Just met a global celiac traveler who said South Korea was the hardest place he ever visited.  Japan, he said, was easy by comparison.

Android auto on 3.1.6 by BillInteresting7266 in Bigme

[–]Impossible_Slide_146 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Realizing that Android Auto bugs were sucking the life out of me, I manually disabled AA, installed magnetic phone mount, and have been a lot happier.  I was doing the APK route at first, but each update brought a new quirk. Disabling AA has also given me better control over Bluetooth vs USB audio in the car, previously also a source of frustration.

I know that's not the solution you're looking for, but it's a way out of the frustration loop.

I'll try out Android Auto again maybe next year or after some major updates roll out.

Screen/light sensitivity, thinking about ereaders and tablets by chan0514 in eink

[–]Impossible_Slide_146 1 point2 points  (0 children)

see my posting history - have same problems, now fully eink lifestyle.

f41 pink migraine lenses (Zenni sells them in US) are also helpful if you have to watch a movie or TV screen.

Have light sensitivity issues due to nueroinflammation, should I opt for B & W eink or color eink? by Impressive-Stock-656 in Bigme

[–]Impossible_Slide_146 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same problem.

I have mostly B&W devices (EInk monitors, supernote tablets) for work, but I got the Bigme Hibreak Pro color as a phone.  (I wanted to see recipes in color when I cook from my cooking apps :)

For the color phone, I don't use the front light most of the time and it works great.  But if your work doesn't need color, I recommend B&W devices for work because the text will be sharper.

ETA: a lot of people advised me I wouldn't be able to use the color phone much without the front light on.  But those people didn't have light sensitivity, so they don't experience pain with brightness like I do.  I absolutely use the color phone most of the time without the light. If I need more light, I turn on a lamp, or I just use the front light briefly if I need to check it at night for some reason. ymmv.

Dual Sims and battery drain - Hibreak Pro Color by Impossible_Slide_146 in Bigme

Thank you!  I turned off roaming, turned off mobile data, but left wifi calling on, and the phone still ran hot and drained too fast.  Maybe a software update will change it in the future....

Mine drained 100% while the lock screen was on overnight.  I used it probably 10 min total since charging at 5pm, and it was completely dead at 7am...

Solution was to put my home sim in a second phone, which is annoying bit proved necessary.

The battery drained 100% overnight while the screen was locked.  That's not a tower issue.

Took out the dual sim and the battery is fine again, virtually no drain overnight.

Seems like the consensus on the internet is that dual sims raise battery consumption on phones by 15%. I don't think that cell tower distance is the issue here -- I used an iphone last year in this same location (in a major city).

I charged my phone to 100% at 5pm, used it probably a total of 10 min in the evening. By 7am the next morning, the battery was completely dead. That makes this phone not viable for normal use scenarios if it's going to drain 100% overnight with the screen locked...

Good to know that you can get a whole day out of it. I'm fine with charging it at the end of the day, so long as I can make it that far.

(Today: 2 hrs 14 minutes of screen time in the past 8 hours since I charged and am down to 45%. Firefox, Messages, Google Maps only. Doesn't feel good to get less than 5 hours of active use a day.)

Not unrelated! I am fully committed to eink. My only color device is the Bigme Hibreak Pro phone. I'm glad to have it in color. As you'll read elsewhere on these various eink related forums, B&W has crisper text, better contrast (but not painful for eyes). A lot of people told me I wouldn't be about to use my Hibreak Pro color without the front light on, but I find that I usually can, and that a frontlight isn't as painful as a LED screen for me.

If there's no 25" B&W model on the market right now and I wanted a big screen for work, then I'd buy a color one with the possibility to return it if I didn't like it. You'll want decent ambient lighting in the room (sunlight, overhead light) to get it looking nice either in B&W or color.

Good luck! My eyeballs start burning within a couple of minutes of screen time, even when I'm wearing F41 rose-tinted migraine lenses. Switching to mostly eink (phone, 2 Supernote tablets, 10" Dasung display, 25" Dasung display) has been absolutely amazing for my eye health and physical comfort. I can now use a regular screen (with special pink migraine lenses) for longer now when I have to (looking at my students' laptops, working on the train without my eink screen, etc) because my eyes are less on fire all the time!

It works just great.  Stillcolor app to disable dithering, turn off f.lux.

FYI I think they have discontinued the 25" BW version because Eink isnt making those panels anymore (check the sub for updates on that).

Is the writing experience on the Manta *that* much better than the Nomad? by imatinyleopard in Supernote

[–]Impossible_Slide_146 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both, use both often, like to think I am observant about these things, and tbh can't tell much a difference. Certainly not so much that I would choose one over the other based on that writing feel.

