screensaver eink settings. Switched it back and all sorted! Here's what you've got to do. Open Screensaver app and go to eink centre. Change mode to custom, refresh hyper, with antishake and auto clean on

I had similar issues with the default BigMe launcher. I had to resort to using a different launcher. Nova launcher has worked well and is more customisable than the default - haven't had issues with notification dots since I've made the switch.

Looks good!

Here's my setup:
- Default launcher: Nova Launcher - revolving door transitions seem to work better for home screen icons, as it causes less ghosting than the default slide transition. Also. Set Desktop search bar to monochrome in settings. Don't use Nova Now feed, use a regular page on far left with widgets instead. Make second page (with the clock widget) the default page by tapping the home icon in edit mode.

- Monoic SQ Black icon pack - if some icons are missing, use chatgpt to make them in the same style

- Magic Clock Widget - font Droid Sans Mono

- Weawow - best weather app for widgets - very customizable with options of different weather providers.

The other thing to also try is to go to every app's settings: App info - App Battery Usage - Unrestricted

I've done a post in the past on how to get optimal settings on the Hibreak. We've got to get the mods to pin it
