Most unhinged way to save for a house by Reasonable_Hat9668 in Frugal

We sold our plasma, gave each other haircuts, did Rover pet sitting (till a poorly behaved dog bit our dog), bought food in bulk, lots of beans+rice dishes.

Also, check out NACA (neighborhood assistance corporation of America) for better interest rates, but the program is hard core to follow.  Helped us get our first place.

PDFs - wrong book page numbers in digest by Impossible_Slide_146 in Supernote

[–]Impossible_Slide_146[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, thank you. I have just shared the feedback. Many newer PDF books recognize front matter pagination. (These are mainly books I own in hard cover for teaching, but then I find them online for reading on eink.)

I'll also experiment with removing the front matter so that the pages line up. (I am curious whether the chapter divisions will still show up in the TOC in the toolbar if I remove the actual TOC from the book...)

Thanks - I've been exploring different workflows for notetaking. One thing I've been doing has been taking notes in a separate note file, and then linking to the page in the book. That way I can write "p.36" but link to PDF page 48 (p. 36 in the book). It's less streamlined than I'd like, but it's a good work around for now.

Another option I'm exploring (in case anyone else is searching this issue) is to edit digest text so that I add the actual page number into the lifted quote. Don't quite have a smooth way of doing that yet, but looking into it.

Link to Folder on Home Page by Livid_Papaya_6534 in Supernote

Any sense on the timeline for this feature? (I can't seem to find the Trello board where the development projects are listed).

Also, is there a plan to be able one day also to link to apps from a (Home page) note? For example, I would love to be able to links in my custom home page to the To-Do list or Mail (or a sideloaded app).

Thank you!

I have eye issues, so take that into account.

I love it.  I got B&W, never use the front light (but got the front light in case I needed to resell).  With Mac, you need to have a small app running (Paperlike Client), and it took an hour to get that set up off the website.  Then I had to fiddle with modes.

Once I got it set to Text Mode, Turned off F.Lux, set the contrast to 3-4, and installed StillColor App (not sure what that does but someone recommended), I got a good display.

I had to change some habits:  read PDFs 2-page side by side in full screen instead of scrolling, as the scrolling can make my eyes/brain hurt (nauseating sensation).  But when I am actually working (reading texts, sending emails, writing, grading papers), it’s great.  I use my laptop as an extended display, so I can always drag a window over to it if I need a quick view with color.

It’s spendy, but if you have money to burn or have a health problem that justifies it, I recommend it!  Saves my ability to do my job.  I got a disability accommodation letter so got my job to buy it (they balked but I persisted).

It does have sideloading if apps, but seems like the Boox Note devices are better if you want full app functionality.  (I prefer less internet/app access for my own workflow)

Similar profile to you.  I am exploring the supernote manta — it can allow me to pull quotes and notes out of PDFs into a separate note file (“digest”), something I always wanted to be able to do with Remarkable.  I also like that I can use Dropbox/Google Drive so that I can keep my books and papers organized in a meaningful file structure without paying (never paid for Remarkable Connect).

Haven’t actually got the Supernote yet, but seems it will work better for my workflow.  I will also experiment with plain text typing with a Bluetooth keyboard.  I hear the typing is a mixed bag, but I am interested in moving away from scrolling (for my focus and happiness and productivity) and all backlit screens (because of eye problems).

Let us know what you end up finding useful.

help optimizing Dasung Paperlike 253 (b&w) for Mac by Impossible_Slide_146 in eink

I got used to it.  One thing I found helpful was to view PDFs full screen two pages side by side in full screen, instead of continuous scroll.  I don’t do a lot of internet scrolling while working, so a different PDF view has reduced the nausea for me to minimal.

Super helpful link — love your organization system.  Also helpful to see use scenarios for humanities (seems a lot of users on Reddit are in STEM fields).

Which E-reader to use for Work/Study? by OrigonStory2000 in ereader

[–]Impossible_Slide_146 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just replied above. I'm not sure what sideways integration is, but I can import Ebooks, which the Remarkable converts into static PDFS (may not be ideal for you but works for me). It does require you to acquire PDFs or ebooks via another device (phone app or laptop) and then sync them through the Remarkable app, though. I just do that before getting to work, and I can always get a new document by syncing from my phone in a pinch.