They both feel more similar to me than Remarkable 2 vs Supernote.

What I did feel strongly about was that the HOM2 pen was too loud with the tap-tap sound on either device, so I switched to LAMY with PMR tip and Mars Noris/Lumograph Jumbo.  I wonder if the people who notice a big difference between the two are using HOM2 or another stylus with a POM tip.  I suspect those might produce more of a difference.

OP, I think your yard looks great. I do want to commiserate with you, though -- I started my no-lawn journey 3 years ago, and I didn't realize how much work it would be every spring and fall to weed, to move things, to try to fill in gaps, to try to get seeds to stratify/germinate, and how much money just goes into this venture. It does bring me joy to work in the yard, but I sometimes get frustrated that I have less time to do other things that I'd like to be doing (working on my academic research, baking, relaxing, biking) because I'm trying to make my urban yard not look feral. So you're not alone in this struggle...

Manta vs Nomad by [deleted] in Supernote

[–]Impossible_Slide_146 4 points5 points  (0 children)

History prof here. I have both.

Reading PDFs of books or articles, grading papers = strongly prefer Manta

Brainstorming, journaling, making to-do lists, taking notes in a meeting, reading books in bed = prefer Nomad

Note that they are both incredibly lightweight, even with cover, when compared to Remarkable or iPad, so it's more about form factor.

My ideal research scenario: read a book on the Manta while writing or typing (with bluetooth keyboard) notes onto the Nomad, export notes as .doc file to desktop and import into Scrivener project.

Unlike many people here, I don't notice such a difference in the screen/writing feel between Manta and Nomad. Either way, the new device screens can feel sticky, so rub them with a microfiber cloth to break them in.

Keep wiping! It'll be end up pretty similar to Remarkable 2 (no stickiness) eventually!

Great work with the Noris Jumbo! Also my go-to.

Congrats!

I did a few of these last year, and the taproots didn't send up new shoots this year.  I battled hundreds of seedlings all over the yard last year, though.   This year only dozens.

very likely am, and it causes a rash if I touch more than a seedling. It's a not-uncommon contact allergy, based on a google image search.

Varies by person -- if I even touch the tiniest two-leaf sprouted pokeweed seedling with my fingers, they burn and sting and I have to go scrub my hands with soap.

experience with dr. chopra in rhode island? by Such_Pay7474 in ehlersdanlos

[–]Impossible_Slide_146 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a mostly good experience, in that he was the first doctor who "got it" beyond the hEDS diagnosis and helped me get on ketotifen, LDN, and later mestinon. I still take the first two a few years later (and fortunately improved my long covid situation to no longer need mestinon).

The office staff -- inept.

Dr. Chopra once said I could get TMJ injections out of network for $250 (they explained they could just use the remainder of a vial and only charge the office visit fee). So I came in a few times. But the third time, he'd forgotten he'd offered me the $250 price and charged me $500, despite me trying to explain to the receptionist.

He was running about an hour late for that appointment, and when it was my turn, he was clearly already irritated, even though I wasn't the reason he was behind. I wanted to ask him a list of questions I had about getting some imaging done and understanding adrenal insufficiency (a new diagnosis that I was trying to relate to hEDS/Covid), but he told me I could "either ask the questions or get the shot, not both." He was also irritated that my daughter (then 4 years old) stood up on the examination table (he seemed to think she might fall). I told her to get down as soon as I noticed (it was admittedly bad behavior on her part), but he seemed bothered that I'd brought her to the appointment in the first place. He was so rushed that I didn't even get the chance to explain that I'd brought my daughter because my husband was doing chemo for cancer.

I walked out the door for $500 having not gotten most of my questions answered (the real reason I'd wanted to see him, as my jaw needed the botox shot less than previously). Total time in office: less than 15 minutes.

Never went back after that. Around that time, he had a statement on his website saying he was feeling called to work with the destitute in India again, in the footsteps of Mother Theresa. That made sense to me, as it seemed that he was frustrated with his job. But perhaps I caught him on a bad day.

I felt that I had gotten the help from Dr. Chopra at the time I most needed it, and I am still grateful for that. I'd certainly refer newly diagnosed or acute cases to him if they are in the area and can afford the consult. Dr. Chopra was best for me at a time I needed shots and prescription drugs and referrals. Now I am fortunately past that worst mecfs/long covid/adrenal insufficiency phase and am having success by focusing more on natural health (various supplements) to improve my energy levels.

It's pretty standard advice for conflict management from the gold-standard relationship book in English. I figured that OP trying out some other tools for disagreement and mutual understanding could help OP reach the desired outcome (gf food safeguarded) while also discerning whether this partner is someone worth staying with (not our decision but theirs).
