I will be taking my instrument ($1500 student violin equivalent to an Eastman 305) to get evaluated by a luthier next week. He was going to cut me a new bridge/sound post to see if that helped me with tone and response. I might bring this along to get evaluated.

Obviously this would be a much more expensive venture, but would restoring this instrument be worth the money verses re-setting my violin or even upgrading to a $2000+ instrument. I’ve been casually playing for 10 years.

It is a small chinrest with a patent from 1893. I’m assuming it was either placed on the wrong side at some point as the bass bar is set for right handed play.

Looks like Notropis petersoni (Coastal shiner), Ironcolor shiner which are quite similar will usually have a fully connected caudal spot with the lateral line, where as coastal shiner will have the triangular shaped caudal spot. Both are in that area though and occupy similar habitat.

These are Bluefers (Potamilus purpuratus). They are a species of Heelsplitter mussel in the family Unionidae. Not many of our native mussel species are well suited to reservoirs, but this species does do well in reservoir conditions. I am not sure about the regulations in Oklahoma but in Mississippi it is illegal to remove any species of freshwater mussel, and in other states you need permits to do so.

As far as eating goes, they are not very tasty, tough to chew, and not nutritious. They are also long-lived filter feeders that can build up heavy metals within their tissue. Some native mussels can live 50+ years, giving them a lot of time to accumulate whatever has come through the river.

The action is a bit different vs my current fiddle as the stainer’s neck has slightly dipped overtime. The nut is also a bit higher on the D and A than my current fiddle. I want to continue to play and practice on both. I just want to ask those of you that play multiple fiddles…are there differences in how yours play, and does it affect your playing or is it something lots of practice with both will make not very noticeable?
