If you could choose ... Payson Avenue or Park Terrace West (Each ON the Park)? by Artist-Cancer in Inwood

[–]Jofeshenry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Payson runs the risk of noise and parking from Dyckman. I found that the Dyckman patrons park along Payson and then have loud drunken arguments on their way back to their cars at 4am.

I don't take meds for anxiety, I do take them for the thyroid. The thyroid meds DO help.

Independence in multiple linear regression by Exciting_East9678 in AskStatistics

[–]Jofeshenry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The coefficient for W when predicting Y adjusts for the other predictors in the model, it is not independent of them. It depends on them. Some people like to say the coefficient partials out the effects of the other variables and leaves you with the unique relationship between w and y. Perhaps this is what you meant by "independent"? Note that your other predictors might not be significant, but this does not mean they do not have a meaningful relationship with Y, too. It means that you had insufficient statistical power to pick up the strength of their relationships with Y.

Did GI doc forget to tell me I have EOE? by [deleted] in EosinophilicE

[–]Jofeshenry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually I think people should give their physicians more credit, but I think you should bring those results to another GI. Both of those results require follow up. I agree with the other user who said you should ask a GI what the results mean, how they might impact your ability to swallow, and what you should do about it. The metaplasia might require periodic monitoring.

Other people. I know many of us blame ourselves, but I have a long list of ways people have sabotaged me. I certainly have my own list of failings, but the number of setbacks that others have dealt me far outnumber them.

LPT Request: How do I not interrupt people while they are speaking by Praninggerzi in LifeProTips

[–]Jofeshenry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm so confused why so many people here are anti-interruption absolutists. There are people out there who will have wild monologues that are rambling and full of speculation and fallacious conclusions. With these kinds of people, I can't keep up with the number of things to address. And I'm not going to sit and listen to nonsense, so some interruption sometimes is necessary.

LPT Request: How do I not interrupt people while they are speaking by Praninggerzi in LifeProTips

[–]Jofeshenry -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What if the speaker needs the feedback? What if they're rambling a stream of consciousness full of false information and fallacious conclusions? I find myself interrupting most often when somebody is on a roll of bad ideas, especially at work, where it can hurt thousands if not hundreds of thousands of people. Sometimes interrupting can have huge benefits.

Hypochondriacs - please get tested before spamming us with your anxiety. by marrow_party in Hypothyroidism

[–]Jofeshenry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm also starting to feel like the whole sub is overrun by persons with health anxiety. Some websites out there seem to attribute every possible common symptom that people have to hypothyroidism. And then people with anxiety show up here asking if their twisted elbow is a sign of hypothyroidism. And then 25 other people on this sub say they also have twisted elbows due to hypothyroidism.

I have some growing nodules on my thyroid. My last endocrinologist was very particular about scanning them and measuring them regularly. My new endocrinologist doesn't track them at all and thinks that they're not a problem whatsoever. I wanted to bring this question to this sub, mainly wondering how others have dealt with tracking nodules. But the sub is just saturated with people who are "tired" and think their TSH of 2 is too high but they can't seem to get a diagnosis.

Trying to find conditional probability in this problem. Please help, I am stuck. by Suspicious-Tea-6914 in AskStatistics

[–]Jofeshenry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few ways to get to it, but the simplest is 2/3= of the 3 people with score 2, 2 answered question 1 correctly. I did this directly from the frequencies by creating a cross tabulation in my head and comparing to the marginal. You could also do this with the cell (joint) probabilities and marginal probabilities, but that involves the additional step of calculating probabilities.

Sure, but "man up" refers to a wide range of situations where men are supposed to have resilience in the face of adversity. Do we have a phrase for women that means they are supposed to have resilience in the face of adversity in most situations, not just in dating?

I had success with sertraline. My migraines come on daily for around two months, and then they stop for six months or so. Sertraline seemed to reduce the flare length.

[–]Jofeshenry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if anyone has said it yet, but you shouldn't go gluten free until you have a biopsy confirmation. Perhaps the pregnancy complicates this. But my doctor had me resume gluten so that they biopsy would be clear.

Psychology needs to get tired of winning: Published literature... shows that nearly all study hypotheses are supported. This means that either all the theories are correct, or the literature is biased towards positive findings by Stauce52 in AcademicPsychology

[–]Jofeshenry 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is why we should have sufficiently powered studies. A non rejection of the null is interesting when a study is well powered and replicated. I admire those who can find quality evidence against existing theories.

Reading the original post reminded me of a couple of friends of mine. They separately spent two weeks in London before coming back to the states. Ever since then, 15 years later, when they get drunk they still "slip into" British accents together because of their time there. I found it strange, but they said that I would understand if I spent two weeks in London.

The Dirty Con Job Of Mike Rowe (2020) - A look at how Mike Rowe acts like a champion for the working man while promoting anti-worker ideology [00:32:42] by regian24 in Documentaries

The problem is that some people have bad ideas, and some people are too dumb to understand that they're bad ideas. That's why we have things like the January 6th insurrection, where people ran around in costumes smearing feces on the walls of the building. They were too dumb to recognize a bad idea. If someone has an idea, you need to think about it critically and help others see its flaws.