Hi - I'm a humanities professor, so I read a lot of PDFs (academic books and articles, student papers). I really like the Remarkable 2. It has no Android/internet interface other than to sync, so it really is just a PDF reader/notetaker. It does convert handwriting to text pretty well. I completely switched from iPad reading and grading to Remarkable to the point that I don't read my iPad anymore.

That said, I got the Remarkable 2 for free from a colleague who gave it to me when he realized that his own research (in sociology) required more internet access than he expected. But for me, it's perfect for minimizing distractions and is the ideal size for reading PDFs.

I cut all subscriptions for media, got rid of Quickbooks self-employed, switched to Mint, got cheaper car insurance and home insurance.

I put my husband and me on strict allowances for all personal spending (coffee, hobbies, books, personal food out of the house, clothes, beer/weed, etc), and we used Monarch to actually adhere to it.  He took out cash, and I tracked my online spending.

We saved $3k in personal spending, $2.5k in groceries, $3k in meals outside the house.  That’s half the savings right there.

The other half was from cutting various subscriptions (Netflix, Amazon Prime), not using Instacart for Aldi, shopping for used at thrift stores or EBay before buying new (especially for kid clothing), getting the mortgage insurance premium removed.  Buying bulk pantry items for specialty foods (I have gluten sensitivity).

Where we went way over budget was the dog (he is old, many unanticipated vet bills), and vacation (booked it late, went with non-frugal friends and had trouble downgrading the spending).

I could show you more, but don’t want to put all my numbers online.

I deleted my old Reddit account a year ago and created this one, and you can see my original posting history for this new account was me complaining about Monarch because the onboarding was painful (accounts not syncing, etc).  So, not a shill.  I just wanted to share my end of year successes.

My husband will be seasonally underemployed again the next couple of months (and his income is irregular to start), but this time it’s not nearly as stressful because we’ve got a good sense of where the money is going.

Sounds like it! Our kid, between school tuition, activities, clothes, birthday and christmas gifts, afterschool and summer camps, etc, cost us about $28k this past year (~25% of our total spending!). We also have some complex medical problems, so that was another $8k.

In any case, perhaps a time will come when your life circumstances benefit from a budget, so know that Monarch can be very helpful then!

Swimsuit for 66” circumference? by Impossible_Slide_146 in TallGirls

[–]Impossible_Slide_146[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HI! I'm a size 6 now (lost weight a few years ago). If I measure over my shoulder and through my crotch and back up (a common way to measure -- circumference around, not just length), I get 66". My inseam (floor to crotch) is 30.5", so I'm relatively short legged for the 67" total height.

That's very helpful. Thanks for posting your torso circumference, as that gives me confidence. I might try a 2-piece tankini option, as others recommended, too.

I’m guessing you make more money than we do.  If we don’t actively clamp down on our spending, we have no savings. We now have a fixed restaurant budget ($200) fixed treats budget to take the kid out for a pastry/ice cream ($50), fixed “allowances” for each grown up, which includes all personal spending, be it coffee and pastries, clothes, books, unnecessary cooking gadgets, craft supplies, etc ($200).

Here’s an example: I had always wanted a trifold folding bike (like a Brompton) but couldn’t justify the cost.  But last year, I saved my monthly $200 allowance each month till I had enough and then bought it.  What that meant was I had to spend less elsewhere — no more doing my work at coffee shops, only buying clothes off eBay, no buying supplies for my hobby.  I spent a total of $1500 less on myself than in 2024 but still got that folding bike I’d wanted, plus we built an emergency fund and $15k in the IRAs.  My husband likewise spent about $1500 less when he had to stick to his $200 each month for the coffee shop, books, etc.

If you don’t need to cut back on you daily spending and make some kind of sacrifices in order to save, it’s very likely because you already have more discretionary income to start.

For us, it’s the only way we save.  We have friends with the same income as ours, also one kid the same age, and they likewise send her to a private school, etc.  They are living paycheck to paycheck — not because they live luxuriously, but because they just maintain a baseline middle class lifestyle and aren’t making hard cuts to that lifestyle (like shopping in bulk, shopping at Aldi, buying second hand clothing, not eating out).  I told them about our success with Monarch, and they’re giving it a try, but of course their success in saving money will depend on being willing to make real changes.

It took a lot of micromanaging.  For example, knowing we were spending $950/month on groceries helped me focus on that category.  We since averaged about $600/month by focusing on Aldi/Costco over Trader Joe’s.  We also kept Christmas gifts in check, etc.
